Looked like a good book for beginners or those who don't want to view Javadocs over the 'net.

Unnecessary for anyone who's either comfortable with Javadocs or has done a moderate amount of OOP.

As was stated, you can get just about everything in this book online directly from Sun, for free.

They recommended that you don't use IE because that's what most of this nasty software is targeting, not because it's a buggy piece of MS shit. It stands to reason that the most popular browser is going to attract the most amount of attacks. Again. No shit. This isn't news.

Enough of the anti-MS propaganda, it's truly getting ridiculous.

As obvious as it sounds, don't forget lots of people buy XBox's to play it's native games (which are getting better and better). If you already have an XBox, why would you want to invest another few hundred dollars for a Walmart PC? You've already got the hardware right there.

Besides, most of the XBox apps seem to be geared to stuff that was meant to be viewed on a TV instead of a monitor, such as emulators, divx/media players, etc.

Why do you need to be running Linux when you're going on XBox Live? The whole idea here is that when using Live you shouldn't be able to use ANY modchip. When you're not using Live, then hell, mod it to death. When you are, you can't use any modchips that could potentially let you cheat. I see no problem here.

In my opinion, 3 was actually a little better than 4. It was a little anti-climatic, though.

PS, did anyone notice how busy Kirk and co are starting at Khan? Immediately after Khan dies, they go to the starbase (Trek 3), they bring Spock to Vulcan, and on their way home (Trek 4) they have to take out that probe.

    Busy couple of days!

I've been using Live just about every night now, and swearing isn't really rampant. I've found that so far most folks just mute their headsets, and the ones who don't are usually polite. I think for some reason people hold back a little when they're on voice.

Also worth noting is that Live has a system where you can mute users who you don't want to listen to and provide feedback on that player, a la EBay. Supposedly there will be punishment for those who're found to abuse the voice system.

Basically, I don't think it'll really be an issue in the long run, and if it gets that bad I'll just take off the headset or block all of the kidz.

I have the service, and I'm also a PC gamer.

    1. I have noticed NO lag yet, and I've played it at peak internet traffic hours. This service was built with only broadband in mind and has been optimized for it. If you get the chance to try this out, after about an hour of jumping on different servers etc you'll realize this is a non-issue.

    2. Consoles aren't for RTS games. If that's what you're going after, then obviously you stick with a computer. I don't know too many gamers that just play nothing but RTS', though. The resolution is also a bit of a non-issue. Even though I know my games are only playing at 6 by 4, it still looks great. Again, it's just one of those things where you have to play with it yourself to realize how little it really matters.

    3. True, I have a LOT more precision with a mouse and keyboard, but the two-analog-stick system works fairly well. Trust me, it doesn't take any of the fun out of Halo or Unreal Champhionship.

An XBox costs $200. The Live setup costs $50. If you wanted to get Mechassault AND UC it'd be another $100. Toss in another $25 for an extra controller. 375 bucks.

What you get for that is (so far) a lag-free playing environment, the ability to bring over a couple of friends and form teams for CTF or Mechassault or whatever and play with all of them in the same room using one live account against another team of whoever somewhere else in the world. This is a BLAST.

Which XBox games have you played on Live that brought you to the conclusion that it sucks?

XBox live isn't like playing multiplayer games over the internet. It's a hell of a lot easier and faster. The headset works MUCH better than I thought it would, and it does bring in a new dimension to the whole experience.

I very much doubt that you've ever tried out this system.

Speaking generally about screeners and disregarding ethics...

I think there's a novelty to just having a copy of a movie isn't even out in theatres yet, to be watched at your leisure.

A lot of folks don't want to pay the price for a theatre either (coupled with cell phones, kids, etc).

Some people don't really care about the quality of the picture. I watched the screener of Episode 2 when it first came out. Sure, the quality was crap, but generally it's easy to get past it... especially if the storyline is good. Lots of screeners are plugged right into the sound on the flick, so that's not usually painful either.

If these people know how to sniff around the internet a little, they can probably dig up a copy of whatever they know is out there. P2P programs make it easier than ever to get illegal flicks like these- type "screener" or "divx" in your favorite program and see what you get. I'm sure people will stumble on this without even meaning to. At that point, obtaining a copy is only a double click away.

    Why not?

My computer's actually a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I use "clone." Typically, whenever I load up WMA or the DIVX player, my TV automatically goes into a full screen mode showing just the movie, even if my laptop doesn't have the movie going at full screen. I can still do work with it, but if I minimize the player's window (WMA or the DIVX), the picture freezes up. As long as I keep the player window open on the desktop in the background somewhere, though, I can open up other programs without a problem.

I didn't have to change any settings for this, it just worked right off the bat after I plugged it into my TV and set NView for Clone. Maybe you should try updating your drivers? If you want, I can grab my settings and driver version for you to see if that helps. The card I'm using is a GeForce3 Go.

An even easier way to do that is to get a video card that supports tv-out. Nvidia's NView works great for me (I believe that's a pretty standard feature on the new GeForce cards), and if you have a soundcard with a digital coax out cable, you can plug that right into your receiver. I use a WinXP box for this though, so I'm not sure how driver support is on Linux.

Stupid simple, but divx movies look great on my 27 inch TV. If your computer's near your home entertainment setup, I highly recommend looking into getting the two hooked up.
