The larger concern, at least to me, is that the government will buy the at risk paper and one of two things will happen:

1.) Those with the at risk mortgages realize that there is no way the congress wants to accept the negative press associated with them actually foreclosing on properties in serious default and continue missing monthly payments.

Or 2.) The market recovering and congress using the return on their investment to grow government even more, becoming even more intrusive in areas which do not concern them.

1.) Causes economic collapse and triggers a global depression. 2.) Would have a positive impact in the short term but the larger size of government could not be sustained causing the budget problems we see now to be compounded many times over.

Of course there is always a small chance that they buy the paper, tighten their belts and balance the budget in the short term, recoup their investment and then some, and use that windfall to pay down the ballooning national debt. Kinda like the chances of a spontaneous rectal-simian ballistic ejection.

Disclaimer-I am not a developer, I am a CAD designer.

My experience getting into my field took a little sidepath as well. I am currently working as a designer, but my last job was as a *cringe* firedog. But when I began shopping myself around after graduation I barely mentioned my time there. Honestly it had no bearing on the jobs I was applying for outside the 'yep this guy understands computers' checkbox. The only reason I stayed there as long as I did was that I was very choosy about the kind of company I wanted to work for. What got me the phone calls with offers rather than letters of condolences was my 7 years as a tour guide. Again the job had no bearring on my actual career, but I did develop excellent people skills. These translated remarkably well into the interview.

Frankly my point is unless you have resume experience as long as your arm, companies will only hire people they like. Present yourself in a polite, responsible manner. Treat the interviewer and their personal space with the upmost of respect. And above all do whatever you have to (short of tequila breath) to not be nervous. Confidence is key. Not arrogance, confidence. Practice your answers to the questions you know will be asked. If need be, be a little dismissive of your time in tech support. Explain that while you genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to help people, your ultimate goal was a position similar to the one you're applying for. And remember still to be yourself, turnover rates for employees that are completely different than their interview personas tend to be above the norm.

Okay I made that last part up, but it sure sounds true!

You're a little off the mark.

The problem here isn't strictly a hardware limitation, its mainly a problem interpretting the data. Get a few of these built and test a couple of pure samples, use these readings to create your database. Increasing in complexity as you go.

The light analyzing sensor would be the biggest hardware limitation I see. I don't imagine current spectroscopy technology will suffice (I could be wrong, God knows its happened before). The real trick will be in differentiating the materials and compounds layered on a surface. I.E. if they test your keyboard will they be able to determine the plastic, the screening for the letters, the skin oil deposits, and that mysterious 'organic compound'? Its a neat idea for a sampling method, seems we're only a few generations of light sensors and material DBs away from our tricorders.

If by stronger democracy you mean stronger liberal/socialist government, then yes, absolutely. Paying someone to perform a civic responsibility makes them into an employee. It would not take long before political parties started raising these 'vote stimulii' amounts would likely gain the favor of the majority. How would we pay for it? Why lets tax the corporations some more! They're evil! Whats that? The economy is stagnating? The government needs to step in and do something. Maintain control! Well why not let them just take over the industries altogether, they already control the financial sector.

That being said, I still stick by my original statement. It is not meant to be taken as A~=B<=C, but as A/C~=B/C where C equals infinity. I'm not saying that the research is pointless, but if the universe is neverending, then so too must be that research. Is that more philosophical than scientific? Probably, but I work with the tools I have. While I may not have the necessary education to glean the deepest meaning from the research, all it takes is conscious thought to consider the balance of hubris and humility.

But hey, if I really knew what I was talking about it would be my papers being discussed. I'll be content with my comments (however ignorant or erroneous they may be) sparking some lively discourse.
