  1. wish I had these when making my first server. on Getting Help Building Your Computer · · Score: 1, Offtopic

I remember my first server system. I was suppose to be the expert (checkle). it was a gateway 233 (super fast for it's time) I had to install an HP suresture, writable CD, and SCSi hardrive. My first problem was what the hell was i thinking customizing a gateway. I had to cut a notch out of the board to ge the tape to fit. the board didn't recognise the SCSI kudoes to adaptec who not only helped me get it working but also gave me a few extra tips. Then I had to set up pllindrome which was backup software it required IPX what teh heck was IPX, needless to say after one sleepless weekend I got it working. My latest server is a Dell 2500 with a custom linux install.

2 years ago it costs approx.$1500 to set up an ISDN line in a clients office. thats 128k both directions.

today I just set up another client with two officed about 50 miles from each other with a T1 in both offices plus 6 voice lines each. one T1 is 256 the other 512. plus 16 IP's e-mail and such. If I were to call the local phone company and request this service I would be paying upwards of $1500 however with another company using the same exact lines as teh local company they can do it for $600 a month. why ? simple price fixing companies will always stretch technology as long as people are willing to pay. So even if all this wonderful fiber is available commercially I doubt companies will be willing to provide it to homes. keep in mind this involves trenching all over again. A more realistic option will be wireless with fiber running to each transmition point.

I may just be me but there seems to be a much higher emphasis on data than in the past ( I know i'm stating the obvious) our company just went with a telecom Allegience for our phone and Data one T1 split. The cost was suprisingly cheaper than say going SBC for phone and DSL. Concidering they gave us free callign between offices. a Stable connection with 16 IP's and any DNS routing we requested. ie. we could host our own Domain. The point I am getting to when one tried doing this in the past the cost was astronomical. Companies like these Allegience are smaller but growing more aggressive, and better managed. Ofcourse the big telecomes are loosing out. It all comes down to service. Why is it when I ask verizon to drop a T1 in my office there are million different charges and an astronomical fee. Yet another company who owns there own cable can do it for half as much and give me ten times better service. no really i mean it. and I dont work for them either.

I use alot of large format plotters. Right now regarding inkjet Encad and HP seem to be the favorites. Even bulk ink plotters like HP1050 series requires you to purchase an inktank instead of just pouring in more ink. Encad on the other hand sells jugs of milk that you can pour in on the fly even while printing.

I worked for a company making high end thermal printers and the trick to their sales were to force customers to use their inks and substrate. one by placing wierd punch patterns on the paper then patenting it. ofcourse this was played off as a superior punch pattern for accuracy. funny enough when the pattent ran out they left the patter behind. Secondly they constantly changed the firing patterns on the head of the printer so other films wouldn't work or last as long. When customers called up who used other products it was standard to blaim the non brand name film or substrate. It's no secrets companies strong arm customers into buying their peripherals and materials at a higher cost.
