  1. Delete user data before Canceling account on Monster.com Data Stolen, Won't Email Users · · Score: 1
To those who are canceling their Monster accounts as I did just a short time ago, before I canceled my account, I " updated " my user info by blanking, ( highlight, then delete ), all of the fields with my name, address, etc. I was surprised that it let me do this, but it did. The only thing I couldn't just blank out was my email address. ( of course ). You can change, it, but you can't blank it out.
After I hit the "save" button at the bottom of the 'update user info' page, I then deleted the account.
Hopefully, this allowed me to actually nullify my info in their database when I made my changes and "saved" those changes, before canceling the account.

Granted, it may be too late for this round of Monster data breaches.
But I'll hope that in using this method, they shouldn't have my info in their database for the next round of user info loss that will likely follow.
They seem to invite these problems unto themselves.

Thank goodness that the password I'd used for the site was a one time password that I'd only used at a few other junk sites, and the email address was one I use for spam watching.
( I'd been registered with Monster for years, but had never taken the time to 'upgrade' the email and password on that site to the more trusted ones that I use for proven sites, especially after last years breach there ).

Now, I just have to try to convince the local newspaper to use someone other than Monster for their online job postings.

That's the way I do it.. I'd Never use autopay. I just could not do it. But I do not pay by check either. I pay online, manually, at each utilities website every month. I balance my "checkbook" ( MS Money ) every week with my bank statement that I pull up online. I go down the list of transactions in my banks statement online, and check them off as cleared in my money program one at a time. Anything left over gets investigated. As I am paying my bills, I am able to check and compare how much I am being charged vs how much of the service I've used each month. For instance, it's neat to go to my electric companies website, log in, click Pay My Bill, pay using my debit card in a few clicks, save the receipt and confirmation numbers in special folders on my hard drive, ( which are automatically copied to a different hard drive, and I back up both hard drives weekly ), enter the payment in my Money program, and while still at the electric companies website, I can compare how much electricity I've used the last month, compared to the months before, and the same month one year before, and compared to the average usage on my street, in my neighborhood, and in my city. Same with the gas payment for heat and hot water. I'm able to watch how much I'm being charged per liter of natural gas, per gallon of water, per Kilowatt of electricity. And I'm able to track my expenses through my money program, which will also predict, forecast, and schedule the monthly payments I'll be making in the future. So I know how much I used, how much it cost me, whether the cost is trending up or down ( useful for when I add a electric heater to a bedroom, or to see how much I watered the lawn, as well as how much each unit of whatever is costing me ). And I can prepare for future costs with the trending reports on the utilities websites as well as my Money program. It's quick, easy, and saves me from ever having to purchase checks from the bank, nor am I using paper checks and envelopes, which is good for the environment. And I rarely ever have to buy stamps. ( Although Christmas Cards are one of those times of year when I do have to buy a few books of stamps :) Faster, environmentally friendlier, instant and comparable results, a firm grip on my expenses and where my money goes, a visual reality check every week, and it's all free. Plus, if I need to argue any payment, I can do so through the Visa check-card I use through my bank. Each transaction gives me a electronic receipt AND a confirmation number instantly on the webpage as well as by email. I like having the complete amount of total control and information I get by paying my bills this way. btw, I haven't bounced a check in many years using this method. I don't think one can bounce a check this way.. since I'm not using checks, and don't have that "float" time that so many people come to depend on and get into trouble with. The way I pay my bills with my bankcard, if the money is not in the account, then the bill has to wait a week. Once the money hits the account, I can make the payment instantly. Easy as pie. I can also tell you my exact account balance with just a glance of the money program, as well as how much will be in there this time next week, or next month. I couldn't imagine paying my bills any other way now. Give it a try. :)

It's not that they ever hope to be cheaper than pencils, papers, OR books.. but they can offer a whole lot more to people who have few other similar alternatives.

From the olpc website at laptop.org
    specifically - http://laptop.org/en/laptop/hardware/features.shtml

Design factor was a priority from the start: the laptop could not be big, heavy, fragile, ugly, dangerous, or dull. Another imperative was visual distinction. In part, the goal is to strongly appeal to XO's intended users, but the machine's distinctive appearance is also meant to discourage gray-market traffic. There is no mistaking what it is and for whom it is intended.

XO is about the size of a textbook and lighter than a lunchbox. Thanks to its flexible design and "transformer" hinge, the laptop easily assumes any of several configurations: standard laptop use, e-book reading, and gaming.

The laptop has rounded edges. The integrated handle is kid-sized, as is the sealed, rubber-membrane keyboard. The novel, dual-mode, extra-wide touchpad supports pointing, as well as drawing and writing.

XO is fully compliant with the European Union's RoHS Directive. It contains no hazardous materials. Its LiFePO4 or NiMH batteries contain no toxic heavy metals, plus it features enhanced battery management for an extended recharge-cycle lifetime. It will also tolerate alternate power-charging sources, such as car batteries. Children may also have a second battery for group charging at school while they are using their laptop in class.

Experience shows that laptop components most likely to fail are the hard drive and internal connectors. Therefore, XO has no hard drive to crash and only two internal cables. For added robustness, the machine's plastic walls are 2mm thick, as opposed to the standard 1.3mm. Its wireless antennas, which far outperform the typical laptop, double as external covers for the USB ports, which are protected internally as well. The display is also cushioned by internal "bumpers."

The estimated product lifetime is at least five years. To help ensure such durability, the machines are being subjected to factory testing to destruction, as well as field testing by children.

On the point made in the article about ponds drying up, this has never quite made sense to me. If the climate is warming, would that not imply more moisture in the atmosphere and thus more rain, or at least less evaporation?

Think about the last part of your sentence.

Where do you think the more moisture in the atmosphere comes from? More evaporation. Ponds have very little quantities of water, which are easier to run dry than say.... cold oceans in the arctic.

Now imagine that the ponds run dry and that moisture that goes to the atmosphere ends up in the Pacific Ocean. Also, remember that there are zones in the planet where rain occurs very rarely. Unfortunately, evaporation occurs on a daily basis, especially when the sun shines.

Also, climate change models suggest that areas of precipitation will be changing as warming accelerates. Areas that now get little rain may get much more rain, areas that how get plenty of rain may get much less. Think Atlanta, Georgia in the last few years.

Hope that's enough for you. As for the rest. I assume that since you are reading this that you know about the food chain. How every little ecosystem is somehow tied into every other ecosystem. How the loss of one species or habitat affects other species and habitats. When all the whales and seals and bears and tigers are gone, and your grand-children don't even know what a zoo is, and they can only imagine a beautiful, magnificent world inhabited by such creatures, will you feel vindicated ? When all that is left in this world are safe zones and un-inhabitable zones, and a very few spots that still have decent drinking water, though not enough to bathe in, because the men before them kept on polluting the land and water and let the animals die off because they did not care. Will you feel good about this then ? Each species on the earth has a purpose. Take Bees. Most folks would love to live on without them. But right now scientists and farmers nationwide are very worried about the sudden drop and die off of bees in America. Seems that bees are necessary to pollinate the foods we eat, like corn. And when all the cows and pigs die off, and the fish are all poisoned, I reckon we'll need plenty of corn. So millions of dollars and teams of specialists are now having to be put into a huge effort to determine why the bees are all dying. So now you have mankind, and bees. Do you need more ?
