    Put apache on it. Try to get a contract based on bandwidth used. Configure it to accept connections only when you have the situations when you need it. Have robots.txt turned on to help keep away bots. Make your primary site issue redirects to the ISP apache box when usage gets too high.

    No its not. If they use AIM, then they can use the AOL gateway. The AOL gateway product can do also do their own authentication and force AIM clients (based on AIM handle) to use the gateway. The gateway can do all the needed logging. A strict IT policy to be followed by employees makes this task trivial.

    You should have a magnetic student id. So you should have card readers somehow available (like dorms?) So ... use the ID and PIN number to keep people out. That way the card and PIN needs compromised to gain access. When students don't need access anymore, remove the card from the list of people who have access.

    Not sure how hard this is to implement but probably not that expensive and for a schools with engineers - a nice project to try.

    I fail to see how this is flamebait. People are posting spammer information and taking vigilante action.

    The Nuremberg files did the same thing. In this case, no one feels for the spammers. But if any prosecution does go foward - the Nuremberg case will be used as a precedent.

    But I do have to pay the garbage man based on the amount of garbage I throw away. More garbage==more money I must spend.

    I enjoy this payment scheme since it encourages recycling and more thought on how much stuff we do consume. I hate it because I pay for all the junk mail. That's why I like credit card companies which provide a postage paid envelope so I can send their offerings back to them.

    Just because I leave the keys in my car by accident doesn't give you the right to borrow my car. The owner left it open because they probably didn't know better. Ignorance is not a good excuse but its NOT a reason to be stolen from.

    Except for Sports and Movies, is there content which you need to have HDTV?

    For sports - I care about the game quality - not the picture or sound quality.

    Where's the content where I NEED to have HDTV? Its just like color vs black and white. Even until the 80's (and maybe 90's) you could get black and white TV's. Is this situation really any different?

    Obscurity is still a great way to increase security. If the "bad guys" can't even see or hold what we have - that is one layer extra they have to overcome to compromise the system.

    Changing keys in devices is not a trivial ordeal - you need physical transports to every device needing rekeyed. It's time consuming and opens the door for other temporary exploits.

    Obscurity is a good tool but never never never should it be the primary gatekeeper in keeping something secure.

    As for the need for encrypted communication - I am sure there are controls in place that actions to be performed by to the shuttle by NASA on the ground. Wouldn't that be a nice thing to have encrypted and authenticated?
