I think OpenBSD would be much better off providing ISO images for download. A realize OSS isn't a popularity contest but they could probably get a lot more funding with increased popularity so they wouldn't have to depend on CD sales. FTP download is nice, but most people are accustomed to using ISO images plus there are many occasions where installs are taking place on a system without net access. The major Linux distros wouldn't be nearly as popular if they didn't provide ISO images.
The problem is whether you like it or not, windows is a standard so in order to appeal to the great majority of windows users, a linux interface needs to be windows-like. Think about keyboards for a second, the DVORAK layout has be proven to be a more efficient keyboard layout but the problem is QWERTY became a standard before DVORAK was introduced. The introduction of new features or methods in a UI must be incremental or it will never become popular.
I agree, I've been a big fan of the NBA 2K series and it is by far the best basketball series ever made. I was so addicted to the original NBA 2K 2 years ago that I had to sell my dreamcast to a friend. Luckily, I bought back from him last fall with 10 games included for $40 bucks;)
Where they planning on using passport for the XboX online? I would imagine so, it really pisses me off when I run in to a site that uses passport or even worse forces you to get a passport account. A good example is CNBC's website which now forces old accounts to "upgrade" to a passport account.
Its a good thing OpenBSD doesn't provide a good amount of detail about their protcols and API's. Otherwise, it might become vulnerable to crackers real quick.
I think the pop-up ad killing capabilities are great, but there seem to be workarounds for web developers. Everytime I go to the NY times, I still get Orbitz pop-ups from ad.doubleclick.net. Obviously, I can block ad.doubleclick.net in/etc/hosts, but for less technically minded users, there has to be a better solution. You can test out the specific ad in mozilla, here.
Although I shouldn't even validate such miserably poor post with a response, I will make an exception here. I happen to be a gun owner, and someone who believes that citizens should be allowed to own firearms, ANY firearm after completing a reasonable amount of training and background checks. You can be pro-gun and anti-nra. One other thing, you can also be pro-gun and not buy in to the bullshit idea that there is a constitutional right to bear arms that still applies in our current time.
but it seems to me they would have more political clout if their total membership tally were much larger
If this were true most political organizations would offer a free membership but there are probably two reasons why they don't:
Money Talks..
Less people would pay because they could get the same "inner reward" by joining for free.
If a political foundation had to choose between a million free members, or a million dollars, they would probably choose the latter because the fact is money will bring you more influence. The free membership option would cannibalize their lower value donations which the EFF depends on. For example, the NRA counts on having gun-toting hicks send in their $25/year do you think the hicks would still pay if they could say they are an NRA member and not pay a dime?
There is nobody, I mean NOBODY here who can't spare $25 bucks for the EFF. I'm sick of hearing sob stories on here about poor students who can't spare a dime yet they probably spend 20 hours a week trolling slashdot. Go work at McDonald's for a day, quit, and then send your paycheck to the EFF.
I no longer live in the NEPA(North Eastern PA) area, but I can give a little insight in to why the government of Wilkes-Barre is backwards. The mayor of WB, Tom McGroarty has done nothing to improve the quality of life in the area.
So far in his 8 years of office(estimate) he has managed to get 2 government buildings and a telemarketing center in the downtown. Government buildings may look nice but they are basically a resource drain because they don't pay any taxes. There are some other new businesses, but they are in tax free development zones. The one government building is home to the offices of rep. Paul Kanjorksi who as actually managed to a great disservice to the community but he is a senior congressman who will never loose an election due to name recognition and voter habit. Anyway, it looks like Mcgroarty will not be reelected this year so the situation may improve but most likely not.
McGroarty actually looked promising initially because he was very enthusiastic. It turned out that he just craved attention. The problem with WB and all NEPA politics for that matter, is the fact that competent people do not want to run for office. Most of the talented younger people leave the area, and the people who are left that would make a difference are usually tied to a business or career path which prevents them from running for office. I really don't see an end to this cycle unless competent people start getting politically involved in this area.
Well, I went to school outside of Wilkes-Barre in Kingston, I grew up there since the age of 3, not in center city WB but a suburb known as Dallas, which was actually named Dallas before the other city in that other state beating the same name became popular. Obviously there are a lot of issues facing this area but I take great offense in to the singling out of Wilkes-Barre as out of the ordinary, when compared to the thousands of other cities with dying downtown districts.
The downtown area of Wilkes-Barre is hardly the center of the area, like any other city in the US, Wilkes-Barre's downtown district has become a victim of sprawl. The McDonald's you speak of went out of business last month but there are many more to take its place outside of the downtown area. As for your other comments, I'm not even going to waste any energy responding to them..
Look on the bright side, we were the first town to have Cable..
Walt Mossberg has a good review of Dataplay. He sights numerous reasons why it will fail, but his main objection is the rights managment, "feature." I submitted it a few days ago but:
How could they have GIF's on the movie's website when one of the main stars is RMS. You think there would be a clause about that in his contract.
Umm Where is the source?

How can you have a movie about open source without making the video available for download in a non-proprietary format that includes the script in a.RTF file?
I think black boxen look great, but if you have a dust problem, you will end up cleaning your boxen every day. This problem is especially apparent if you have multiple boxen in a small confined area. My black Klipsch promedia speakers look filfy, 24 hours after cleaning them. Beige works well because it hides the dirt. It may not be pretty, but it sure is practical.
KaZaA should of predicted the amount of backlash it would face when adding distributed spyware to it's installer. Consumers are willing to tolerate some level of spyware, as we have seen with the variety of P2P apps with "bundled apps", but KaZaA has not just stepped over the line, they flew over it. Now look at where they are at, the name KaZaA is synonymous with spyware, but more importantly KaZaA has been removed from download.com, I can't think of a worst fate for a windows app.
I think your reffering to JavaScript orginally called livescript by Netscape before the Java buzz hit. JavaScript has nothing to do with Java. Java is relatively secure by most standards.
A couple of years ago warez newbies would use websites if they didn't know about IRC but these days, P2P clients like KaZaA, Morpheus, and Limewire make downloading warez 10x easier for the non-irc crowd. Why would they worry about web sites now? That's like the RIAA coming out with countermeasures for analog tape piracy.
Well I can understand why they rebranded kword as wordpublisher, kword or kanything does not make any sense to the mainstream consumer. If they are trying to make a distro for the common user, its understandable why they would change some of the names around. I can understand why some of the developers would be upset but as long as the include they source it's perfectly legal.
Entertaining the press is probably not necessary, I doubt games like Half-Life, Q3, GTA3, need to bribe the press in order to ensure positive reviews. The smoozing the press strategy is probably helpful for games that can't sell on themselves or had a negative media reaction initially.

Stick to KDE-look for your KDE themes, themes.org doesn't even have one KDE 3.0 theme

Add this to the long list of Microsoft presentation blunders. A too hot for TV MS bloopers tape is due out soon.

The first hands on review of the nomad 3 is available here.
Well according to the first review it works with other firewire adaptors as well.

Well every Best Buy has mandrake boxes, plus a few other distros, and they are a nationwide chain.
