Ok. I follow the MER Mission like an addict and I was really curious how that color issue would turn up, I never believed the conspiracy folks for a second but couldn't think of an answer either. Now that I "tried" to read this article I am quite sure they never landed on Mars. The best way to turn the average joe away from asking nasty questions is getting into boooooring detail. Good job Nasa...
I mean, even if I am a Linux zealot, it is widely known that monocultures are most vulnerable to viruses. This sheme applies in software.
With something open like Linux it would be much harder to get in that kind of trouble. And if not that, then Microsoft has to reform itself with Linux as a counterpart.
Look, there still is a catholic church, even now that Luther is a few hundred years dead. But still he made a difference. The catholics pope had to make a change if he wanted his church to survive, and so he did.
With something as radical as opensource software as a competitor it is hard for Microsoft to stick with it's sloppy security. They are getting better even now.
I bet they will improve even more. And even if not, the plain fact that there are Linuxbased machines around wich might be not as vulnerable (even if it was just because they are not such a widespread target) means that there will be some systems up.
I guess that's why it s important that there is choice in software, even Apple or Win98/3.11 is an option here.
Of course in the case of a true perfect storm scenario this wouldn't apply but the pure existence of something different than Microsoft would help to make it harder for any Pearl Harbour scenario to happen.
Actually I ha the exact opposite results. Once I was stuck during a two week nonstop coding session and when I fell asleep I dreamed about my code. Then I suddenly had the solution. When I woke up I implemented it at 4am and the program finally worked. Well, it was Basic on a C64 and the program was a game of life implemention but still, I was shocked how my brain knew what to do when my conciousness let go. It was an amazing expierence...
Its not only ugly it s also looking lame. And for such an expensive machine my shiny Sun better look cool. I don t get it. Sun had some pretty nice designs but this looks even worse than many stock Intelboxes from walmart...
It was the ONLY present that could stand before me back in the early eighties. And it was fine. Whenever someone wanted to give little Marcus something for Xmas it was enough to grab a pack of generic Legos. I had a ton of it at home. In a weak moment during my teen years I sold all of it for 100!! One of my greatest mistakes. Heck, my kids would have still been able to use it thanks to Legos legendary downwards compatiblity...;-/
That's actually an interesting point. There is a german hiphop band called "Die fantastischen Vier" wich use excessive samples from StarWars IV: "A new hope" on their first album ("Jetzt geht's ab") from 1988. If they recorded the album today they would have to pay a huge amount of money to George Lucas. It really isn't easy to determine where exactly an original work of art begins. After all we are all standing on the shoulders of giants (see also SCOs-Copyright trouble).
Personally I feel that while things get more and more restrictive less of original ideas arise (same with TV shows, Movies, and so on...). Or is this just me gettnig old?;-)
Might be because of that quote from the headline "Someone important must have gotten an Aibo". But then again maybe you didnt even read the headline.;-)
Whats best about them is they dont have to "an internal combustion engine on its back". They eat whatever the landscape supplies. But I guess its too simple.
Well, this probably depends on how familiar with PCs you are. I am not an Imagemanipulation-guru myself but I had no trouble getting my work done (some webgraphics, Digicam-Manipulation and so on) with either Adobe Photoshop or Gimp.
They actually look a bit different but follow the same basic concept. The "tools" you get are mostly the same, their location and symbols may differ and the holy war about wether the windows are "docked" inside a framewindows or free floating is mostly a question of taste.
Therefore if you are quite at home with a modern dekstop PC you will soon feel comfortably with both systems.
So, to answer your question I would say that Gimp is easier for newbies and pretty hard for Photoshop-hardliners who have become very used to Photoshop and all its quirks.
Have you ever seen a Graphicdesigner use Photoshop on a Mac? Honestly its impressive (for me at least). They move thru the menus like a sleepwalker. Of course they would have a hard time to learn something new.
My hint: If youre a cheap (like me) with a decent knowledge of modern GUIs get TheGimp and see if it suits you. I like it and use it for all my picture edit needs!
Errr..I can run Maestro on my Linuxmachine here but it sucks up all of my 256MB of RAM. Is this normal? The system gets terribly slow. How much does it need to run smoothly?
Just that second they made a zoom on one of the desktops at the conrtrolroom and it showed not only the Maestro controlprogram but also nearly definetly a GNOME 1.4 Desktop complete with the panel and a Mozilla link inside it. Sadly I couldn't take a screenshot. Still I am quite sure they are using Gnome1.4.
I hope for them that Maestro is run on a dedicated server since it sucks up a huge lot of memory, at least on my box. Java, after all!;-)
I was following the Nasa TV broadcast from Germany, meaning I had to get up at 5am. My girlfriend called me nuts. But I don't regret a single second. The six minutes landing phase was more stunning than any movie could ever be. I smoked chains when the signal disappeared. But now that I see the images I must say "Good work, Nasa!"
I am eagerly looking forward to the landing of Opportunity and the rover mission. Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for ESAs Beagle2. Chances are we can pick up a signal these days using Mars Express Orbiter!
The landing sequence for the MERs seemed quite complex and I was wondering if they were overdoing it! But I am deeply impressed now. Ever since I was a little boy I was dreaming about a real Rover on Mars and now I get two (hopefully). This is better than xmas! Thank you, Nasa! You rock!;-))))
You are so right. I use filesharing mostly for digging for older stuff and collectors live bootlegs. everything is better than what's on MTV. How many tits and Porsches does it take to cover the lack of talent? I haven't bought a CD in store now for quite some time. I rather pick something after a great liveshow directly from the artist if I can get vinyl even better.;-)

Now not everybody just hates you.
Finally everyone also laughs at you.
I hope the money is worth all that.

Sorry, I had to.

Mini-ITX boards can't handle Intel CPUs. They are designed for VIAs own EDEN CPU.
Not sure if this could be the reason but the MER-A pictures aren't taken at a specific time but rather during a whole day.
That means that the colors you see on the sundial don't match all frames of the final picture you get.
NASA therefore alters the colors to match the pictures as closely as possible. Maybe this disturbs the color? Not sure though. What do you think?
thanx ;-)

QT is for QTers, so? ;-)
Lol. It was a long wait til the rovers arrived, mind you! ;-)

Well, the root password part is nasty but what kind of porn image exactly is it? ;-)
Those pics are supposed to be highres? Come on! ;-)
SLIGHTLY offtopic? *lol* ;.-)
Living on the edge, huh? Lcuky you. But trust me, if the first HD fails on you you will understand his point.
