This is true, even in "socialist Norway" we have the option of buying private insurance if we want to and there are even some privately run hospitals. However almost nobody are using them because they are not better than the government run hospitals.
There are a lot of drug companies doing research in other countries than Europe. Maybe you should do a bit of research;)
If you look at this list you can see that some of the biggest pharmaceuticals are based outside of the US. There is a lot of research going on in medicine in the universities around here as well.
Another wikipedia article states: "In terms of pharmaceutical R&D spending, Europe spends a little less that the United States (22.50bn compared to 27.05bn in 2006) and there is less growth in European R&D spending."
The US spends more money in percent of GDP in health care than any other country in the world. The Greece debacle is more about a government that increased wages and welfare to a point that the economy could not sustain, but it has nothing to do about health care specifically.
The Americans really need a single payer system like the rest of the world, so no this is not the correct way. However it think it appears a lot better than the current mess they have.
Download cap on an internet connection? I don't think anyone are selling that type of plans here over the pond..
A 40/20 VDSL2 connection is about $85/month and a 50/10 fiber connection downtown in Oslo is $65 without any caps. A full blown 250 mbit fiber connction will set you back $250.
All of this is uncapped of course:)
Oh and there are a total of 172 internet providers in the country so there is very strong competition in the market:) (4-5 million people total).
This is because we are no longer linking the binaries statically (one object file for each function), but are using dynamically linked libraries. And your libc is't loaded only for your program. The same spot in ram is shared between all programs that are using it making the total ram spent for each program rather small, probably even smaller than if you would statically link the object files of the functions you need.
I for one would think the "great steve" would actually innovate and implement iris scan into the device;) Isn't apple supposed to be the leader of innovation?..
Never mind that their department breaks down to something like 60% marketing, 30% design and 10% engineers (yes, I'm being generous)
They are when 99% of the "trained, professional journalists/writers" just spew out the same crap from AP or some other news source. Not many still write their own content, and when they do not have the in depth knowlege about the subject to write an intelligent article about it.
No, for a game that does not require constant development and support from GM's and need a big server with several thousand online at the same time, but a game like MW2 (even if they went the non-dedi route)..
And this is why you want player controlled dedicated servers for your favorite FPS or RTS game. A game studio will eventually shut down the central one because of the lack of $$. Oh and I am still waiting for a game studio to try the monthly fee route for their central server:p
I think the game is great, especially multiplayer with its leveling, perks and the amount of customization you can do to your characters game style. Even those who complain about things are still playing it full force.
I was one of the complainers and I still haven't bought it, so they lost the $$ from me.
Agree, no laws broken and this is probably the only way they can make money. If they let go of the hardware monopoly for os x, they can no longer sell standard pc hardware for twice the price that pc users pay. As long as mac users think this is fine they will keep os x very closed indeed.
So how long will it be until you can run accelerated h.264 video w/o tearing on multiple desktops and composting turned on with these drivers? I'd like to use an open source driver/gfx card, but I don't really think there will ever be enough manpower to create all the features we see in the blobs. Right now my friends 4870 does not work at all in linux with either open-source or fglrx blob (that is we get basic 2d but nothing else, or with blob we get 3d, but then 2d is messed up)
How is the video support now? I have a friend which unfortunately bought an ATI card and he gets major tearing in X with composting turned on, and it didn't support hardware accelerated h.264/mpeg/wmv. Also we couldn't get multiple desktops to work with either closed-source or open-source driver.
I'll buy an ATI card when they make usable linux drivers with accelerated video like vdpau. Right now the nvidia blob is so much better and i dont really care that it is closed source. I've have a couple of friend that use ATI, and the only reason they still have windows on the computer is the crappy ATI linux support.
It's funny that Microsoft are the only ones that are not able to make XP compatible software (DX10 and IE9)
Here is another article that lists spending in USD pr capita and the US is still far ahead of the rest ;)

So the research argument doesn't really bite.

I thought the difference between DX and SX was that the SX didn't have a math co processor.. Maybe I am remembering wrong though.. It is a while ago :)

A fool and his money are soon parted
Heck, i even run ubuntu 9.10 on my dual pentium pro 200 mhz :)
Its churning along fine running apache, postgresql and mediawiki!
And of course, its running on all my computers in the home.. P4, i7, c2d, laptop with c2d mobile.

How many Americans care to pronounce the "strange" names of foreigners correctly?
Its funny that when i am in the US, i am usually greeted with "Hello minster... minster... welcome!".
My name is a typical Norwegian one.
Finnbiff is rain deer meat :)

I think you can use EXT2/3 on mac via FUSE

Yeah my thought exactly
The ATI drivers don't support accelerated H.264 yet either do they?
