Yes I realize that.

I just wanted to portray that when asking a newbie question on the linux kernel mailing list is not the right place.
> And not condescending at all. Great!
It is sometimes hard to not be condescending when someone asks you something that you feel is or should be common sense. Of course few things in life are really common sense.
>:) Now, if only all the community had the same attitude...
If we all work together and start a trend of being nice. it just may work out
> I've been wanting to get into this Linux thing for a while, but I'm kinda confused. And nervous.
Understandable
>What is a kernal and changelog?
A kernel is computer code that makes your computer start up and lets you do stuff on it. This is all before your operating system. (the part you are most familiar with likely Windows or MacOS)
The Changelog is a developer documentation that says what has changed in this program.
> And how come everyone that uses it seems to hostile to a newbie asking questions?
Because these are the wrong people for newbies to be asking. This would be like asking the Mechanical engeneers how to change sparkplugs in a car. You need to try directing your questions to one of the distributions
http://redhat.com
http://mandrakelinux.com
http://debian.org
http://slackware.org
> Also, how do you run it?
It requires an install from a distribution first. (see answer from above)
>I tried opening it with winzip and that didn't work.
Yes opening it with winzip would work for the kernel source as you would get a bunch of "C" programming files in a nice neat directory. this is like getting the blue prints to a house to open the front door. (again please see the distribution list above)
>Adaware didn't call it (well, I downloaded something called from www.redhat.com but it didn't work) spyware or anything, but I know alot of freeware has spyware on it. Is linux like that?
Most stuff in linux does not have spyware. Although there is no technical reason for it, it is generaly frowned apon and seen as bad.
> Also, is it REALLY free?
Yes
>Or is it one of those things where you will use it for 30 days and then it takes forever to come up when you click on its icon until you pay?
no there is no payment needed to get the software.
Sorry I know this is hashed to death but has this been tried (I'm sure it has)
negotiate a smaller license price for distributing a cheap Linux update to the windows version. This way you would make the $5-10 on each update and the original distributor would still make there money because you would have to buy both in order for it all to work. You pay far less up front you could have a small cd envelope and not need a full boxed version to ship. You could distribute in magazines etc with a cd key for unlocking the binarys.
I am sure there is a flaw somewhere but it seems it would work.

the first is a new HP 8x700 PIII xeon with 4 gigs of memory
The second is an older machine that will be upgraded soon but is currently 4x550 with 2 gigs memory
This looks like just another linux distribution. Not much new here. When are we going to have something along the lines of BEos or qnx that has a unix like posix enviornment but is really a diffrent animal.
Maybe I am looking for the leap in evolution rather than the more realistic baby steps that are what really seem to drive linux.
It may not be over but the terrorists have already won. Sure we will bo beat them into submission but that is not winning. Mister Bin Laden wasn't crashing airplaines because he thought he would be able to infiltrate the united states and occupy it.
He wasn't planning on winning a war. He was trying to make a point. He was trying to make a change. He was trying to make life for Americans a little worse.
Depends on the productivity all that over clocked processor did for me. If I was able to run vi at 2Gigahertz while everyone else was coding at 1.5Gigahertz then I would have produced 25% more code than them. Over the course of 6 months or more that could be a lot of code.
Its all about economics of scale and if I am going to get 25% more code write because of over clocking than I am far more profitable that the next guy period.
I would say that IBM's desktop is really just more of a marketing loss leader. Sure they my lose money in the fact that PCs are at an extreamely low profit margin market, but they get the piece of mind from people that see IBM on there desktops at work.
Just becasue Joe Schmoe is useing an as390 server if he has a Dell desktop he thinks he is useing a Dell computer for everything.
IBM already has the big name and everything but for them to keep it they need to make sure that they have computers on peoples desks and not just in the server room.
I think it would be a bad idea for IBM to stop selling PCs completely but maybe just come up with a way to reduce the loss some.
I don't udnerstand I own hand guns (.38 and.22) but I have never killed anyone. There have been a few beer cans that have seen better days, but I haven't killed anyone. Kinda strange considering they have no porpous other than to kill people.
>YHBT YHL HAND oh, and also, YOU ARE A FUCKING MORON
This is always a possibility. I will look into it and see.

Why yes, Yes I did.
Is there a problem with that?
a few bites of html is excessive?????????
My god how much do you pay for your bandwidth?????
I kinda like it.

Zack Zack he's a Beowulf maniac

hahaha charge an arm and a leg. charge me an arm and a leg to grow a new arm and leg???
sorry that was funny I couldn't help it.
and one post in a pear tree
Just my two servers worth.
These are our biggest servers
First system 2.4k

both are at or above this load level all the time

anyone understand what I'm asking?

In that he won on 9/11
I am Number 2
hehehe now that is funny
Im sorry I ment it to be funny. I guess I should have specified that rather than assume someone might pick up on the humor on their own. My mistake.

Ohh yea, I forgot. It's ok to prey on stupid people. They are stupid they deserve it.
Like a sig i think I saw here on Slashdot:
87% of all statistics are made up.
What if it is an X Server????? X Servers do need good graphics cards in them to be any good.
I don't udnerstand I own hand guns (.38 and .22) but I have never killed anyone. There have been a few beer cans that have seen better days, but I haven't killed anyone. Kinda strange considering they have no porpous other than to kill people.
I don't think you can really expect anyone to keep up an NT box. :)
