  1. club only FTP mirror on Mandrake Clarifies its Future · · Score: 2

As a mandrake club member, I think there would be twice as many members if they had a members-only FTP mirror. What good is a club membership if you have to wait with the non-members for the new releases? It's like joining a private a golf club and finding out that it is open to the public for less than what the members pay.

  3. they won't go up that much on PC Prices to Rise? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I really don't think prices will go up too much and if they do go up it will probably be a temporary increase. Look how much competition there is amongst the PC makers. The reason why PC prices are so low is because of the ease of entry in to the marketplace coupled with rapidly changing technology and a reduced consumer demand for the latest and greatest PC. Ten years ago, you had to buy a new computer every two years in order to run the latest and greatest software. Not so anymore, a Pentium II will run just about everything the non-gamer needs to run, plus I've seen some thrifty gamers running P-II's with not too much of a problem, besides a little wait.

I know people have experienced problems with Gnutella clients in the past but Limewire has improved dramatically over the past few months. If your willing to spend $8.50 you can get the pro version which has no bundled software and has a few additional features. You can always use the free version and run Ad Aware to get rid of the additional apps. Limewire is open source too so you can compile it yourself and remove the additional apps plus it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The 2.3 version has a bunch of new features including the ability to search by media type: audio, video, programs, etc.

One observation I made the other day while looking for this PDA on ebay is that they are going for a little over $300 dollars new. This is not a good sign for the product, considering that usually when a hot niche product is released they go for around the retail price or over in some circumstances (Ipod, Imac, PS2, Xbox, etc).

Instead of having program expiration, what about a notification system that is package independent so it works with all distros? When the system is booted up the user is alerted to new updates automatically. The app would have a link to download the update via the web and also have a link to the distro specific package updater. You could even have a modified version for corporate lans so update alerts for multiple boxen get sent to the lazy sysadmin's system.

You can still find a lot of network feeds on C-band, although its extremely outdated compared to the newer services. I guess the local affiliates didn't make a fuss about c-band because it was expensive and not widely adopted compared to Cable.

Their reason for allowing this was the band felt that they had "made their money" Each member had enough to keep their families set for life.

The Grateful Dead did not allow live recording because they "had their money", they used live recordings as a promotional tool. The Dead allowed people to record their concerts from the beginning. Part of their success is owed to the distribution of live shows. JamBands such as Phish have kept with that tradition with much success. A lot of Phish's early growth (pre 95) can be traced to the distribution of bootleg tapes. People heard the tape, went to a show, and eventually bought a CD, T-shirt, etc. This paradigm works great with bands who emphasize live performances and grass routes growth.

I guess your trying to apply Intel's Mhz empasis to cars, the 2Ghz p3 is 2X faster than Apples 1gz G4. A corvette z06 does not seat 4 people and you have obviously never looked in to buying an M5 because there are only 4 options because M-series cars come loaded without any options.

BMW's engineers focused on performace and getting the most out of smaller engines. If you want to compare Macs to car, I think a mercedes is a better fit. People buy mercedes because of brand recognition not because of performance. You true-blue BMW owner buys a BMW because it performs better than any other comparible car with the same features. That's why a $65,000 M5 blows the doors off of a $130,000 mercedes with the same features. The BMW owner would pick up a Athlon XP 2000 system with a geoforce 4 for under $1000 which would perform better than this powermac for $3000

The receipt for payment doesn't even notify the customer that he will be receiving a login. Some people probably pay and mistakenly assume that it is just a donation until 4 days later when they get a login.
