You should definetly go for it. I have so much fun with it and the best thing is you get all the latest software in neat i586-packages installed on your box without the hassle of searching for a slack-tgz.
Hey, they could try to start an opensource company. My little office over here in germany is well back on it's feet after my services started to be more and more OpenSource related. It is also really fun, now. I must admit that whenever people asked me what I do and I had to answer:"I'm in Computers!" it sounded kind of lame. But now I can say: "I'm running a Linux company!" Might sound stupid but I feel proud that I can make a living from OpenSource software without going to court...
My ISP just informed me yesterday that my conn will be down during Feb 1st. Damn, I was going to install da dedicated win2k-server to participate on the DOS. Looks like I will be missing this one;-/
alright. No Sun bashing intended but somehow I just dont get why the JDS is perceived as such a revolutionary thing. Itsnice and all but I guess there isnt much what I cant do with a stock Slack9.1 and Dropline-Gnome, or name your favourite Distro (Debian, Mandrake or even Xandros etc.) I really dont get why its such a big thing. Just because its SUN and they signed a deal with Walmart? Come on. I personally dont even like the implementation too much. Many different Widgetsets, a substandard OpenOffice.org finish (the ximianized version is MUCH smoother), and not even a chance to run KDE apps out of the box, or a decent enduser autoupdate system, such as RedCarpet. Is this really such a big jump forward compared to other distros?
1. As for Hardware, most hardware is very easy to install by now. For example to switch a NVidia Graphicscard just take out your old one and insert your new model. Done. Same with most CD-Burners, USB-Sticks, Keyboards, Digicams, and so on. Of course this depends on your own configuration a bit but you get the idea. I woulndt say its much harder than WinXP in this segment, though.
2. In the unlikely event that a distribution like SuSE or Debian does not contain the piece of software out of box you are looking for you can still grab a nice rpm or deb and run with it. I use Slackware with swaret and Dropline-Gnome and I always receive the latest software automatically. It is MUCH easier than keeping track with Windows. If I really need a package I can use Slacks easy package installer. No Problem here.
Conclusion: Both issues are well adressed by now but since Linux is different from Windows there are some users who "feel" that it is harder, while it is not necesserly.
Actually it's impressive how much effort it takes to strip down a Linux Desktop to the lack of features Windows supplies. Just look how they castrated the calculator...

Hey, actually they don't have to fly lower. They are alrady looking for signs of the airbags since the resolution of the cam is very high and they should be able to detect it. But, they don't know where exactly the beagle landed and therefore this could take some time. Still, there is a chance that beagle2 can be found on January 24th. The device (if still in one piece;-) switches into emergency mode from this date on and Mars Express could have a chance of picking up a signal. Well, I don't think it will, but there is a chance. Theoretically.;-)
Yes, it was supposed to be funny. First it got modded "Interesting" wich was rather confusing to me and now it's a Troll. Actually it was neither. Well, nevermind! Hey! At least someone got it!;-)
Does anyone know when "The Moon Landing Special Edition" will be out on DVD? I haven't seen it back when it was first on TV and I would love to see this true classic spiced up with state-of-the-art CGI in Dolby Surround. Or did they abandon the plans on the Rerelease since Kubrik's dead and all? Spielberg finished A.I., maybe he would be up to the task...;-)
How dare they calling me angry?
yes, now I remember THAT was the quote i wanted to post...
hehe, or Mars Rover?
Can anybody think about the screenshots? ;-)
It's not that the competition looks that much better...

but the ping rates were pretty bad. ;-)

Maybe "THAT sounds ok!!" was intended...
Or gets Zip-bombed and slows down to a halt.

If there is one lesson I learned from reading Slahdot the last 5 years it is that I'd never say never to anything remotley related to technology.

It truly is...hehe..,-)
Ok. Mailing Pat when Im in trouble might NOT be an option in a more than 2000 Desktops network. I see your point! ;-)

Hey, but..but...it was Christmas! How could they possibly deliver? ;-)
A press-release? From SCO? You m-u-s-t be kidding me...
At least in Germany!

His name is Mike Rowe and he owns
www.mikerowesoft.com.
That's enough to call MS's lawyers into his backyard.
They offered him 10 canadian Dollars for his domain. He was not amused.
Get it now?
