i'll give you some phone numbers, you tell my customers what its gonna cost for them to have me sit there and install then configure linux on their servers. then when they all drop my company for support, you pay my rent now that im out of a job.
i didnt ask for their stuff to be running windows, it was like that long before i worked for this company. linux users of the world need to understand this: we cant all run linux everywhere, all the time. come out of your dark room long enough and visit the real world and see that sometimes what you have to work with is not always what you want to work with.
i do desktop and server support for small buisnesses that cant afford a fulltime IT staff. some of them run their own mail servers are are getting hammered pretty bad. Can anyone suggest a decent, doesn't have to be perfect, server side anti-spam filter? my only requirement is that because they're small buisnesses they don't have alot of money, so its gotta be for windows2000, and easy (1-2 hours) to install and setup so im not there all day because thats costly, and free as in beer?

i'm sorry you missed the point of my post, theres a difference between administering boxes and using them.
In the next 5 years, all smart companies are going to deploy Linux/OSS on at least some of their desktops. care to bet some money on this? i work with alot of smart companies, and they arn't going to, why have a mix when it isnt needed? its a support nightmare for one, and the cost of paying someone to support linux is alot higher than windows.
As for questioning how long I've used Linux, I find your whole approach to trying to discuss this subject with me rather off. I try to start a productive dialogue about getting Linux into the mainstream and so rather than attempting to debate my points logically, you attack my character and credibility? This is exactly my point about the community being a problem, a lot of you cant look past your own zealotry and hold nothing but arrogance over those who aren't you or Linus, and don't think like you.
You even prove my point for me. you think just becuase some software is OSS its good? i have news for you, its probly not. open or closed, alot of software sucks ass. just like alot of other professions, there are developers who suck, and a few, just a few, who are excellent at it.
and finally you attack me with "I'm sorry if you work for M$ or other antiquated proprietary tech company." when, again, you know nothing about me. well in fact I work for a tech company that tries very hard to get customers to use linux/OSS but this is where Linux in fact can become proprietary itself in a way. see, in my town of about 100,000 there about 4-5 companies that do what we do, if a customer uses microsoft then any of these companies can compete for there buisness, not just us. But since we are the only shop that deals in Linux, if they choose linux then they are stuck with us for support, soe where they can spend extra to buy MS products and then pay say $80 an hour for support to someone, if they choose linux we can charge then whatever we want and they're screwed! who else can they turn to? dont we then have a monopoly thanks to linux? arn't monopolies bad? isnt part of what people like you tout about linux/OSS being so great is that you have a choice? what kind of choice is that? choice isnt just for linux, these companies choose Microsoft, it doesnt matter what i suggest they use in the end, it's their money, and their call.
companies need support, and most OSS software offers none. unless you want to rent a coder to custom code it for you. do a lot of small companies have that kid of money? if you think the answer is "yes" then you haven't been paying attention to anythign i've said.

sorry to say it, but its true, dont give me the "its more stable, its more secure" stuff, you're preaching to the choir here, especiallly at slashdot.
Linux isn't going anywhere for awhile, im sorry, you just have to deal with it.

wheres the GPS mode? the full functional PDA features? maybe even a radio tuner? with 29MB of memory how useful is this as a mp3 player? more than all that what i'd kill for in a phone/phone service is better quality call sound. if 3G services have such a high data rate for better video capabilities, then why dont they use that to make calls sound less like a phone call and more like your sitting next to the person your talking to.
dammit lets just grab our torches and go out there, block any and all exits and burn SCO to the ground with all those swine inside. you do have a torch dont you? dont you? dammit i thought this was the dark ages again. no mother i haven't had my pills today yet.
how long until someone writes some worm that will pose as an automatic update and everyone using this method of updating gets infected that way? at some point you just stop supporting the stupid and the ignorant.
why do companies release needless papers stating their position on stupid things such as this, for once i wanna see a company release a press statment to a company pulling crap like SCO that says "Get fucked." what more do you need to say? seriously i'm not trying to start a flame war here, think about it, whats the most simple way to deal with SCO right now? sometimes you need a simple message for simple minded people.
What is needed is a live action Gundam film, and yes i know there already is one, i want one i can see in theatres. With the current crop of superhero/sci-fi action films doing so well (spider-man, x-men, the matrix) i thikn a movie about giant city smashing robots would do pretty well, its a fairly new concept to americans.
other than for laptops, at our company, (a small consulting firm, that helps other small buisnesses with their computing needs) we have found wireless to be awaste of money. issues with configurations, signal strength, security conserns, costs and lack of speed keeps everyone away. Our personal view is until can get gigabit wireless for the same price as wired, then wireless is mostly a gadget, reserved for the gotta have it croud, before you flame me for saying that, think about it. in a buisness environment, where everyone is tethered to a desk, wireless is worthless.
Try it! Go to http://pr0n.slashdot.org/ its a good URL. I knew it! That's why they haven't been recording any more "geeks in space" they're too busy with their own little porn empire!

Remember the episode where Fry wants to watch Star Trek but he can't because it's been banned after it became the laregest religion ever and almost destryoed the world? If this thing gets made we are all soooooooo screwed. The battle between the old testament and the new testament will now be between Kirk vs. Picard, old Trek vs. new.
My local CompUSA, which I normally avoid like the plague, has a cool deal, but your mileage may very.
Dig this: if you buy a printer and get the 2 year replacement plan (~$20 US), they'll give you free ink for that 2 years. Just show up with the slip saying you bought the replacement plan, and bam; they give you what you need. (I have heard that some stores require you turn in the old cartridges, though I have yet to have to) If you print a lot like I do, you more than pay for the cost of the printer and the replacement plan. And the way printers don't last now, in 2 years, you just start over again. If they still do this in 2 years, I'll be back there again for sure.
had anyone know of a site where you can compare prices on ink?
