  1. Swearing?!? Won't someone think of the children! on A Report on Swearing in Online Games · · Score: 3, Interesting

I recently slapped together a pointless waste of time and noted with an unfortunate lack of surprise just how many of the postings were profane or sexual or otherwise trollish. I think the average age of web posters must be about 14 or so and the average mind must be in the gutter. This does not speak well for our future... of course sometimes it can sure as hell be damn entertaining! Ah, nevermind. Screw the future!

  2. So then.. on Domestic Spying Records Ordered Released · · Score: 5, Insightful

On March 8th, which page of the newspaper will this story be buried on and who will Dick Cheney have to shoot to get that to happen?

(sarcasm doesn't always transmit well via text...)

  3. Bah. on Search Engine For Coders to Launch · · Score: 2, Funny

What I really want is a code engine that let's me type: "the misguided and hopeless project I'm working on" in the search box and then delivers the finished executable and documentation so I can email it to my boss and go home early.

  4. Wiki on VisiCalc Creator Developing WikiCalc · · Score: 3, Funny

  6. Exploitation is fun! on Prostitutes Call for a Ban on GTA · · Score: 1

So are they going to sue the movie industry next for all the films that portray violent crime towards prostitutes? What about churches that use prostitution as a classic example of evil and immoral behavior? Stupid.

  7. The experience on Review: Animal Crossing and Electroplankton · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think certain game makers are starting to really exploit the idea that a game is about the whole unified experience and not about what you do or how you do it or even what the little pieces look like. It's about a kind of interactive virtual total-immersion. Trying to explain why a game is fun in terms of how you play and what the avatars look like is a bit like claiming poker is a great game because the rules for getting a full house are so simple and the little hearts on the cards are cute.

  8. Overlord on Scientist to Implant Electrode in His Own Brain? · · Score: 1, Funny

  10. Mmmm.. Yummy statistics... on Google Acquires Measure Map · · Score: 1

Personally I think Google just has some kind of addiction to anything that involves lots of data and/or statistics. Perhaps they don't really have a master plan - they just like big huge clusters and keeping as many bits as possible in the wires.

    Too true!!

  12. Why do this? on Oracle Acquires Sleepycat · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why buy up all these other database alternatives? The only good reason I can think of is that they are trying to cover all ranges of database needs. I guess that makes sense, but are they going to combine all of these products into one interoperable system and thus destroy the original advantages the previous products had?

  13. Now bring back Duck Hunt! on LCD TopGun Hands On Review · · Score: 4, Funny

Yes! Those old shooting games were the *best*! We need some new modern ones spiffed up with high-rez 3D laughing dogs and surround-sound quacks! I can't wait...

  14. Re:Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on 10 Best S/F Films That Never Existed · · Score: 1

In the movie they gave him a second head, but it is tucked under his primary head. His primary head sort of flips backward to reveal the second one - but only when it wants out to talk. They get rid of the second head early in the film via a plot device so it really isn't a problem most of the time. *sniff*

  15. Military better watch out.. on Real Warriors Trained In Virtual Worlds · · Score: 3, Funny

..or else Jack Thompson is going to sue their violent-game-promoting asses!

  16. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on 10 Best S/F Films That Never Existed · · Score: 1

I don't think Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy could ever have worked as a movie no matter who made it. It relied far too much on imagination and the images were so wacky that the act of trying to translate them into *actual* images on a screen could only ever diminish them.

  18. No one can own open source. on Google And Open Source · · Score: 4, Interesting

Any person or company who contributes *anything* to the OSS community is helping it thrive. Google contributes in a variety of ways from actually releasing source code, funding summer of code, and even just existing as an excellent search engine making it easier for OSS developers to search for previous solutions to the problems they are facing.

  19. Embrace and extend? on Gentoo Founder Quits Microsoft · · Score: 1

  21. Spectator gaming... on Competitive Gaming Hits the Mainstream · · Score: 2, Interesting

It just seems stupid to me. Gaming is very much about the gamer and his/her experience. Making it be about the audience seems like it'd turn gaming into nothing more than a puppet show. Machinima already does that.

  22. Stupid adware. on Feds Asked to Take Action Against Adware Creator · · Score: 2, Insightful

That stuff is evil. I think we should just submit them to a public stoning or something like that. Not only would it be more fun - they might actually consider not doing it again!

  24. Not a big chess player, but... on Chess for Kids? · · Score: 1

I think the best way to learn at first is by hands-on practice. Trial and error. You could try to teach the theory of the mechanics up front, but I think you might be doing her a disservice by eliminating the learning process. There's much about games that feed intuition and if you remove the need to develop the intuition it seems to me that you'd be removing part of what makes the game fun to begin with. But, then again, I have no children and I'm certainly not an expert.. :-) I'd say just play the game with her and let the learning take care of itself. If she's beating you all the time, though, then that's different - but if this is just about learning the game and having fun with it then who cares if everyone is using the best possible strategy for each move?
