Surprise, beef is substantially subsidized by the US government. If you removed the subsidies then we would all save a lot of money, beef would be for the rich and we could have nice things like health care.
Yeah, unlike soy or corn./s
Soybean Subsidies in the United States totaled $37.4 billion from 1995-2017
Corn Subsidies in the United States totaled $111.2 billion from 1995-2017.
Livestock Subsidies in the United States totaled $10.8 billion from 1995-2017.
If you install an app and get full screen ads, just uninstall it. Or read more than 1 review to see if it's worth installing. If you encounter full screen ads, just hit the home button to get back to your home screen.
Install a firewall on your android device.
There are plenty of free firewalls to choose from. You can control various types of access and deny access to either specific sites or accesses to sites by app or even global rules.
You'd be scared/amazed to see what is trying to access external sites on the Internet. If nothing else, you will reduce your data use by blocking acceses from your device.
For instance, I really don't have any idea why my flashlight app would be accessing anything other than the camera led. I see it trying to phone home, and block it permanently.
I'd like for someone (else) to create a bunch of rules for me to use so my apps never try to talk to bookface or other trackers.
especially smart ones. I guess it's a Ford/Chevy kind of loyalty.
When SONY made 200lb 30+inch CRTs they were pretty good.
Nowadays, SONY is overpriced and under performs compared to most other vendors/.
And don't get me started on "smart" televisions.
I'd much rather toss a $100 media box when it becomes useless than have to bypass all the smart features by blocking a tv on WIFI after updates are discontinued (and still have to buy a media box).
Over time tvs also stop being powerful enough to run updated software that works on media boxes, tablets or smart phones.
If a tv doesn't have at least 2GB of memory, don't call it "smart".
Oh and please don't even bother with other integration like alexa/siri/google... voice spying "services" or usage/metric reporting back to the mothership./RANT off
Things are relative. For most of the US, just having a mass transit system is something that makes NYC notable. Most major cities, at best, might have a few bus routes, if that. I know where I live, Austin, there have been one upgrade in mass transit in the pass 20 years.... a single light rail train track, which doesn'teally go to places it is desparately needed (like the college campus.)
Even a gondola system similar to Rio would be nicer and more practical than what is in use in this city as of now.
Yeah, I know how bad it is. A week or two ago I rode a bus to the city near me for the first time in about 40 years. There are 2 early morning trips and 2 afternoon return trips. Good news, it was only $1 each way for a 25+ mile trip and there was plenty of space. The bad news was 1.5 (the other route was 2+) hours and up to 28 stops, which ended in a bus terminal about a mile from where I had an appointment.
There isn't any bus service on weekends. No subways, local trains, light rail or monorails available.
This cannot be understated. Politics has been almost like a comedy show than anything these last 2-3 years. Makes me want to vote for the guy in 2020 just to keep the entertainment alive.
My personal favorites:
Warren 1/2020th. Women clawing at SCOTUS doors. To Canadian PM: Didn't you guys burn down the WH? CNN wrestling meme tweet. People walking on a highway at night to protest election results. (Spoiler, someone got hit)
I just hope (and I am by no means anything near an optimist) someone worth electing is actually nominated by a party for 2020.
And the FCC is busy rewriting code (legal code) to strip local municipalities of their right to manage their open spaces and licensing revenue forcing muni's to permit carriers to mount transmitters on every single light pole, building corner, sign or bump of dirt the carrier desires under the blanket of a "master contract".
Yea, it will only cost you 5 Billion and the next national election..... Don't be fooled, this isn't about money... it's about votes.... For BOTH sides.
This is the type of thought which allows people like Trump to get elected. Once you convince yourself no politicians actually care about the electorate at any level, who cares who gets voted in?
What caused Trump to get elected was lack of any other choices, and the high entertainment value.
I have nothing against having a woman as president. Just not a Clinton. or a Kennedy. or a Bush. We've had enough of that.
With very few exceptions, there aren't that many Congress Critters that should be re-elected.
There's a windows sticker or two on my laptop that seem to be super glued on.
I've run windows on it twice.
Once to create a backup in case I need to re-install if I resell it.
The second time was to see if there was any way to manually control the system fans. (there wasn't)
After that, it was scorched earth for windows. I've run linux on it exclusively for like 7 or 8 years.
Moral of the story is, a sticker is just a sticker, unless you're trying to lie to people about supporting something that doesn't exist. (Shame on you AT&T)
Where I live, Amazon delivery drivers have already been caught stealing packages from porches when dropping off their deliveries. The tools in my garage are a lot more valuable than any package on my porch.
Amazon Logistics seems to be the culprits in most of these. If delivered via FedEx or even UPS, problems seem to be very minimal.
The other problem that has been observed is they don't bother delivering packages, but mark them as delivered. I guess this makes for good "metrics".
I store all my data on a 2 TB NAS, with plenty of headroom. I really can't think of too many ways I could take advantage of a 20 TB HDD. I'm guessing the market for this stuff will be mostly the people who are collecting and storing data ON you, not FOR you.
I have about 3tb used on the NAS I have. Most of it is replaceable in the case of a failure. I keep my photos and other stuff in a couple places, including a local backup drive and remote NAS I setup. With 50Mb/s up, overnight diffs don't take very long.
I still have about 100 Blu-rays and 1K DVDs I'd like to rip at full size with menus and extras. Mostly because I'm too lazy to walk across the room to pick one out to watch. Maybe I just need a jukebox robot to pick them...
I'd consider getting rid of them all (donated to local library) once they're ripped and duplicated a couple times.
How about a more affordable car without all the auto-driving bullshit?
Something to compete with the Smart EV, the Nissan Leaf, etc.
"Smart" Consumers (and producers) probably realize that ownership of cars have a narrow window of relevancy remaining. There are probably less than 10 years left before vehicle ownership is thought of as quaint.
. Once fleets of smart EV vehicles, called by an app on your phone, with quick response and high availability are common, most people won't be buying cars.
They'll be buying memberships for frequent smart car use.
People who live in geographically challenged areas (or road warriors) will probably still need to buy something for commuting, but in major cities, and suburbs, most people won't need to bother buying a car.
Are there any car manufacturers that makes a non-connected just plain, regular car currently?
Federal law requires back-up cameras in new cars. Once you have a backup camera and a radio, you might as well have an Entertainment System. Once you have an Entertainment System you might as well have phone, and music from the phone. Designing five different "radios" isn't free, so they design one and use it in everything.
I was driving a 2000 model year car until I traded it in last year for a new car. I didn't think I cared about all the features on the new car, but now that I have them, I kinda don't want to forego them. It's a slippery slope.
And TBH, forty years ago I used to fantasize having many of those things on the cars I was driving then and thought they'd be cool to have.
40 years ago, I used to fantasize about having a semi air horn instead of a weak beep, and a BB machine gun mounted in the back of my car.
I settled for replacing my cars AM radio with 'gasp' an AM/FM stereo cassette player and 4 speakers I had to manually cut out and install.
I also added an alarm system. I hand soldered components onto with a breadboard I bought from some mail-order catalog. The insurance discount I got paid for it repeatedly.
Everybody in the audience gets a VPN. And if you have a good ad-blocker, I'd go with that too, just in case.
Seriously, are there alternatives to Bell in Canada, or any privacy laws to protect consumer privacy or rights?

