Whats interesting is that we don't know as much as we want to think we know about GMOs. It is all a lot of hand waving.

You mock but this is all in the realm of possibility. There is just a need for the same number of people that demand that exact device and are willing to pay for its development. Which is what the OP is missing. This product is there because people want it not because the company wanted to make it. He is basically complaining that society enjoys technical advances.

There are advances in technology that make your demands feasible if not completely possible given the money. A gas detector could be used to test freshness of the coffee, like the one used on pears. The maker could easily be connected to the taps, like the ice maker. Easy to clean is relative considering designs. A tassimo like design would fit the bill. You could then give the thing an ip and have it track where you are using the gps in your phone so it ensures that it finishes as you open the door.

Obviously everyone doesn't need this, but it does not mean that some people with the means and money won't and it will get built. At least technology is there to afford the choice.

Same thing happened when they started taxing pot. The courts had to strike down the tax because it legitimized those peoples position. I for one would like an independent study on how pirating is effecting the industry and costing it money before the tax is legitimized or the tax is just legitimizing illegal activity. Even then it should not be burdened on to a single product.

In TFA it mentions that it starts to become spaghetti. As ISP get smart and start blocking that address block the criminal moves on to other things. The lease expires on the block and it is issued to a legit company and then problems happen because the blacklists are not updated by the ISPs. IPv4 also is a very limited size so you can't just rotate around the blocks you issue every 100 or so years (conservatively) and avoid this issue.

One of the major issues with that is the amortization of bandwidth. When multiphase signal came out it really screwed a lot of projects up because they budgeted the project expecting to get a premium on the bandwidth. ISPs struggle with the fact that unpredictable advances in technology really screws them over because they can't just throw out what they have before it has paid for itself, yet there is new technology that reduces the price of bandwidth. Yes it doesn't significantly consume more resources, but the installation costs are huge.

I realize it might also be the case that it is going unreported. Either way it will get developers motivated to fix the issues. See Microsoft for example. I agree, but they aren't really like the record industry where they are struggling to use an outdated business model using outdated methods of shipping that are no longer needed. They see it as a monopoly situation so demand for their product is rather inflexible. By controlling the release of their product they can tier the charging and make more money as people become more willing to buy in. Movies aren't really inflexible though. I don't really need movies so I will just spend my money on something else until the price comes into my price range, like $2 at the rental store. I don't really see where their argument is going. They aren't really selling more product they are just trying to add another pricing tier to capture more profit when it won't.
