Truth in history (or at least, mythical history). Supposedly nobody made more money during the gold rush years than the shovel makers.
Looking over the settlement of California, the gold rush populated the state - failed or retired prospectors built ranches, planted orchards, built toll roads, drove stage coaches, built fishing fleets, etc. Without the Gold Rush California may not have developed anywhere near as much as it has.
So if I understand you correctly, The CA Gold Rush is responsible for "Avatar"
Silly man. The AR 50 is a single shot rifle. After you kill a zombie, you'll have to re-load. What you need is what's known as a "Ma Deuce" or the Browning M2 50 caliber machine gun. Kind of hard to carry around however.
Personally, I'd prefer a Mossberg short barrel shotgun with a magazine extension. Just saying.
When this kind of technology becomes affordable, and it will, you might need someone (ie, a nurse) to describe the visible symptoms and translate the patient's complaints to the Digital Doctor (tm). If need be, the DD will review digitized x-rays, cat scans or mri's and then come up with a diagnosis and treatment that is probably at least as good as a doctor and will be less expensive.
Agreed
At university, I was told medicine was an art and profession. BS. It has been my experience, as a Pharmacist, that I've been a better diagnostician than many a doctor. People often see the Pharmacist first before the doctor, and I've been able to refer them to a "higher authority" when I was unable to provide them with relief.
Attended university where I studied for a professional degree. Everything else that I know is self taught. My personal opinion is that a university degree in an un-classified subject (eg Liberal Arts) is a complete waste of everyone's time. My $0.02
War on Drugs is a total failure anyway. Anybody who wants drugs can get them. It has done nothing to stop them.
The war has been lost for a long time, but because of the Puritanical outlook of the USA, they won't concede it was a failure. How can the US lose a war? The temperament of the population won't allow it.
I think SOME progress is being made with states like CA and OR allowing the legal sale of pot, but we have such a long way to go.
Meanwhile, In NY City, go to any park by a university campus and if you have the money, they have the stuff, any stuff.

I just find it incredible that the company that invented portable music with the "Walkman" seems to have their status lowered with each and every thing they try. It's funny but I think one of the reasons for the success of the Walkman was that you could transfer your records to tape (and not have to buy them again) and in the case with Dolby NR and metal tape the tapes many times sounded better than the records. I can remember back in the 80s if you wanted the best in electronics you bought Sony because they delivered quality and value. Then time after time they DRM'd themselves to death. Remember DAT? Who the hell uses that stuff unless they're professionals trying to get the cleanest reproduction at an impromptu recording session, and even that is superceeded by purely digital recording to TF card with no moving parts to screw up. They didn't accept MP3 format when it was clear the iPod was going to clean their clock.
With their gaming consoles, both portable and for the home, all anyone ever wanted to do was to take something they bought with their hard earned cash and maybe modify it so it did what they wanted. Now they're getting screwed. Quelle suprise!
More to the point, this is a private person doing something privately with their earned fortune, its none of the WSJs business.
More to the point, we may have the right to know, but why should we or the WSJ care?
Seems to me this an AWFUL LOT like the RIAA telling me I can't rip a CD, download a MP3, DVD or the like. They bought the damn plane, paid for the damn gas WHY SHOULDN'T THEY BE ABLE TO USE IT ! The WSJ, a very far right leaning news agency is just trying to embarass Google's founders (who I think have views slightly further to the left than the WSJ . Hell, even Christ said: "The poor will always be with us" or maybe that was just words some second century writer put in his mouth.
You are an adult and you didn't know what a Geiger counter was? Jeebus, what is this world coming to? Don't they teach you ANYTHING at University? Middle School? Public School? You haven't read a book or newspaper? Your Mum keep you in a cupboard and feed you scraps?
In any event, there are 2 types of radiation you have to be aware of when testing foodstuffs for consumption. Gamma and Beta. Gamma is the worst with beta coming up as dangerous depending. Depending on what, you say? Good question. Depending on concentration, silly.
Most beta emitters can be detected with a survey instrument (such as a CD V-700 , provided the metal probe cover is open). Some beta emitters, however, produce very low energy, poorly penetrating radiation that may be difficult or impossible to detect. Examples of these are carbon-14, tritium, and sulfur-35.
.
Gamma radiation is much more dangerous because it has a much higher energy than the other two natural forms of radioactivity (the others being of course alpha and beta (mentioned above) Gamma radiation is the product of radioactive atoms. Gamma ray emission frequently follows beta decay, alpha decay, and other nuclear decay processes.
As far as testing the Geiger counter, all you need is a week emitter of radioactivity. This could be:
A radioactive watch dial (tritium)
Some limestone
A smoke detector that uses ionization to detect smoke (duh) (contains a wee bit of a radioactive element).
I'm sure if these week emitters can set the counter off and give a readable value, you're pretty much in the clear.
Remember, I'm not A NUCLEAR PHYSICIST , but I play on on TV.
