The sad part about this, is it's just another case of the public getting screwed by the government. Guess what... Telstra used to be a national asset. We already HAD a "National Broadband Network" using the technology of the time. But then the government decided that wholly owned communications network wasn't something the Australia public needed, so they sold it off (and then lost the election). So now the public has to pay to get back what we already had...
And politicians wonder why they are universally hated.
Has anyone here taken in the fact that 3.3.1 only applies to iPhone OS4, and that perhaps it actually has a technical reason for existence?
*looks around* Oh... this is slashdot. *face palm*
Ok. Have you ever seen an OSX crash log from a Flash app? It's basically one big block of barf. Ever tried to sample a Flash app?..Barf.. Now compare that to the crash log of an Obj-C app. In those logs I can look through each individual thread and see which thread was doing what, when and why.
So, what's new in iPhone 4, (that didn't exist in iPhone 3) that would require such an ability? MULTI-TASKING! (Or at least what Apple calls multitasking)
If the system can't peek at what an app is doing, it can't make educated guesses as to what can be paused/resumed/killed at the thread level.
But hey, don't let the simple answer get in the way of a good flamewar.
You do realise that many of those cross-platform environments just create a Obj-C wrapper around their own libraries right? The CS5 Flash iPhone Exporter just wraps your code and the flash runtime in Obj-C.
Correction, you can choose any ATI Card or Nvidia card that has XP drivers written for it.
Likewise, you can choose any ATI card or Nvidia card that has Mac OS X driver written for it. There is an important distinction that you cleverly avoided.
Is it fair that a company with a server that has a single processor serving 100 users pays the same as a company that has a server with an 8-way processor serving 1000 users.
Is it fair that a large company pays an artificially inflated price to use the software?
3. No faster than light travel. So long galactic civilization.
This really annoys me. People who say it's impossible to travel faster than light (as a blanket statement) are the modern equivalent of those who said the earth was flat. Those people also said that cars could not travel more than 50 miles per hour, because all the air would be sucked out and the occupants would suffocate.
While I can't prove that it is possible, you can't prove that it's impossible either. So lets just say that given TODAYS TECHNOLOGY, galactic civilisations would not be possible.
Airport Base Stations use (or at least they used to use) a 486.
iPod probably has (or will have) some sort of ARM chip in it.
The XNU Kernel has the ability to assign certain types of tasks to certain types of CPU. There is no reason why a Mac could not use both a PPC and an x86 in the same box.
Intel make kick-arse network chips.
Who said anything about these going into a Mac? (New product?)
I love it how MS always leaves out the important bits.
Microsoft uses Akamai to serve the majority of their content. So while the html may be coming from MS, everything else comes from Akamai. Akamai use their own linux-based platform to run their servers. A simple traceroute to i.microsoft.com ends up (for me) at 203-59-140-12.deploy.akamaitechnologies.net
Then again... why let the facts get in the way of good marketing.
Actually fights and by definition, pain, is one of the only things the body responds to at a genetic level.
If you do something which causes a "please don't do that again" response, your brain will register that the outcome was not that unpleasant and you will be more inclined to do that something again.
If you do something which causes a "just got the shit beaten out of you" response, your brain will register that the outcome was life-threatening and subconsciously prevent you from doing it again.
This is why a lion will belt or even bite her cub when the little one chews on moms tail too hard. It's natures way. Don't think you know better, because you don't.
DISCLAIMER: Yes there are a few exceptions to the rule and I am in no way condoning violence of any sort.
...and because society at large believes that, the law upholds that view.
Actually the law is there to deter one person from attacking another whom does not wish to be attacked. It's just that in the heat of the moment it is safer to stop everything than it is to try and work out if both parties really want to fight.
It's interesting to note that if you try to visit Slashdot on 443, it immediately redirects you to 80...
I wonder what would happen if an employee remotely wiped a company server because it had some of his private and confidential information on it...
Are you all serious?
How long did Mac users have to wait to get a version of BBC iPlayer that even remotely came close to working?
BBC finally shows Apple some love after years of neglect, and they get pounded.
This is EXACTLY what governments should be doing in hard times. Get the money flowing to places it hasn't gone before.

Isn't it more of a case that someone has found a bug, and now it's over to Apple to fix it?
Or is that just applying far to much logic to an Apple related topic...
Umm... the customer already PAID for the bandwidth required to receive your app. They pay for that every month!
Google uses that 30% to pay for the bandwidth required to get the bits TO Optus.
Hey i'm not fat, i'm just big boned. (And in my 20's!)
Which is where in Indies should really be pushing...
"Here Apple, have our entire catalogue for world wide distribution."
That has to make everyone happy.
...has more info about the expensive version.

Oh for Smeg sake...
The one-button mouse is not for the benefit of the users. It's to force developers to actually use their brains when building an interface.
If you only have one button, then you can't go hiding features under contextual menus...

Wow, spoken like a true innovator. You must work for Microsoft.
So how's that new wheel you are working on coming along?
That's a great idea! So you have told Apple about it right?
/. for suggestions.

You might like the Solid Wall Of Unity approach but give me chaos any day.
Mr Morden would be proud of you.

Kudos to MS.
This is true. The money does come from the Advertisers.
However, on commercial television you can't have one without the other.

They already do, only you have to rent them by the hour.
This thread has gone off on a bad taligent. Please stop it now.
