    Perhaps an angst-ridden tean wouldn't like Elf, but the critics at RT did. Because they (usually) able to overlook a formulaic story IF the execution by the actors makes up for it. And though I hate a formulaic story as much as the next (smart) guy, I'll usually have a good time if the actors make up for it, and that's why I (usually) trust the reviews at RT. Plus they take so many reviews into account that little things cancel out.

    No, but by then you could ghost the harddrives to the old P4s you're going to have lying around. :) I would love to experiment with the AlphaServer we have sitting in the storage room (preacher), or fix the Sun Enterprise E250 whose processor fan broke (curtis). But why do that when we could just buy a $1000 Sun Fire V100?

    Instead I replaced my SPARCstation 20 (hamlin) with a PII-400 Dell server running Solaris 9 x86 (gobi). I'd love to run Linux but I still need more time to absorb the ins and outs of it.

    Damn I have been name dropping lots of things up there, these bong hits really get you fucked up. :-)

    ...and without a contract, I doubt the workers will be working very hard to fix the damage caused. I have multiple T-1 lines down all over Manhattan, most on UUNet/WorldCom. The word is Verizon has a couple CO's that are still out, and I hope they know what they're doin....

    listen, let's remember here people.. redhat was one of the first linux distrubtions, and they lost a lot of money & market share because they supported GNOME rather than the 6-12-months-ahead KDE project, all because they wanted a completely GPL'ed solution. They sued SCO first, so don't forget, they are in this on the politics side, not just for the money.

    Actually there are plenty of conditions in XP (even the latest fully patched version) that can cause a process to suddenly start hogging 100% of the CPU, such that even if you press CTRL+ALT+DEL, XP will take an absurdly long time to bring up TaskMan. Even if it does come up, it's iffy as to whether you'll be able to find the process that's causing the problem (either explorer, csrss.exe, or a lovely 'System' process that you can't kill).

    A lot of the new 'chrome' features in XP (as well as the horribly annoying preview features that don't allow you to delete files) can be the cause of it. But even under heavy load, linux always allows you to kill processes.

    please, before SP1 even came out I got the list of 25 "other" VLKs and the instructions for how to change from the FCKGW key to an unrestricted one. MS basically gave up after that anyway.

    they recognized long ago that it's better to have market saturation than a few more measly bucks, and now they have to keep doing it because of the 'threat' of open-source software. but that doesn't change the fact that i, like lots of people, are forced to run windows in certain places, but we like unix a whole lot better. :)

    No matter how many people living in the US hate George Bush, they don't hate him as much as the people in Baghdad hated Saddaam. If we were invaded tomorrow by another country, even if it was obvious they were going to win, the people in this country would not start tearing down the pictures of the President and stomping on them. They did that to Saddaam's pictures for a reason.

    I've seen Windows XP (yes, SP1) machines with a HT processor, and it sees the processor as "two". However, although MS did not want to patch Home Edition to support HT, they did change Pro to support 2 HT-enabled processors.

    The kernel people are making lots of innovations everywhere, improving performance for interactive desktops AND big multiprocessor servers. They may even have a run-time configurable scheduler in the next release! Since Solaris went from BSD to System V it's gained reliability but gone stagnant (now they're copying from the Linux guys, the /dev/random patch being one example). Linux 2.6 will kick ass and impress people.

    Mozilla or Phoenix are just plain better because they have and still are EVOLVING. There''s one reason MS hasn't added many new features to IE since 5.0... because they haven't had much competition since then, and they spend all their time now fixing security holes TWO TWO reasons MS hasn't added many new features to IE since 5.0... 1) because they think they're top shit, and 2) they're too busy cleaning up security holes, and of course they just don't give a shit THREE THREE reasons...

    while we might get a 'real' AI with a conventional program, it would have to be so incredibly huge that the interdependencies among the parts is what leads to the emergent behavior of intelligence. so we still wouldn't understand the source code anyway. and who KNOWS what gcc -O99 would do to it... :)

    By default even?!?! This slows down things A LOT compared to 16-bit color. Even 24-bit color is only necessary for artists and graphics designers. When you bring up or close the Start Menu it takes valuable time to redraw everything underneath.

    MS should be focusing on improving the desktop XPerience like Linux is with the work in 2.6 to improve interactivity.

    Dude that was LOL funny. Seriously, we have what we need from Sun on the high end -- two tricked-out four-CPU E450s and some E250's and Ultra 10's (and even some Ultra 2's) are great for us. Linux on cheap Dell blades is so easy and at least as reliable as the Sun boxes. The only new Sun boxes we'll be getting are Fire V100's (entry-level config of 256MB / 40GB IDE for $1000 with 550 MHz UltraSPARC II-e) and V120's.

    Oh, every time I press the UP key (and we have to run csh on all our Solaris servers for hysterical reasons) and get ~[[A instead of the last command I typed, I curse Solaris. Every time I have to apply a patchset I wonder if it will fuck up the kernel, yes Solaris is proven but it changes very slowly (if at all), whereas Linux is always quick to adopt superior technologies because the environment is open and competitive.

    What Linux lacks it will get in a very short time. I think people will really be impressed by the 2.6 kernel... what's so great about Solaris 10? (or 9 for that matter?)

    This quote, straight from the article, seems to scream FUD! to me:
    "Enterprises now realize that they are writing to a distribution, not to Linux in general. What works on Red Hat Advanced Server will not work on SuSE Linux," Schwartz said.

    What the hell? I don't we're there yet -- the distributions are NOT that different. Sun is very very divided on Linux, I just hope they get it together soon and figure out how to work with Linux because McNealy at least is right: a vote for Linux is a vote for Unix!

    Oh yes. I use it all the time. Only for the last few months all of a sudden whenever I run a GUI app as Administrator, the app can become unresponsive (ie, completely hosed) if I click outside of its window. Wonderful. :-(

    The first thought that came into my head was to just import the plain text into your favorite word processor (MS Word, AbiWord, OpenOffice, etc) and just select all and choose your favorite font! You can increase the point size and apply full justification as well.

    I thought like Homer, "Everybody is stupid except for me." but i'm drunk so i'm a little violent now.

    and i'm using windows... sigh. i have to install cygwin on my home pc... a simple bash prompt would calm me down so much... :-)

    Not anymore. with gcc 3.2.x you can make 64-bit executables for the UltraSPARC! not that anyone uses it... in fact, almost every executable (even intensive ones like gzip) distributed with Solaris is a 32-bit sparc executable... why doesn't Sun distribute a full 64-bit system?

    You can't. I have had to apply so many security patches in the last 125 days that I have had to reboot it at least once every 4 weeks.
