  2. Re:Gay marriage on Using Copyright To Suppress Political Speech · · Score: 1
I think you really have no idea what clout the gay vote has. In fact minority votes have a huge impact because, socially speaking, minorities have huge social clout. When you piss off a minority they get angry and cause a stir. As a politician that mobilizes people who would otherwise be indifferent to the cause against you.

As for your bigoted views as to sexuality being a choice and going against the "grain of traditional society" I would pickup a history book and see if that's really true. You'll quickly find that it is not. In many cutlures, such as ancient Greek and fist nations, homosexuals were exhaulted. In much of modern times we've always existed but have been persecuted.

For instance in the 1960's Tupperware parties actually served as a front for womens liberation. Queer women could meet other queer women without their husbands around. Even straight women could enjoy a cigar or a glass of brandy and do "unlady-like" things. Meanwhile the husbands would be at country clubs which were often the reserve of bisexual and gay men to meet eachother without their wives around. We've always existed. It's only today that we can be out and proud to live our lives and seek our inalienable right to freedom.

It is testament to our society that people of all sexualities, colours and race expect to be treated equally. And our responsibility as a just and equitable society is to grant people their equal rights.

Let's not leave out the fact that lots of these costs occur because of the nature of the UK as a trading nation. Having lived both in the UK and Canada I can say that it probably just isn't feasible to build the same industrial and transport infrastructure that we have here. Not that the EU and the UK aren't building new more innovative infrastructures that meet the limitations of available space, environmental impact and budget. It's just that in North American we enjoy the fuits of 20th century technology such as huge high capacity highways and freeways that span thousands of miles, inland seaways, air freight and most importantly: a crapload of space and seemingly unlimited environmental resources to plunder!

Let's not also forget that minimum wage in North American is about £3 whereas it's £5 in the UK and even more inside of large cities like London. Having lived in both countries I think it's a myth that people in the UK make less money and have higher cost of living. Maybe in the past however today I can safely say that you make more in the UK but also pay more.

There is a dark side to the "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" mantra of the USA as well. Whereas in the UK you can buy reasonable quantities at a fair price it is increasingly difficult here to buy small quantities without getting hosed. In the case of perishables this is a real losing proposition for consumers. For non-perishables it's just annoying. 10 liters of thumb-tacks anyone?

It's all rather even in the end, annecdotally speaking.

Dude, most Nokia phones are fantastic. The 6xxx/5xxx series have been the benchmark in which other phones are held against for ages now. I'd guess it's the 7160 model that kinda sucks, it was never made in a TDMA/CDMA version for the US and mostly just used in Europe as a GSM model. Meaning it likely didn't make the cut for durability. I wouldn't give up on Nokia, I've had a 918, 5160, 6180 and now a 8360 and totally been in love with every one.

I agree with you except on the point that he's "blaming" downloaders. Moby is also the man quoted as saying "trying to stop p2p filesharing is like yelling at the tide".

If you read the article he's more making the distinction between his equally large group of fans and that of P!NK and the like. Fans of the later are likely younger girls coping with stuff like body imagine problems and crushes as opposed to moby fans who likely fit better into the early-20s. Now that we've established those sweeping generalizations it can be assumed that the 20-somethings are a little more savvy to sharing files, especially entire albums

I can understand Moby's perspective, even if he is an egomaniac.
