Here in europe its quite common to subsidize prices of mobile phones and laptops with 3G. So you get 300 - 400 EUR off the price if you bundle it with a 3G contract. And 3G costs around EUR 9 here in Austria (per month). So its quite a good deal...
We use SAP HR in our company and are about to migrate to Linux (Server). If you just need something that "runs on Linux", I would suggest you use a standard application like SAP (which is quite ok for the size of your company). If you look for something open-source, you have to keep looking.
Although, SAP's source-code is "open" as far as you can download, read and modify the source (ABAP?). You would have to pay for your users (onetime fee and maintanance fee) depending on how much data the user sees...
As there was a rumor that ATI (main grapic-chip-supplier of the intel-based Macs) is going to release a new version of their graphic chips, maybe there will be an upgraded version of iMac, Mac Pro and maybe MacBookPro!? The timing would be excellent...
Hi guys. We had the CFC-discussion here many years ago. Nice to see that you CAN change the world.
When I read about the Montreal Protocol, it comes to my mind, that there is another, VERY important thing, that should be done: the Kyoto Protocol.
Its so sad to see that America as on of the main emissioner of greenhouse gases has not joined the Kioto protocol which trys to lower emissions of greenhouse gases below the level of 1990. See Wiki.
I bought the HL2 dvd and installing it with transgaming cedega was no problem. But when I try to register the game, it tells me to install HL2 first...
As I heared from transgaming, they will support HL2 with cedega 4.2 (which will be out on Dec 7).
As I dont want to install windows on my computer, Ill have to wait until then...
I have my liquid body armor all over my stomach and on the side of my hips for 8 years now and there were no problems yet.
You can make your own LBA: fat fast food and bear make it grow very quickly. I have not tested it on bullets or knives yet as I live in Europe but the LBA forms quite well over my N/A-muscles.
There is a 50EUR-voucher which I received from Amazon for any item (except books and magazines) if you buy a total of EUR 500. Because the 40GB iPod costs more than EUR 500, you can get a 10% off the normal iPod price...
My understanding of the open source community always was, that it provided everybody with the tools to create whatever you want with your computer. And in return, you should provide your work which comes out of it to all others.
In the first seconds of reading the readme.sco-file I thought all this would be given up by the FSF for a revenge on sco. To make it clear: I do not like what sco does there with all the PI-issues but would this be a reason to give up main principles of the open source community just for a "REVENGE"?
I'm very glad that it did not happen...
Love, Gery

The only hardware-force apple demanded were 128 MB RAM for MacOS X.
i just wanted to mention that in Austria you have to give your admission to receive email. Only then, a company may send you an email.
So even "first contact" may only be made if a prior acceptance is available (ex. with a tip-on-card where the user gave his email-adress or whatever...).
Afaik, this is the strongest law in the EC (and of course by far stronger than US-laws).
Well here in central Europe, I am much delighted to be able to see Roswell.
Its the best built up story (so far - we're at the beginning of the 2nd season, so I dont know if the story gets worse) for a tv-series I've ever seen. And 'Max' is really cute...
As I saw on some webpages, in the US those scifi-series are way ahead. What's coming next? Any new good series?
Why dont we call it KIllustrate (I think Adobe wont be able to fight the term "Illustrate")...
I see some reason for a company to protect their brand and "they did not port any application" is no reason for us to break laws...
To make one thing clear. I am in the OSS-movement since 1992 and still do my best to enforce open source wherever I can. I think we should try to convince Adobe to leave killustrator to the kde-team or try to find a different name.
Btw. I offer 50 Euro to Kai if he is in need of the money.
Sony promised 17.000 PS2 in Austria for the launch-day, but only delivered about 3000. I preordered my ps2 about 2 months ago. At the shop, where I ordered, they had 40 preorders but only got 9 (!). So they put them on a pile and all the small kids who sliped through the barrier in front of the shop got them:( Too bad...
I was thinking if this could be some sort of (bad) advertising for the ps2 so that everybody who wants one tries to get it as soon as possible and that they are mentioned in the press... I'm really frustrated. This should not happen. Sony should put every ps2 they have in stock onto the market and not delever one or two a day that people keep coming back to the shops and leave frustrated. Im deliberating if I really need one of those bloody things... ------------------------------
First: I dont want to start any flamewars here. This is just an opinion...
What amazes me, is that the majority of the american population voted for Gore and he will (as it seems) not be president. I know, things can still turn around after recounting but it's quite funny that this can happen.
