Bear in mind that a lot of phones get their own specialised outer casing compared to the standard version, so I doubt it would be much work to just make a small modification such as the socket.
It's not really the case on whether there is a system out there already, chances are there are plenty that could be likely candidates to explode in popularity; all it takes is the bandwagon to start.
I recently attended a quite interesting lecture by Toby Moore that talked about the 'Cool Curve', which essentially says that things just usually have to be there at the right time; there were plenty of better services than Twitter before Twitter existed, but people's comfort moved up a little bit which moved twitter into the cool curve.
The early consoles couldn't even take care of the available resolution. NES was 256x240. Not to mention the 16 colour limitation on NES. SNES then looked better with the same (NTSC) display, as did N64. They were all major improvements on their predecessor.
I don't think you can improve that much on the existing consoles, definitely not the leaps and bounds they had in the early days.
This also the case with the XBOX360 and PS3, if you have a quick search on google there only seems to be a handful of games that run at 1080p natively; most games are merely up scaled from lower resolutions.

Because websites suck, and you're better of accessing the data on the sites via a tool hand crafted for the screen size/ui of the device you're viewing it on.

And please don't give me that "You don't *have* to upgrade, you can just ramp down the settings on the latest games" argument. Yes that's true. But we all know that most self-respecting gamers *hate* to do that.
After admiring the new purdy graphics on most games for about 10 minutes, I usually go back and turn the graphics way down to make sure I have a steady FPS; I get so immersed in games after about 20 minutes of gameplay I don't notice whether or not my shadows are perfectly smooth around the edges.
As long as the graphics aren't absolutely terrible to the point where it's distracting, I'll be happy playing on the lower settings.
In fashion, women are required to constantly buy new clothes lest they be considered "frumpy". Last year's clothes are perfectly good, quality-wise, but a culture has been created by which anyone who wears them is subject to public ridicule.
This only applies to people that buy into fads of fashion, good clothes are timeless and will always look good no matter when you bought them; unless you bought them when you were a few sizes smaller that is.

An iPod touch lasts for ever, I have already seen hand me downs.
Well I don't know about that, my iPod classic is only about 3 years old and the battery lasts about 8 hours when it's not even playing music; this of course wouldn't be a problem if I could replace the battery.
I can't imagine something that has a much more advanced screen would fair any better than a simple music player.
I've got to admit, it's a pretty clever way of tricking people into going to a site; people rarely fall for the url shortening sites any more, but everyone trusts Google! (Except Slashdot of course, we don't like anyone).
It's important to note that the loss of profit may not be from the App store, but from the fact that people will have little reason to buy an iPhone if every app is available on every platform; Apple makes the majority of it's profit off hardware not software.
I'd imagine this screen-refresh issue would be solved if the rendering was done at home with your desktop PC and was then streamed to you sitting in your living room onto your tablet of choice. I've always wondered if it would be a cool idea to have a 'home server' that just ran dummy machines at the end to just completely run off the server, it'd mean you could use nearly any device and have all the same interface.
Mind you I'm currently in a flat with 5 people in it, so I'd imagine that's really the minimum you'd want this setup for (or if you had 5 people in total that are in the flat a lot).
I think what they're trying to get at is to remove all the rubbish that doesn't need to be in the game, and to a certain extent I agree.
A lot of my favourite games have been made fairly recently and are short but sweet, the two that stick out in my head being Braid and Portal.
Sure they're not 'simple' challenge wise, but they keep the aim of the game simple and to the point; not only that but they actually force you to change the way you think. I adore watching people play Braid and Portal just because you can see how they struggle until something finally clicks and they start thinking outside of the box.
Another thing to bear in mind is that the best sites get taken first.
Best does not always equal the most productive, best for them probably includes: ease of planning permission, speed at which they can be built, price at which they can be built; most companies are probably looking for the shortest payback period, not the highest output (they're not always the same thing).
I was led to believe they meant the same subset of symptoms but originated from different causes; Psychopaths being born with some sort of defect that lead them to their behaviour, while a Sociopath having the source from upbringing and post-birth conditioning.
Oh don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's very possible to do it; just that 99% of the time it'll be uninspired drivel that I certainly wouldn't want to play.
That is except for games where it's suitable, space environments or games like Eufloria are very suited towards that sort of procedurally derived content.
For some games randomly generated levels work, but for a lot of games it just means un-inspired bland levels most of the time.
It might work for some games like Mario; but even in the relatively simple genre of 2D scrollers there are some examples of where it wouldn't work, take Braid for example.

I have considered buying/building something like this for my bicycle, in case I die in an accident, but the battery/processor are still not there yet.
Why need an expansive battery when you have a viable source of power between your legs?
