The reason for YOU, perhaps. Probably me too. But while I have no hard numbers to back me up, I bet a majority of people with DVD players do not have 5.1-capable stereo systems Or progressive-scan TVs. Their major reason for buying DVDs are probably random access (like CDs), plus all of the extras that come with DVD movies.

If they were to dare to pull that, hopefully there will be an uproar. But you know what? I bet it won't make much of a difference. Better sound quality was probably the LAST reason people switched to DVDs. Random access was probably the first readon, followed by much less degradation over time.

Look at MP3s. Many people still use 128kbps, and that's less quality than CD. The portability, ability to store more than CDs can, and the availablility of free songs is what made MP3s succeed.

Damn you slashdot! Whenever I actually have mod points, I never seem to come across a post I'd want to mod up. Of course, when I do, the points are gone. Grumble.

Anyway, I agree with 100% of what you said, and I've been saying the same thing for years now. DVD and CD succeeded because they had more than one thing going for them, and its competition paled in comparison. Any futute format that expects to replace them are going to have to pony up more than just one new 'cool' feature in order to find a viable marketplace.

It was easy to make cassettes and VHS tapes look bad. It will be much harder to do the same with CDs and DVDs.

I foolishly signed a 2-year contract with AT&T in 7/02 since it included a free Motorola v60 phone which I read can act as a modem. Unfortunately I did not do enough research and did not discover until I signed up that AT&T disabled data access on their model. My own fault I guess.
But now I have a 12 inch Powerbook that I'd really like to take on the road, and a bluetooth phone with data capabilities is a must. Until my contract expires in July I am stuck. I'm looking at T-Mobile with their unlimited data plan.

Fine, but what if I want to use the GUI via my Linux box at home? Sure I can ssh in, but the Server I have is a Jaguar server, so not everything is doable by the command line. That's why I want to use VNC. but without the GUI layer loading, VNC has nothing it can attach itself to.

  17. True Headless server? on Review - Mac OS X Server 10.3, Part 2 · · Score: 1

I can't believe that OSX refuses to start it's GUI if there is no monitor attached on bootup. That means you can't start a VNC server to remotely use the GUI tools. There's a dongle you must buy in order to fool the server into thinking that a monitor is attached. I can see if it's done to protect the end user, but there should be a selectable option to turn this off, especially on the server version. Apple does not sound like much of a server company if they can't think about these things.

I don't see life in prison as revenge. Though I do see a bit of "eye for an eye" in it, though not exactly literally. To me, life is pretty sacred (though while I am not a fan of abortion I am pro-choice, go figure), since I do not believe in heaven. I feel that our time on this earth is very limited in the big picture and that there is no coming back. So for me cutting that time shorter for an innocent life is the worst crime you could possibly commit. So I'm beyond wanting rehabilitation for someone who takes an innocent person's life. I don't care if the person now regrets what he/she did or not, that does not bring the victim back to life. I guess I'm a bit of an objectivist in that way ("A is A, murder is murder").

But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. In any case, I appreciate your keeping this intelligent and completely flame-free.
