And that's ignoring the increased caloric consumption of Gatorade (powder form, which doesn't contain HFCS, not the pre-made liquid, which does). I probably did drop my caloric intake a little bit, but I don't believe it's >400 kCals a day. Dunno. The literature is inconsistent, but one paper that struck me was this, from a group at U of Toronto.

I definitely agree. HFCS is pure unadulterated evil. I essentially gave up soda (I have one or two a month) & tried to avoid HFCS in other foods, essentially no other diet changes, no significant change in exercise regime (just golf & walk). Still drink Gatorade (i.e. glucose water) when I golf. Went from 185 lbs (BMI 26.5, overweight) to 158 lbs (BMI 22.7, normal). In eight months. For me, at least, HFCS is fatness in a bottle.

But for software that's written by government entities, paid for by my tax dollars, should be available to all taxpayers at the same rate.

Does the grad student have to pay tuition or not? Also salaried workers can also be paid little due to lack of overtime.

At least in the life sciences, at major research universities, no. The grad students don't pay tuition. They also get reasonable benefits. Doesn't change the fact that in many cases they're being paid well below minimum wage. And while salaried workers can definitely be paid less than they think due to long hours w/o overtime, I'd love to see documentation that they're being paid less than the Federal minimum wage of $5.85 an hour. There are definitly grad students being worked for that (they are, after all, on salary).

My point is that Universities aren't just acting like corporations, they're acting like corporations that have special competitive advantages against private companies, and more than take advantage of that.

Technically, yeah, using patented materials & processes in the course of basic research at US universities may not be officially sanctioned, but it is the standard way of doing business. Of course, resulting materials may not be patentable, in which case it's usually "clean-roomed" to make sure there's a patentable paper trail before official documents get sent to the tech transfer office.

Universities are corporations, nothing more or less.

Except Uni's are completely free to ignore everyone else's patents in the course of their research, have access to all scientific software at much much cheaper "academic" rates, and can pay grad students slave wages ($15,000 per year for a 3000 hour work week is well below the Federal minimum wage). So while they behave in many ways like corporations, they have a number of government-issued advantages in the competition. Who'd have thunk it, the government giving itself an advantage.

Hence the indefinite conditional detention is most likely to end via exit boots first, or if the prisoner has ended their usefulness, they can be handed over to e.g. Egypt for long term warehousing.

Feel free to point out "the great majority of the people detained by the U.S. deserve to be detained because they are either persons who have used violence or planned violence against others." I would suggest that since all evidence against such detainees is classified and has not, and will not, be released to the public, you have jack shit of evidence that they deserve to be there. The willingness of the American public to swallow the executive branch story, hook line & sinker, despite being shown over and over again what a load they are being handed, really makes me shake my head in wonder.

Making everybody a Jedi was Sony's last gasp w/ Galaxies. At that point it feelt so non-Star Wars-ish (i.e. City of Jedis) that everybody got bored and left. I think many players (esp. casual players) wish to be a Jedi as seen in the movies-- i.e. with cool powers that very, very few people around you have. That don't fly in a MMO.

  15. Re:ground breaking? on LucasArts, BioWare Announce Partnership · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Probable results for your solutions:

    1. Nobody buys the MMO, as everybody wants to play a Jedi. Game fails

    2. People buy the MMO, because they think they can become Jedi. They find out that they have to be hardcore to become Jedi
2a) Casual gamers quit, game fails b/c revenue from hardcores isn't enough to keep it open
2b) Casual gamers complain until Lucasarts forces Bioware to let everybody become Jedi

The problem is, Jedi are rare, and have power on a level way above "normals" in the Star Wars universe. Everyone's a fan of the Jedi, so everyone wants to play them. So for an MMO, you either have to nerf Jedi, make it nearly impossible to become one, or accept that everybody can be one & the universe turns into "City of Jedis". Sony tried all three w/ Galaxies, how's that working out for them?

Star Wars is a great setting for a single player game, but I'll be astounded when somebody makes a successful MMO out of it. It's like LOTR if everyone wants to play Gandalf.
