I disliked the browser launcher at first too... but then I actually grew to like it. It's sort of convenient to be able to browse servers and then pop over to slashdot while the game is loading.
My interpretation of the charts is that less women enrolled in comp sci programs during both of the large influxes of students? I'm not sure what to gleam from that.
But people who graduate with comp sci degrees make more than graduates in other fields. You can argue that perhaps the work is worse in other ways but the pay should at least be attracting anyone smart.
I don't think it's super important to know the lines of code, it's more important to know the structure of how content is distributed on the internet. If people want to expand their information age knowledge, they should look to understand the structure of the internet, protocols and server architecture and such. That's what laymen need in order to keep up.
SXSW is a pretty big deal, it's known across the country if you're into modern music. It also has a good amount of techie stuff which has been covered by Slashdot in the last week.
Interesting article, but I'm going to categorize it under scare-mongering. I'll accept the next to nothing possibility of being still alive while they take my organs, if that means saving other's lives.
Really liked this article. I've experienced "flow" to a limited degree when playing music and playing video games, it's something I'd like to be able to attain more. The only time I really enter "flow" when playing music is when I'm improvising with other musicians and I get really 'in the zone' with what I'm playing.
A lot of shooting (accurately) depends on eye-hand coordination and motor learning to control superfluous movements that can mess up a shot. Will this stimulation do anything for that?
Actually the article says the exact same thing you said! In the article it says that professional soccer player's play-styles are different from beginner and amateur player's play-styles in that pros have less superfluous movements.
As a college aged kid I'm also finding it harder to enjoy video games as I used to.
It is something that can be grown out of, people change yadda yadda...
All I know is that I can't be mesmorized by a video game experience anymore as I could when I was younger.
You know what? Good for the porn company.
It's messed up that the EFF thinks that it's not okay to sue thousands of people at once. In my eyes, it seems like that's the best way to deal with it.
I mean, piracy is messed up. I pirate things, but I know that pirating things doesn't help the people that create it. Music, movies, books, porn, no matter what you are pirating it. The only way to sensibly deal with this in court is to deal with everyone who's committing the "crime" (I say crime in quotations because I'm not going to say if piracy is really a crime).
So I say good job porn makers. You guys are getting shafted, and it is messed up.
This is such a stupid article. It doesn't take into account atmosphere or presence of water at all. The only data the the guy uses is that there happens to be one planet 20 light years away that is roughly the same size as Earth. That is the only data he uses to come to his conclusion. What a waste of time.
Going back to the old story and looking at what data the companies used to predict the outcome, it doesn't surprise me it's inaccurate.
They used:
Betting market data
Elo ratings
Salary data
Historical World Cup data
Socioeconomic data
While that's not a bad way to start, what seems to be more important is how well the team plays together and the chemistry and attitude of the team in general. As we saw with England (and France), you can put a bunch of great soccer players on one team, but that doesn't mean they're going to play well together.
This summary doesn't accurately describe the intention of this device.
It was actually mentioned in my human-computer interactions class.
The idea is that a long-distance couple wears these vests and one of the couple can trigger the other couple's vest to simulate a hug.
So it's a way for long-distance couples to deal with being away from each other for a while.
A little silly, but a cute idea.
This just makes it a little bit easier. One could easily write a LUA script that/who's the player in-game between some intervals and save the info. Or the more geeky ones could write a program that uses WoW's protocol and logins to do the same (and relogins if disconnected).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but couldn't the user you're stalking ignore/ban you, and stop you from/who-ing them?
The problem with this is that there is no way for a user to opt-out.
So I say shame on Blizzard for putting all of us into Web 2.0, willingly or unwillingly.
Disclaimer: My WoW account has been rarely used for the last year or so. But you don't have to take my word for it, you can see for yourself now!
The technology behind this is interesting, unfortunatly I have a bad feeling the only games for this will be silly "casual" (there's that word!) games.
Maybe with just one killer app this will be worthwhile...

Can someone explain to me why it matters if more or less women are studying computer science?
Because we're tired of it being a sausage fest?

"Hacker?" You keep using this word, I do not think it means what you think it means.
If you RTFA, it says that they only count children when they're eight years old.

The guy the article's about was going to SXSW to do a talk when he got arrested.
If you don't care about American music festivals... why are you reading this article?

Yeah? Well, I'm going to go build my own mobile marketplace! With blackjack, and hookers! In fact, forget the mobile marketplace!

Considering most of the planets in our solar system have an atmosphere, it is not that far fetched...
That's all well and good, but I'm really a sucker for oxygen.

How does Africa already have a choke-hold on energy production? Are you confusing Africa with the Middle East?

This makes sense to me because companies can use each others names in TV commercials, Google ads seems like a sensible online analogy.
