This last session here in Washington State, some idiot tried to pass a bill that would change the words "At risk children" in all laws, state documents, etc... to "Children at Hope". She even wrote pleading editorials on the subject. All this while we were facing a huge (and still are) budge deficit, declining revenue, and all the other associated evils of the recession. But do these kinds of idiots get voted out? Oh no. The wrong lizard might win instead.

I believe culturally you are disarmed, because you have been over the decades trained to be that way. Gunz r bad, gunz have no place in the home,etc... I'll wager if a US style gun shop with modern Glock pistols, semi auto AK-47's, high powered hunting rifles, defensive shotguns, and other sporting and defensive arms was possible in England, it would have no shortage of customers. Just look at your airsoft fans, or that kid who built a gun from lego bricks. The demand is there, and they are satisfying themselves as best as possible with a poor substitute for the real thing.
IIRC you mainly can have.22 rifles and very low capacity shotguns. If you are lucky I believe some can get permits for ancient bolt action rifles. On top of that you need ammo permits, and are forced to store the guns locked, broken down and apart from the ammo.
I have a loaded.357 on my table, and a dozen loaded AK-47 magazines if I wanted to insert them into a rifle. I can buy a semi automatic belt fed.50 caliber if I had the money. Compared to an American, you are disarmed. You effectively can only use your guns for sport, and using them to protect your home, your family or yourself is pretty much impossible.

1. It is possible to carry guns legally in most of the US. In many places, even openly and without a permit. I have a permit to carry concealed, and also openly carry mine.
2. In many places the cops support your right to keep and bear arms. Heck, I've even sold guns and gun parts to local cops. Friend of mine lives in a rural area, and when he moved out there, the local Sheriff's Deputy made a courtesy visit. The deputy asked if my friend had a gun. When he replied in the affirmative, the deputy said "Good. If you are lucky I can get here in half an hour if there is a problem. You are really on your own out here."
Americans know what happens when criminals carry guns too; that is why law abiding citizens carry guns. The gun is not the problem, any more than a bottle of beer is the direct cause of drunk driving. It is the misuse of that beer, or whiskey or firearm that is the problem.
I don't care if cops are armed or not. In fact I don't mind it in the least. Why? Because I am armed as well, and in fact am as well armed as any beat cop if I choose to be. I have had many a pleasant conversation with police officers while I was armed, and nobody thought it was strange. It's just how we do things over here in many places.

And when WWII happened, you had allowed yourself to be so heavily disarmed, that citizens in the US sent their privately owned rifles and handguns so that your home guard units could be armed. I can go to a nice happy corporate coffee shop that doesn't pretend to be edgy, hip and cool simply because they cater to the liberal nutter crowd. Never thought I'd miss yuppies...

One thing that the SCOTUS used in making the Heller decision was arms that are in common use. If lasers started being commonly used, one could argue in favor of protecting the right to use them.
Of course, one could also argue that the right to access personal defense weapons should not be limited to current conventional norms.
If the neighbor got the first call off and said "OMG HE PULLED A GUN ON ME FOR NO REASON" the cops are probably going to respond. I've never had to draw or display a weapon in a deterring fashion, but if I did, I'd probably report the interaction to the local PD just so I get my story in first. Plus I know the local cops which helps.

You in essence were stating that you were willing to used armed force over the consumer sale of a phone. Concealed carry permits are not given out to allow you to enforce the law, but to protect yourself from potentially lethal harm. (Or in many states you are allowed to intervene to save the life or protect someone else from severe bodily harm) YMMV, IANAL.
I am a concealed carry permit holder myself, and also often open carry, and am disgusted by the attitudes of people like you. Gives the rest of us a bad name.
