  1. Re:Australia on To Encourage Biking, Lose the Helmets · · Score: 1

I grew up on a farm, we never had to wear helmets even when on the motor bikes, I mostly wore one seeing it was bought for me, I never had a serious accident and nothing that a helmet would have protected me against.

Eventually I moved to the city and ended up riding through northern and central Sydney. I was always quite conservative and always wore a helmet and a UV vest. Mainly wore a helmet to avoid the fine of not wearing one.

I made a dash through a an amber light, the bus driver coming the other way turning right didn't see me and clipped me. I went down pretty quick. I remember thinking this is really going to suck slamming my head into the road... Oh the sweet, sweet feeling of having your head slam into the ground wearing a helmet. There is no better feeling in the world!!! I then jumped up, got off the road and started patting things down to see what was broken/bleeding. A slightly grazed cheek, knee and hand, no concussion and back riding to work in 10 mins. Someone saw it all, chased down the bus and we exchanged details, hence why it took 10 mins to go back riding.

I really like our mandatory helmet laws. I don't care so much for our our healthcare and compulsory third party car insurance... yet

Put Simply... there is no God, no Heaven, no Hell, no Devil, no reincarnation, no magic...

These figures/beliefs were created by the same creatures who believe and idolise them, i.e. humans.
In our existance (this world, universe) there are things that occur in this world that we cannot yet explain, this can make us feel somewhat insignificant and futile in our existance. It raises such questions as
    • Why am I here?
    • What is my purpose?
    • What will happen to me when I no longer exist?
    • What will be the consequences of my actions in this life?
This can somewhat be related to the need to believe in something!! (put simply in one aspect). Humans also feel compelled to hold morals and respect for others. Some(most) of us naturally become upset when people are treated unfairly(+many synonyms). Religion has been designed and evolved to accomodate and somewhat enforce this. E.g. don't kill, don't steal, don't cheat people, don't kill animals, don't eat meat, don't be greedy etc. Someone could probably better explain this need better than I can but be seen to be present in every culture with certain themes current through out.

Here are some other characters that I have believed in over my life (especially as a child) that were created by man
    • Santa Claus
    • The Tooth fairy
    • The Easter bunny
    • Superman
    • The Teeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
    • Monkey Magic
    • Jesus
I was told by an enlightened Christian friend in the past that I would be going to hell after I died due to me not accepting God and Jesus... at the time I didn't ask her what the consequences were for no longer believing in the other characters, I wonder what the consequences would be?

  14. So the bible shouldn't be taken literally? on Kansas Board of Ed. Adopts Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

Hey everyone, the bible shouldn't be taken literally!!

Having been brought up and influenced by the Christian church for the first 17 1/2 years of my life I am now a devote Atheist. 2 years at a Catholic school for my final schooling did it for me. My parents still got to church.. more for a social occassion though as they are farmers and live in a small aging community.

Just like any religious text that has been passed down through the ages the messages behind the text rather the literal meaning of the texts what should be taken from them. Only being exposed to a Christian bible initially I still got this impression (stories of a basket of fish and bread feeding 2000, a guy being swallowed by a whale, 18000 specises of animal on an Ark, a burning bush?? BS) though this was reinfored when I saw a ballet of the Ramayana. This is a Hindu religious book which mentions a story of prince getting help from a white monkey, Hanaman to get his wife back... I think, spelling excused. The Gist was, you treat people like shit, it's going to come back on you, now behave!
Now if people who took the bible literally were exposed to such a story maybe they'd take the bible a little less literally... though Christianity has had certain constructs added to it over the years to make it difficult to come to terms with this, e.g. don't worship false idols/gods, being the only religion etc.

Another shock... Australia has a large sparse rural community. Not everyone lives in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Darwin, Perth or icky Canberra. So what you are saying is right... 3.7% of GDP.. not much, but the generated affect on rural communities... might count for a larger

(From a N.S.W perspective) Maybe your thinking drought assistance??? Seeing a large of farmers haven't had an income for the past 3-5 years.... Try putting yourself in their position.... in some cases having to take loans or extend loan repayments for (3-5 years !!!!!) to keep their livestock alive, farms going etc...

Sure you might have a credit card debt, or loan to payback but the job you do from 8:30-5:30-6pm five days a week actually brings you in an income and you live relatively secure. What if the job did from 7-7:30-6:30pm 6-7 days a week wasn't bringing you in an adequate income all because it hasn't rained? How would you cope?

As others have stated though... Sure, dump the agricutural industry... let native regrowth take back the land and water systems... what then for rural communities?
You want to import all of our fruit, vegatables, cotton, leather, milk, cheese, wool, wine (big irrigators), fish (I'm guessing you haven't heard of fish farms...), rice, cereals (wheat etc) bread, sugar (soft drinks, beer, all fast foods, ethonol), juices, meat, soy??? Take a look at the bigger picture... take a year off and go work as a farmhand/shearer/station hand and see what really goes on. Take note of the working conditions (No ADSL/CABLE!!!, poor mobile coverage) and rates of pay... Find out what oat/wheat dust feels over your skin on a 40 (C) degrees day, (a slight itch ;) ) handle livestock, help birth a animal as large as/or larger than a sheep... treat some fly strike (Every one from PETA should have to treat fly strike as an initiation to their membership).