Can anybody tell me why america uses this "statesmen"-system? It seems to me that some states have more power compared to their population!? What is so special with these states?
Again, this is not meant to be a flame war. I dont know that kind of system and I'm just curious.
Here in Austria, legal regulations are quite good. You may, for example, copy a CD and give it to a friend of yours if you own the cd. You may also copy the cd if you lent it from a friend (I think you may only copy the cd from the original). The only point is that you dont distribute it (judges understand distributing as copying more than 9 times). That does also apply to software...
You also have AKG (something like RIAA) but it seems that they are more focused on live-events than on mp3.
The main reason, why napster is not very popular in university-network-administration is the bandwith it consumes.
I always wondered when it will be possible to read Slashdot via my new WAP-mobile. I could post my articles via SMS in about 15 - 30 parts (168 char's for sending SMS is not too much) starting with "WAPdot.org 1/15" to "WAPdot.org 15/15" and your nice servers will put it to gether like a puzzle. Who needs a preview anyway...
I'm a debian user for a long (3 or 4 years now) time.
First reason I chose Debian was that it was free
second was that the ftp-update was really easy and that when upgrading from one version to the next no full reinstall was needed
third was that it was superior from other distributions. Not in size but in the quality of the packages and the package-system (.deb)
I follow the discussion about KDE for quite some time now and I am disappointed and really sad about the way they treat this matter. But I couldnt do much about it (I accepted debians policy). But when I think now about the inconveniences that loosing the non-free section would mean, I start to think about other distributions I could use. I know hardly anybody would care what I do but I guess there are many out there who think the way I do.
I was always an advocate of the free-software movement but I'm getting angry about some that seem to see the matter (for me) too narrow-minded. I see the good things that the free-software movement has achieved - many free software packages that are only comercially sold for other OS's: so lets use them!!! Stop murmur around, use what we have already gotten and lets try to convince others to go that way too...
...although, I dont think it would be the reason for neither KDE nor Debian to solve this.
In my opinion, this is one of the darkest chapters of free software history. I'm a longterm debian-user and I remember the times where I looked at things like CDE with a glance and was even ready to pay for a nice desktop...
What I want to express with this statement is that setting a prize by Mr. Bechly does one good thing: it brings the problem into peoples minds again. I know all the previous discussions and I talked to some of the debian developers as well as with some of the kde-core-team. I understand both of their sides. But I think all developers on both sides should get going and bring that beautiful piece of software into the main-debian-dist right after gnome so that people could choose what they want to use and it is included with all debian-distros (which afaik just include the main-tree) and subdists like corelLinux, etc. This would also help other developers to include support not just for redhat and caldera when they write their qt-based-installers. This would help getting a lot more people from MS to Linux because of the conveniences installing new software.
I know, this could also be done with gnome-libs but at least here in Europe it seems that more users use KDE... (no flamewar please: gnome is nice as well). So PLEASE SOLVE THIS!!!! (and thank you Guenter)
IMHO it would be a good question what would happen if ebay spams a person in a country where spamming is illegal (by law)... Here in Austria/Europe, you must not receive spam-email without given permission. I guess there are even be fines for spammers.
Does anybody know if this is appliciable to US-companies too?
Cause some members of Metallica are Germans, I will post this message in german:
Hallo Metallica,
(english: hi metallica, although I know (as a musician) that illegal copies are a big problem for musicians and that they will deny you your wages, I think that you went too far with your actions. Think about your fans. This (napster) will creat your community... Dont you agree or is THIS "big bussiness"?)
Today's big problem of PCs is that every software you want to use (for ex. games) has to be installed onto your allways too limited harddrive. The advantage of a console is that you put in your CDROM/game-pack and get going (no installing necessary). Uninstalling is also not necessary - you can switch games whenever you want...
That was one of the big success-criterias of the old NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) and all the newer hardware. Easy to install/set up and worked for hours.
The only annoying thing was that on the PC more complex games came out. On the other hand you had to buy a new PC at least every 2 years to be able to play them (I had my SuperNES for 5 years and all new games still worked).
We'll see, how microsoft will work around that - maybe a processor-and-ram-and-all-the-rest-upgrade slot if they do an OS-update (what OS will this machine use anyway: Win2K or CE???). ------------------------------

Cedega (from Transgaming) is good for games and Crossoveroffice is good for office-apps. I hope they soon merge their code into wine.
