  1. Re:Dropbox on How Do You Sync & Manage Your Home Directories? · · Score: 1

Yes I have found this setup works very well. Here are some details about how I do it on the cheap (I'm a grad student).

    Here is my setup:

I have www.teksavvy.com as my ISP, they offer really good service to Toronto. They offer 200GB/month with fast response times for games, or unlimited/month with slower response time. This costs about $40/month CAN.

Now to get around the dynamic IP I have a free account with www.dyndns.com, they give out .homelinux.org which I think is kinda nice. To update my changing IP I setup ddclient (supported by dyndns) as a service that starts at boot. It checks to see if the IP has changed every 3mins or whatever you set it to.

Then install and setup sshd for ssh connections. This will also enable sftp. If you want you can use RSA keys from work/school/iphone.

Then open up the ssh port on your firewall and router, and away you go.

There are tons of programs that support sftp (eg. filezilla). Most of the time my connections are done from my lab at school, so having stuff encrypted is a must.

For more fun check out SSHFS (http://fuse.sourceforge.net/sshfs.html). This will let you mount ssh shares like a local device.

The only draw back is the upload speed from home is slow, but you get what you pay for. If you need more bandwidth, get synchronous like the parent.

I wonder how this will work out for established artists? I could see a lot of big name artists wanting to get out of their contracts and run on this service. They are already know, so the exposure and some sales are in the bag. But this way the music is cheaper, they get a bigger cut, and keep the rights. I am sure that established artists can pay for their own recording studio and techs, so I don't see the quality of this going down either.

Am I missing anything here, or is this going to be the future of the music industry?

    Cue baseless RIAA lawsuits.

I get the same kind of feed back when it comes to software. I would tell my family to use Firefox to stop pop-up windows (this is a few years ago). I install it and show them how to use it. A month goes by and they say they getting pop-ups. I ask them to show me and guess what? They are using IE, because they don't like Firefox. Can't I just make IE not have pop-ups? Absolutely. Tie fighter IMHO was by far the best.

I loved it because it had the opposite difficulty style of most games. In most games you are a really tough ship/guy, who needs to fight off hordes of weaker guys/ships. But in Tie Fighter you WERE the dinky POS, two shots and you were fried. For me it made the experience more intense. You couldn't just fly into a group of bad guys and start blasting. You had to have really good situational awareness, because surprises would kill you without a second chance.

Later in the game you would get the Tie Advanced and Tie Defender, which had shields and missiles. But because I spent the first half the game being terrified of being shot, that style of flying stuck with me. Leave the shields weak and put the power to the engines. It ended up making the game a little faster rather then more tank like. The Missile boat was great for the story line, and it was fun to fight capital ships with. They gave you the old "We don't have any good ships left so heres a crappy one ticked out with a bunch of missiles, go get'em tiger."

And finally, Admiral Thrawn. Seriously if they make anymore Star Wars he had better be in them. The Thrawn Trilogy books were awesome, I love that he made it into the game.

Indeed, just look at the recent case where MacLean' Magazine (Canada's version of Time) got taken to the human rights commission for hate speech.

Watching that unfold really opened my eyes to just how draconian some of our hate speech laws are. The human rights commission has their own rules, and run a kangaroo court worthy of Stalin.

MacLean's only got out of it because they have such a large readership. A huge part of the Canadian population was watching the proceedings and the human rights commission had to let MacLean's go. Otherwise the public would have demanded their closure. But from what I have read a few smaller companies and individuals have been taken to the cleaners by these guys.

I am generally pretty happy with the laws here in Canada, but there are a few things that make you wonder what kind of clowns are running this country.

On a happier note, the Canadian RIAA pushed for those stupid levees on our CDs to compensate for piracy. They made a good buck on that scam too. But now the tables have finally turned. We already have a system for compensating them for piracy. They can lobby all they want but the legal precedent is in place. Generally judges are less corrupt then politicians, so we do stand a chance.

The Internet is, for the most part, pretty lawless. Sure they can bag a few people here and there, but pretty much you can do what you want. Enforcing any kind law on the Internet is, and will always be, very difficult.

As long as one of the networks on the Internet allows something, and people on other networks have access to that network, there is no stopping it.

If the mafia mega corps. keep fighting like this we will just end up with Internet safe havens. Think of the banking world: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, etc. At lot of developing countries would be great for this sort of thing. China, India, Vietnam, Thailand. These places have the infastructure, and people with skills. But the governments are more concerned about producing enough food, and keeping people employed. They won't care about enforcing IP laws.

Also there are some countries who would not follow suit for privacy reasons. Here in Canada it is illegal for the ISPs to match IP addresses with names, unless the police ask. Our privacy laws are pretty decent. So while it may be illegal to download off of bit torrent, there is no legal way to find out who is doing it.

The RIAA has been able to muscle its way into some more money by pointing the finger at piracy, so its not really surprising that other industries are trying their hand at it.

OK so don't upgrade to Vista you say? Well its not that simple.

1)Most systems today come with Vista on it, then you have to pay to downgrade, and mess around with drivers.

2)Most big organizations (eg. my University) just buy stuff in bulk. They are not going to downgrade all of the new machines they get. So if I need a faster computer to do my simulations I have to get a Vista machine, which as you stated can be 3% to 4% slower, even though the hardware is better.

3)Eventually new software will come out that only supports Vista, or MS will stop supporting XP (and all of the vendors/big corps with it). So Vista will be the only game in town.

I don't bitch about Vista because I don't like. I bitch about Vista because I will be forced to use it. If not now then in the near future. (Sorry I don't think most places are going to let me install linux on my workstation, although I do use it at home.)

MS should go back to the two tier system. Have one set for home users (Vista) and one set for workstations (XP+/Server 2008). That would make me happy.
