Yes, we all know the universal speed limit is ~187,000 mps, but that is moving through normal space. Objective time varies inversely with velocity, and at the speed of light drops to plank time, in essence stopping, or nearly so. At extremely large fractions of c, a journey of hundreds to thousands of light years would take days to weeks of local time, and you only need a form of inertial dampening to allow for high levels of acceleration. There are other means for acheiving velocities higher than c when viewed from an outside perspective, most methods involving travel in a "dimension" other than the 4 most commonly accepted ones, such as "hyperspace".

It went from 400K to 700K in a matter of seconds.

700K isn't really that warm for a jet engine (~425 C), what's impressive is that it had been running so cool - 400K is only ~25 degrees above boiling! It is impressive that the Belgians incorporate that kind of data into their radar systems, though.

They probably just kicked on the afterburner.

I'm pretty sure they were referring to velocity, not temperature, since it was in reference to the "illuminated target speed indicator" and 300Km/s over 10 seconds is over 3,000 g.

In the case of a one-time purchase of a product license (e.g., purchase of a single game) from Valve, Valve may choose to terminate or cancel your Subscription in its entirety or may terminate or cancel only a portion of the Subscription (e.g., access to the software via Steam) and Valve may, but is not obligated to, provide access (for a limited period of time) to the download of a stand-alone version of the software and content associated with such one-time purchase.

This is required in the unlikely event that Steam is shut down without being able to provide the user with a stand-alone downloadable copy of the game, such as in the event that the servers are deemed evidence in a legal case and must be taken off-line without notice, or they lose their servers/connection for any other reason(natural disaster/fire/disgruntled employees/use you imagination). It only serves to protect from them lawsuits in the event something similar to what I described above happens. There is also the possibility that they lose the contract to provide games from a certin publisher, and then must remove them from the Steam server, in this case, it is unlikely the publisher would allow them to provide a downloadable, stand-alone version to customers, and again, this protects them from lawsuits due to events beyond their control.

Unfortunately, in a world where "The people's right to know" means we should broadcast our military strategies to the public at large over channels visible by the entire world before said strategies are put into use, the need for disinformation campaigns to protect our real strategies become more neccessary. This, of course, leads to more scandals because the government is forced to lie to its people in order to not give away valuable strategic information. This is also why the military has to buy those $12,000 hammers and $23,000 toilet seats.

Did I miss our conquest of Europe or the Middle East? I thought we go in, blow up some bad guys, and then help the existing peoples rebuild. Expansionism requires some actual expansion of borders, and yes, we do have a number of US territories scattered about, on islands, that serve a strategic military purpose, but it's not like we have gone out and attempted to conquer the countries we have fought in. Hell, we haven't even attempted to take over Canada or Mexico, and you know those two would be as difficult to overthrow as it is to get cheap prescriptions from them. Please enlighten me with examples of countries in which we have come as conquerors instead of liberators or protectors. If the US was really an expansionist nation, we would be in control of a majority of Europe and key points of revenue in the Middle East and Africa, and would have probably bombed Russia back into the stone age for good measure. The best way to build a space elevator would be to begin at GSO and build outwards from there, keeping equal mass towards and away from Earth. You can then maintain a stable CoG by having masses at the top and bottom of the elevator structure that can be added or removed as needed. Note that in this design, the elevator is NOT tethered to the ground and is in fact in orbit with a portion coming near the ground. Some form of thrust, likely ionized gas propulsion, would be needed at the top to counteract drag and other wind acting on the lower section of the elevator.

It is not quite so vicious as others have stated, if you stay in empire space, but the real PvP occurs out in 0.0. To get the hang of the game, you can easily go it solo in empire space running missions for various factions, which can earn you a decent amount of ISK, as well as faction standings that give you discounts on manufacturing/research facilities, and loyalty points which can be spent in special faction stores to get faction specific and higher end items at a reduced monetary cost. My first year was spent mostly running solo missions, building up standings, money, and skills, while extending diplomatic ties to various groups, and gaining insight from some friendly, and some unfriendly, veterans. But like most things of value, you get out of it what you put in. If you only give it a couple of weeks where you spend most of your time complaining about how steep the learning curve is (which is one of the major reasons the average player age is over 20 years old, and not 12-13 like some others)you will not have an enjoyable experience, but if you approach the game with the preconception that there is great diversity in what you can do, and seek out those who can give you advice, you will likely find you enjoy the game, and possibly find yourself a group of like minded individuals to group up with. Many corps even have starting builds they reccomend to new players that want to begin in a particular role, and since you aren't locked into any particular class, you can expand into other areas as you learn and grow. One thing I have heard from dissatisfied players is that they want to know how to "beat" the game, or get to the end game content like there is in other, hack and slash style, MMOs. There is no "end game" to EVE, as it is a dynamic virtual world, with shifting political landscapes, and new expansions adding features, skills, ships, and more on a fairly regular basis, and best of all, they have never charged for an expansion. You pay $20 for the client initially, and can download it from the site at any time, and the base clent download gets updated with the latest patches, so you don't have to spend hours downloading, installing, and then downloading years of patches. I would recommend you give the trial a go, and if you have a Steam account, you can get a 21 day trial. Just be sure to seek out those with more experience, try the recruitment channels, and expect to lose some ships. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and you just might find yourself a new addiction.
