    For those who don't know, in U2's "Vertigo," Bono chants at the beginning of the song "uno dos tres quatorce (sp?)" which is "1 2 3 14 in spanish... strange.

    Actually, you can buy official U2 t-shirts with "1, 2, 3, 14" on them, so it's very much intentional. It's the number of albums they've done and although Vertigo is not the title track of the album, it was the first single to be released from it.

    Harrod's is not by any stretch of the imagination the UK's largest retailer. Nor is Dixons (which the article refers to) - they may be the largest consumer electronics retailer though.

    Harrod's is probably one of the largest shops in the world. I am sure there are warehouse shops all over which are bigger and Macy's may be too, but Harrods is most certainly the finest. It blows even the best department stores New York has to offer right out of the water.

    That's one good reason for pair programming, but it's far from the only one. Here are reasons I like promiscuous pair programming:

    * instant code review
    * instant design review
    * keeps me from making stupid mistakes
    * keeps me from gold-plating
    * I spend less time debugging
    * I know more about the system
    * handing off work is easier
    * code is more consistent throughout system
    * when we get tired, we notice and take breaks
    * improves truck factor massively

    And it therefore costs your employer twice as much. Good programming teams will pair up when the going gets tough and two sets of eyes are better than one.

    I really don't think pair programming is productive. When you are just churning out code there is no need for two people to look at the screen - one is enough and you can get things done quicker working seperately. Pair programming inhibits the JFDI approach, in my experience.

    I don't really code any more (not allowed to, I'm apparently too expensive!), but when I did and I ran into trouble I'd ask for help from a colleague - we would often spend hours pair programming until we it was sorted.

    I'm not sure if I've understodd you properly... apologies if not... The SIM is network dependant, and is usually the property of the network anyway. The SIM allows you to change handsets by swapping the SIM, but not networks... so this is not number portability in the sense the article speaks about.

    However, you can often change networks without changing handsets as long as the GSM handset is compatible with the new network (dual-band, CPHS etc)

    When you change networks in the UK, you usually suffer about 4-6 hours of downtime when your number is in transit.

    Changing the IMEI number (GSM serial number, basically) is illegal, however because this is what the CEIR blocklist for stolen phones it based upon. You can see your IMEI on a GSM handset by ptying *#06#

    However, if this original check is just done by some network secutiry checking (ie. looking to see if there is a vulnerable version of SSH or a misconfigured IIS etc) then all that would needed to be done would be to fix the potential exploit rather than install a piece of client software.

    Potentially, this would just be like running nmap and other similar tools against the machine in question to test it out fot net-worthiness.
