Just to keep this "what if" rolling; I know that in the US some pumps have a limit how much gas can be pumped on a single credit card swipe. I thought it was something like $70-$80 limit, and the pump would shut off and you'd either have to re-swipe or bring your credit card inside. It's very easy for a large truck (with a normal tank) to have this happen at US gas prices in VA (which has pretty low gas taxes), and I believe UK petrol prices are almost an order of magnitude larger. If this is the same over there, you might have to have 3 or so different credit cards to get around this and make this non-auditable from a credit card company perspective.

What the questions show is BIAS. Restrictive questions were given, and humans seem to implicitly fill in with details from their life. In my example, with the "restrictions on housing development" question I immediately thought to a town in my county where houses couldn't be above a certain height. So I thought, "What's the harm?" My experience and bias came shining through. And in the example of #5, of course the plight of Foxconn workers comes to mind, but that's not in the question. Really, the correct answer is "5: Not Sure" because I need more details and more framing for all questions.

  16. Re:Good graphics on a shoestring budget: Possible? on Indie RPG Struggles On Xbox, Yet Thrives On Steam · · Score: 1
My initial intention was to say people are more forgiving of graphics on a computer rather than a console. I'm not saying that computers can't provide all the bells and whistles when it comes to visual output. In fact, I'd go one step further that computers are better adept given their inherent modularity (upgradable graphics cards being the prime thing). Consoles are stuck. But I will play a game on a 12" laptop (even though I can HDMI out on my macbook) and my needs are more forgiving. For example, a Lode Runner type clone doesn't need awesome graphics it just needs smooth and fast gameplay physics. (NB: just noticed that Lode Runner on XBLA has majorly updated graphics!)

And as for your second question, I have a real world example of that. My friend wrote http://wmdtb.com/ (wmd tank battle) and couldn't draw for crap. He hired an artist and still wasn't all that pleased with the outcome. So I do not know how one gets over that hurdle efficiently; I think it's only through dumb luck or ruthless, singleminded drive to get your vision implemented with worthy graphics. And if you have any advice, I'm sure he'd love to hear it (though as he says "this was an itch he had to scratch" and I'm certain he won't make game design his day job)

And as much as I am on the "playability beats graphics" just last week on the Blood Bowl internet leagues I saw people chatting about how a free java version of blood bowl was "laughable because it wasn't even animated." Good graphics are a REALITY of modern gaming. Do I want to see pixellated crud on my 55" 1080p tv? In the immortal words of Er, "damn no." But on a laptop or on a minimized screen off to the side? sure thing. pop it in and I'll relive my phantasy star days!
