This is nothing new. A friend's mother was diagnosed with cancer back in 1980 and she found a book promoting eating various sprouts as a "cure" for cancer. The family spent the next year growing sprouts in huge trays for her until she died. Didn't help a bit.
You are probably not the target market for this since you live in a densely populated area.
I live in an area where the spacing between houses averages over a quarter-mile in any direction. I would love for a drone to deliver my packages instead of the lazy delivery driver just saying "address doesn't exist" or "cannot find address" because they don't want to drive down my road.
It might annoy my donkey, though, but I'll risk coming home to an annoyed donkey in exchange for actually getting my packages.
I think a key phrase is "being part of the team helping keep people safe, which is really what people at the agency think they are doing"
So he admits they just think that they are helping keep people safe. Or that they have convinced the lower echelons that public safety is their goal, when higher-ups like him know better.
Funny you should mention Internet access with AirBNB, and how much you enjoyed being unplugged.
I rent a cabin on my property through AirBNB. It's out in the country 30 miles from the nearest city. It has no Internet, and it's in a valley so there is no TV reception, though I supply a DVD player and about a hundred DVDs. About half my guests (generally the younger generations) complain about the lack of internet and TV on the first day. When they leave a couple days later they always tell me how refreshing and nice it was to be truly unplugged and out of contact with the world for a few days. EVERY one of the people who complained at first has told me how much they ended up enjoying being unplugged.
So my advice to you kids who have grown up with cell phones, internet, etc. is to give being unplugged for a while a try. It's amazingly relaxing.
We snuck into the school at night, typed the programs from magazines into a TTY printer terminal in my high school, that was connected to a mainframe at the local university. We didn't even have a monitor, all commands and results were printed on striped, continuous-feed printer paper.
And we got in trouble for it, too! The school got a bill for the mainframe time used. Or we WOULD have gotten in trouble if anyone knew it was us. As it was, the terminal got locked up at night after that. The 70's were the wild and wooly days of computalyzin'!
Quantum physics used to confuse me too, but then I started smoking really good weed. Now, it is starting to make sense. Seriously. Drugs can help you understand this stuff. I may need DMT to fully comprehend quantum physics, though.
Holy heck this is as true as it gets. I was a 2 to 3 soda per day man for most of my life. A couple years back I cut out all sodas, regular or diet.
Now I can taste food properly. Sodas taste too sweet to drink, most fast or packaged food tastes WAY too sweet or salty. Healthy foods taste GOOD, like they should without that salt and sugar overload that I used to live with. I feel healthier at 50 than I did at 40.
Cut out the sodas, kids, even the diet ones. After a few weeks you'll feel much better.
I'd hand 'em a table of hashed user names, and let them sort it out. "That's how it is in our DB, man. We just encrypt what the user enters and compare."
So you think millions of humans with millions of differing attention levels, skill levels, alertness levels, differing visual abilities, physical abilities, inability to communicate with each other, etc. is better than millions of computers with all equivalent abilities and which can communicate with each other? So that 16 year-old and that 89 year-old on either side of you are better than strictly computer controlled vehicles?
Thought is wonderful. It doesn't matter one whit. Reaction and reaction speed is what is critical in any non-standard driving situation, not thought.
True, I was recently dismayed when I added up my assets, subtracted my debts and found out I was a millionaire. I still have to get up and go to work in the morning.
This doesn't match my childhood dreams of being a millionaire!
My last major project: Manager: What resources do you need for this project (Replacing a huge, entirely file-based factory product manufacturing system) ME: At minimum, I need two more people, plus someone to take over most of my smaller duties. And a couple new DB servers. Manager: How long will this take? ME: Two years minimum, since we are replacing an entrenched 15 year old system.
Manager's report to director: He can do it by himself in 6 months.
3 months later: Manager: Why isn't this finished? You started over a year ago! ME: I started three months ago, you gave me nothing I asked for and you've given me several other projects since then that you said were higher priority. Manager: Well stop wasting time and get to work! I told the director it would be done by now! ME: You gave me nothing. At least let me have a CS temp. Manager: There's a woman in finance who has a sister that might want the job. She knows Excel really well, she can probably learn databases and programming.
Aaaand I think we've all been there.
Fortunately the sister didn't want the job and I got a great college grad as a temp. I would not have finished the project (in two years) without his help, we hired him after a year, too.
Teach her not to be afraid. Don't be afraid to try new things. Try all the things. Don't be afraid to go against the popular ideas. Do what you think is best.. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. Ask for it! Don't be afraid to do what you want. Do it! Don't be afraid to travel. Go!
Women and girls especially need to stop believing they are weak and helpless. They need to learn their strengths and learn to reduce their weaknesses. Nobody is respected for their fears. Learn to not be afraid and you will get respect.
I actually did move to Canada after getting disgusted by REAL ID. I'm starting to think I should have moved to Uruguay.
You know, about 30 years ago I would think "If I had to leave the US, where would I go?" And one of the countries that always came up was Uruguay. Apparently I was quite prescient in my 20's.
Pardon me as I adjust my tinfoil hat, but convenience isn't the ultimate goal. I imagine the ultimate goal is to capture as much data as possible for a variety of uses.
Exactly that. Plus the fact that they've created a whole new market to make people feel like they need to buy something they don't need.
But I'm old. I've seen the "smart home" touted every few years for the past 4 decades. It was probably touted in the 60's as well, but I was too busy playing astronaut then to read about it. The "smart home" and the "video phone" come around with a new implementation every 10 years or so, then they fade into the woodwork until the next group of geniuses thinks "You know what people just HATE? Flipping switches to make things happen!"
My wife is also somewhat averse to coding. But she LOVES network administration. She's a CCIE, gets paid very well and loves solving network and voip issues.
Whereas I've been doing IT/networking/database/coding BS for over 25 years and I'm pretty sick of it all by now. I'm paid well, but just burnt out. I have a plan to quit in three years and do anything else.

Mr Pither! It Works!
You know how I know you don't know any Iranians?
You know how I know you're a shill?
Go back to blowing Bibi, baby.

I live out in the country, so errant electronics are often used as shooting targets. Much more fun than cans.

Get off'n my lawn you young punk!

Don't make things worse, they're Badenov.

And will it run Linux?
Local man passionate defender of what he imagines Slashdot to be.
Google "Tiger Oil Memos" for an example.
you'll still like sex and music even when you're over fifty. You just won't be staying up late to enjoy them.
You need to tell my wife that bit about staying up late. She likes to keep me up until 3 am having sex. I am tired all the next day.
Women in their fifties are amazing sex machines.

I'm safe until they produce a better sexbot. After that, who the fuck will care?
"Spaced out on their pot"?
Methinks we have found one of those drug warriors.