I don't mind a bit of soy in my diet, but most non-animal equivalents taste nothing close to tasty animals.
Unless it's substantially cheaper than beef, I'll pass.

LG 64.5inch OLED is under $2400. NON-OLED 65in 4k TVs show as low as $530.
I'm still not sold on OLED, I remember there were issues with the displays degrading over time.
I'd be concerned with mechanical failures too. Either the mechanism to roll the screen, or the fact the screen is being rolled make me leery.
When are we going to have rollable tablets like in the movie Red Planet? http://www.flashfilmworks.com/...
https://blog.nwf.org/2018/03/m...
I've been allowing milkweeds to grow on my property since I bought it. I mow around them...
At least we don't have a goon squad running around checking for oeoples television licenses (yet) /s
You can buy a nice antenna.
If you want more content, you can get the slingtv app for way less than probably basic cable in your area.
You can toss in Netfltx and Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
The break even point is about 2 months of cable for all of the above.
I shudder to think what the last person on cable tv will be getting charged to mae up for all the cord-cutters.
especially smart ones. I guess it's a Ford/Chevy kind of loyalty.

I would automatically say Microsoft Surface, with pen + dock + monitor + keyboard + mouse, but empower her.
I do agree "Tell her your budget and requirements (e.g. "Windows") and let her go buy what she likes."
Why pay a small form factor surcharge for a surface device?
I'd look into a 17in laptop, or a smaller laptop with a docking station and a bigger monitor for normal office work.
And spend some money on "good" anti-virus software.
You should also think about how/if you're doing file sharing between you, and maybe how to backup any work-related data she will be creating.

about how bad Starbucks coffee is too.
Rescind any tax credits, and put even higher amounts of rent control in place to minimize "issues"
Or make Amazon dump 1 or 2 billion into fixing mass transit

It's not like 5G is a just a bogus label over 4G or anything.. right? https://www.theverge.com/2019/...
oops.
In this case, the government shutdown is probably doing us a favor.

As usual "Unlimited" means you can hit your data cap at 5g speeds, which means much faster.

My browser knows how what to do with different file types, and if it doesn't, it prompts me to select an application.

Once they get down to about $100, I guess a few drives would be enough to backup all the devices in my home, and maybe store some other media.
Until then rsync diffs to a remote NAS will be good enough.
There isn't much on my systems that can't be downloaded again after installing extra apps and my personal data.

Like Roosevelt did, create a new CCC, or you could use community service sentences to do the work.
If there are arrests for trespassing... sentence them to work in the parks.
is that despite their promises, after 6 years there still isn't a google provided linux client.
