So let's go from the other direction... WHICH APPLICATION wouldn't mind if it randomly did random things. You know, a simple IF-THEN will evaluate wrong, or a simple GOTO will go to somewhere else (or not go to at all) or a WHILE...DO will quit before being done...
I have no idea which application (either software or real life institution) would go for this.
There are different kinds of instructions. Even today, floating point operations are done in a different area than jumping instructions like IFs and GOTOs.
You can imagine a faster or cheaper chip that requires less energy that does floating point operations with 99% accuracy - or maybe even with an accuracy of your choice. So in your example, the code part that decides what frame to encode runs on the 100% accurate chip, the code part that creates the waveform or whatever runs on the chip with 99% accuracy. My ear probably couldn't tell a perfect waveform form a slightly different one.
Or think about the brightness or color in a video clip - if the errors are small enough, it will just look like film grain.
In video games, approximations are already being used, because you probably don't care if your rocket is flying with 10 units per second or 9.996 units per second.
I totally agree. This is just like those newfangled "wheel" things that everybody talks about today, and how efficient they are for transportation and whatnot. That's why I prefer traveling barefoot.
In this context: being as smart as you are, for example.
What makes you think they will achieve it?
Our brain is a complex machine. We can analyze how it works and build something similar.
And what do you think will happen when they do?
Nobody is really sure about that. I think they will improve their own design and build something that is even more powerful, and continue that recursive process. It's really hard to make predictions beyond that.
Such a machine would have no use for you. ..
Maybe I could use it write comments on Slashdot...
Your pocket calculator is millions of times faster than you, and Google (a computer system) is millions of times faster at finding information than you are.
Computers can't think yet, but they will eventually. You can watch the progress.
Oh wait, it requires expertise in (per wikipedia) fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, orbital mechanics, flight dynamics, physics, mathematics, control engineering, materials science, aeroelasticity, avionics, reliability engineering, noise control, and flight testing among other domains. Yeah, real easy.

Remember OSX, based UNIX, said that they had no virii. Ooops, not that OSX is becoming popular it seems that there are a few security loopholes. The same thing would happen to Linux since hackers are a determined lot.
Linux needs to stop the smug attitude because users don't care about smugness. They just want things to work!
Please, don't use the word "virii" anymore.
And, as you said, Apache is very popular as a web server, and still isn't as vulnerable as Microsofts IIS.
So no, vulnerability does not always rise with popularity.
Sorry, but I still don't believe you can equate pet life with human life.
If you went to a funeral of a 10-year old child, would you tell the parents "I know exactly how you feel, my poodle just died" ?

Seriously, please tell me. I just had to install McAffee at work and the machine was rendered nearly unusable. I'm not up to date in the windows world, so I don't know the alternatives.
I dunno about cat people, but, as a 'dog person'...I can tell you that my animals really have become a part of the family. They aren't treated like 'dogs' or animals, they are really more just little fuzzy people that don't talk much in our homes.
How much would you pay for, lets say, a kidney transplant for your dog? How much would you pay for a neurosurgeon or a radiation therapy in case of cancer?
Not trolling, just curious.

You forgot "anti virus software". By fare the biggest (and probably least useful) resource hog.
So I ask you, why do you care? You aren't forced to see the movie and if you do, it's going to give you something you love and cherish the most: something to bitch vindictively about.
You say this now.
May I introduce you to director Jospeh Kahn, and his impressive achievements, including a number of Britney Spears video clips and the movie "Torque".
Their product is free, and does not prevent competitors from entering the market. Someone in Mozilla's PR department needs to shut these clowns up.

Ubuntu is a necessary evil. For some reason, we need a distro for the Windows masses.
I'm using Arch Linux too, and I found Ubuntu more complicated than Arch.
What do you think that word means?

You are sitting in front of one of those.

Yeah, let's see how they figure that out!!1
Oh, wait...
Then why is it being subsidized?
And yet everyone who lives there has adequate healthcare and the same standard of living without massive national debt.
Really? I wonder who payed the BRDs 1.527.863.662.684 Euros in debt.

I think there isn't much they can do about it when people upload encrypted .rar files.
I have heard Google frowns upon this and that accounts that use this are being removed.
If the government really hated the BBC for one reason or another, they could remove the mandatory TV license fee.
Here in Germany, I never experienced any hostility towards open source software in the educational system.
The universities are quite supportive of open source and lend their infrastructure to host mirrors for various distributions.
