For some information about other possible file format standards used by the Belgian government, see Belgif, the BELgian Governement Interoperability Framework. A lot of it is still in early stages, but it is nice knowing that the are discussing this in the open, with all possible partners. At least, they are discussing it with the other five governments in Belgium (yes, it seems like a mess. But we can live with it).
Indeed, searching for "ibm brick computer" on Google gives you this ZDNet article, with a picture of the system. I think Slashdot has covered this before, but I couldn't find the story.
Ok, so one link of 1 Watt gives a speed of 1Mbps, but is illegal. Could they make three links of 250 milliWatts, which would give a bandwidth of 900Kbps, but stay legal?
Of course, it could be very well possible that 300Kpbs is enough for this situation.
Howhard would it be to make a device that could write LP's? I have no idea, but I think DJ's would love to have something like this - they could buy the music on CD (so you keep good quality backups), and write them when they need it.
In this case, Mozilla ate the first characters of a print() function. Many ads are constructed using print() statements, and if the first characters are lost, you don't get to see the advertisement (which could be good), but you also end up with strange html (which is bad).
sitting at the computer just to listen to music is stupid
I use my computer to create.ogg files of the CD's I have here. When I start my computer, XMMS starts playing, and I like having constant music.
Another thing I do, is create backups from my CD's (after a tip from another Slashdot reader). That way, I don't have to be afraid of scratches, since I always have my original CD.
These are examples of fair use - if a company limits our rights to fair use, can we sue them then? IANAL, bue maybe one of you is (poor you, of course...)
This is bug number 199684 in Bugzilla (no direct links from Slashdot, you know). They are not sure what to do about it, but they are thinking about it.
I prefer to do both - learn a bit, then check what I created. You can't just start on a page without knowing your possibilities (what tags exist, how they work in other browsers), and you'll save yourself a lot of trouble in the long run. I can validate (X)HTML pages by myself now, so I eliminate most errors.
Actually, the newest Flash version has capabilities for disabled people. the Nielsen Norman Group helped them in adapting the product for different target groups.
The latest Alertbox of Jacob Nielsen talks about Making Flash Usable for Users With Disabilities - also the subject of a tutorial at Macromedia DevCon in Orlando.

I think an[y] femal genetalia related symbol would do nicely.
Maybe '||'? (without the quotes, of course). Its related to the symbols used now, but not the same. And, if you have enough imagination, you could see body parts in it...
I don't think you can place a clear label on Indymedia, link you can't place a clear label on all open software users. We aren't all commies, and we know that.
Indymedia is so heterogenous, that you need to judge individual projects, like this one, if you want to decide to support them or not. They don't have leaders that make up big plans, they are more like lots of local groups that do what they think is good.
And maybe you haven't read the other comments, but Free Geek is supporting this action - so helping them could also mean helping this project;)
The 30 inch Cinema Display has it's price reduced from $2499 to $1999. I don't think this was said on the keynote, but you can see it on the website.

It seems to work under Dosemu and Freedos (Dos emulation for Linux). WINE is overkill, since it doesn't use any Windows stuff.
He is not joking, you can read it on their site.
Yes, but it did that only once. The top speed on normal trips is 300km/h. This is the speed you should compare to the 430 km/h.
The HTML version was generated from the PDF version using pdftohtml (you can see it in the source).
The real question is: why did they use PDF in the first place? Users hate PDF. If you want to give some quick, easy-accessible information, use HTML.

You mean, something like freshmeat.net?
Now even the story posters don't read or verify the articles they're posting...
As they mention on their site, TechTV did a short story about it (it's the last item on the list).
It is todays UF Link of the Day.
In the lecture of John 'Maddog' Hall on the history of open source (this weekend on Fosdem), his slides had 'livre' software on it. Several times...
And now you see it on Slashdot, you do?

Actually, this is the third article about the subject.
Er... I was trying to be ironic...

Why read the HTML 4 specs when you can validate your page?
