That was my first thought. I used to have a bird dog that, when let off the check-cord, would head for the horizon. It didn't matter that he was whistle trained. He could hear the whistle, and if he was on a check-cord he responded perfectly, but once off, well, if you had binoculars you could see his head turn when the whistle was blown, but he chose not to respond. The dog just loved to run. Unfortunately, it meant that the next several hours were spent chasing down the dog. The beeper collars don't help me track a dog, as I can only hear that frequency from one ear. Besides, who wants to walk in the fields with a dog that sounds like a garbage truck backing up? I would have loved to have something like a GPS tracker for him.

You are slamming the GPS for the wrong reason. The idea is that the unit will get you there, even if the route is not perfect. Google may have an advantage because they seem to have driven every street out there, where the Garmin routing is based only on the map.

Having said that, I have found entire highways missing from some of the Garmin base maps, and in one case with the detail maps, I could see my destination to the right, yet the GPS was wanting me to turn left, down a one-way street the wrong way. Now, that's crappy routing.

Are you talking about state fuel taxes, or federal fuel taxes? Because there are a number of states that put in far more federal fuel tax dollars than they ever get out for roads.

In any case, the point is that fuel tax money should be spent as the legislation stated. If more is needed, change the taxes to reflect that. Don't make up deficits from the general fund, or dump any surplus into the general fund. Other taxes too. How else can we decide what is needed if we can't tell where the money is coming from?

Why is insightful? The argument being made was not that tax money should not be spent on education, but that road use tax money should be spend on roads, but is instead diverted to other needs.

I don't mind paying gas tax for roads. I don't mind paying property tax for education. I mind like hell paying either only to find that the money was diverted to other things. We will never know the true cost of services with this kind of bullshit accounting going on.

All I said was that I found the idea of lasers projecting images directly on my retina disturbing. I find the idea of lens implants disturbing too, but that was not the topic at hand. I think there is a risk of losing eye function with this gizmo, but I am not advocating against it. If you want one, by all means, get one. I don't give a shit.

You can sue a lawyer for malpractice. Of course, you need another lawyer....

You can also file a bar complaint. The state bar association will investigate. And, in spite of, or perhaps because of, all the lawyer jokes, they take it seriously.

In the case of your land, that is what title insurance is for. However, what is usually in the closing costs for title insurance is to protect the bank, should there be a title error, so they don't lose the loan money. You have to buy your own title insurance to protect your investment. You can also get an abstract of title and check it out yourself, but the abstract costs money.

My experience with lawyers is that they will be more than happy to explain anything you want in more detail, but if you just sit there and nod, they presume you understand what is going on. Health care, legal care, or custom software, if you don't stay engaged, you won't get the outcome you want.
