"Free speech? I do not see them slapping fines on people for unsolicited snail mail. And trust me, you can get a lot of that crap and getting addresses is really damn easy. Also, the article isn't clear about the Utah law. It could be using those nice, vague terms that make the law unenforceable and could even target e-mail that was solicited. Remember, people sometimes identify items as spam that really are not."
Its a form for banning explicit mail. However nothing says it has to be porn, so it works against every mailing firm. And they don't want to have the postal service after them - some of those laws have serious teeth.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the old C64 - had to sneak up and knife the guard from behind then drag him to the closet. Didn't want the other guards sounding the alarm
Read a little closer. You can publish a fax number with a notation to the effect of "This number does not accept fax advertisements" (I'm not going to go back and reread that entire document again)
So if you have a web site, list a fax and post that you don't accept junk fax, you should still be able to sue. Or if you list a fax # when you register a domain. The spammers will pick it up, but you can nail them because that isn't a public list, it is strictly to contact you re an issue with your domain.
BTW probably the single worst fax spammer out there is fax.com - they are relentless and ignore don't spam me orders.
I was under the impression that claiming common carrier status was how isps avoided being responsible for filtering out p2p etc. That they allow everything, and can't possible filter out illegal stuff due to the volume of material flowing through their pipes.
Or do I just have the wrong name for the same principle?
At one point do they jeopardize their common carrier status? If they're going to filter for voip, they're taking an active role managing their content. Thats just BEGGING uncle sam to come in there and force them to filter kiddy porn and anything else. I'm not sure the cable/phone companies really want to open that can of worms.
I didn't say consumer stuff would survive. Professional boxes which legitimately need to perform that kind of change will still exist. Cost will keep them out of the hands of too many people. However a professional pirate firm will certainly be able to justify and recoup the costs of paying a few thousand dollars for such a converter.
Besides if the key revocation is used the whole system ends up in the courts when someone with a legitimate item stops working. While mpaa/riaa can keep enough politicians bought, judges are a little tougher to either buy or replace. IF its ever used, it will be done so with extreme care lest a court come down on the side of the user against the mpaa.
I'm quite confident I can buy a good piece of professional gear and bypass the bs. I'm not going out and buying another hdtv because some corrupt hollywood ahole doesn't want their system to work with component video.
Then there is the game system issue. For example, the xbox 360 is certainly going to offer one form or both of an external hd disc player. The HD output from the xbox 360 is component. I suspect microsoft is going to make sure its customers can use the system to watch hd discs - they certainly wouldn't want to give the ps3 and extra boost.
This stuff already exists, legally. Professional video equipment isn't subject to this bs. Remember the little $10 boxes that defeated macrovision but can't be sold anymore? They're just a simple time base corrector. Used for all sorts of things in tv stations and production houses. Think the jack-boots at the mpaa are going to tell those people they can't used necessary professional equipment because some consumer could use them to violate copyright laws (or exercise fair use)?
The only problem is the cost - professional equipment is very versitile and as such more costly. But if some astute marketing people figured out to make a cheap version with very simple functionality and let word of mouth advertising take care of things...
Vic 20 too. Paid for it with my newspaper money. Now I've REALLY dated myself - do they even let kids deliver newspapers anymore? $299 if I remember right. The c64 had just come out and was like $599.
Expand on this a little bit - if the CEO had to personally call back everyone - better to use his very high $$$$$ time than a bunch of minimum wage drones. That would sting far more.
ALL cars have an automatic choke - its all the other cars on the road, or more specifically, the other drivers create the automatic urge to choke someone...
I just set up an amex merchant account - of course the paperwork isn't here with me right now. I believe the rate was 3.5% compared to appx 2% for mc/visa. On $1k purchases that starts to add up. However its a competitive advantage for me since most of my competitors don't take it.
The other big difference is how payment is handled. With visa/mc, the money goes into your account quickly - within a couple of days. With amex, the money doesn't go into your account until the customer pays his bill. So if there is a dispute, amex doesn't have to do a chargeback as they have never handed out any cash, whereas visa/mc have to do a chargeback and do more work to do so.
Well the unlimited budget is gone too. AT&T in the day basically threw money at Phds. Minor things like the transistor came from Bell labs. The loss of Bell labs alone was the best reason NOT to break the monopoly. AT&T charged high rates and did some other nasty things, but things got fixed. Crews were there 24x7 to fix things NOW.
Its a trade-off, but I still think the country would have been better off with a regulated monopoly service and the r&d of Bell labs vs the way things went. You'd think with competition you'd have decent customer service, but obviously that is not the case.
I strongly disagree. There is PLENTY of money spent on education. The problem is too much is diverted to deadbeat administrators. Part of the reason private schools offer better education for the dollar is the lack of adminstrators. I went to a catholic high school, and all the adminstrative issues were handled by the principal and vice pricipal with the help of ONE secretary. And then one person at the dioseses (sp?) to handle the 5 or 6 schools in the church system.
The public high school I attended prior to that had principal, vice principal, each of whom had a personal secretary, plus 7 more paper pushers in the front office alone. THEN there were the 20-30 additional useless paper pushers for the school district (3 high schools, 2 middle schools, 6 elementary schools)
Unfortunately the teachers union represents both teachers and administrators. These two groups need to be split up so the real issues can be addressed. As long as administration continues to hijack the interests of the educators for its own selfish interests, it will be impossible to properly fund the public school system.
I just emailed them a picture of some south african getting necklaced. No replies, comments or anything - the spams just stopped. I guess they got the hint.
for those not knowing, it is an invitation to have carnal relations with your mother. It is taken VERY offensively - ie if you want a fight just say that to someone.
None of the above percentages are relevant - the bottom line is the government is spending MORE than it is taking in. The ongoing spending binge is going to catch up sooner or later.
Unfortunately until there are harsh consequences directly to the politicians that overspend, there is no forseeable end to this practice.
arghhh
where is that quote from? I know it, and its driving me nuts because I can't remember from where.
thanks

At the risk of being OT, I'd opt for M.U.L.E.

I don't think the creation of "reality" tv is something anyone should be proud of.
I'm happy to disavow any knoweldge of or claim any credit for the horrific crap that is reality tv

just my opinion - flame away

Well, Sir Winston Churchill said it best:
"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other kinds."
(yes I realize the US is a republic and not a democracy)
"How many U.S. spammers have been rubbed out lately?"
NOT ENOUGH
I'd love to be a fly on the wall in Alan Ralsky's place when he hears about this, along with the other major spammers.
Too bad its illegal to solve spam that way in the US.
Yub tvi mut?

Thanks. That is truly a HORRIFIC thought :(
