I'm a bit sceptical of this since there doesn't appear to be any pictures. Is this thing actually in production or did they put up some specs that could turn in to vaporwear real quick?
Does anyone know how good the SPDIF connecters are on this thing? Creative has a history of suppling crappy digi IO with their products such as the soundblaster live. I would love to pick one of these up to do some laptop taping but right now people don't even accept DAT's that are copyied on to the hard drive via sblive. I don't want to pick up one these and find out that the digi IO is useless.
Does anyone know the current status of TF2? I remember back in 1998 TF2 was scheduled to be released as an add-on pack for Half Life in late November. I even pre-ordered it from EB that summer. I ended up getting an e-mail from EB in early 99 stating that my pre-order was canceled due to release changes.
I don't think IBM has been a big player in the desktop market since the days before the PS/2. The main problem is that most consumers are extremely price sensitive and are not willing to pay to a premium for the IBM name unlike corporate buyers who never got fired for buying IBM. Tack on high prices to unimpressive design and have you have a bad combination.
TechTV already has a gaming show called Extended PLay. It gives pretty good PC and console game reviews. Unfortunatly techTV is not available on most cable systems but it is on directTV.
I really don't think the audigy is worth it's 3 figure price tag. For the average gamer or multimedia user there are really no new features that should entice users to drop there live 5.1's. The only reason I could see getting this is if you want to add the built in firewire port but why do that when you can pick up a new firewire card on pricewatch for $15 bucks.
One thing that creative never seems to "get" is that their digital IO connections are terrible. They are extremly noisy and do not provide correct digital IO. Here is an article explaining the flaws of creative's digital IO. From what I understand, this is not improved under the Audigy. Because of this, I'm forced to have 2 sound cards, a live for my FPS and MP3 addiction and a DATport for digital IO.
I know people have already mentioned that Fujitsu is coming out with some trasnmeta models but the Fujitsu P-1000 is available for order now and looks really promising. You can order one right here.
As far as specs go the P-1000 weighs 3.5 pounds and is only 1.5 inches thick. This includes a combo DVD/CDR drive for only $1500 with 128 megs. It can be upgraded to 256 megs of ram.
So does this mean that CmdrTaco will be protected from the FBI when he gets caught pirating Debian CD's?

The point of this device is to have the ability to play digital music on your AV equipment which is generally located in another room. In my house the living room is at the opposite end and one floor down from where my boxen reside. If I wanted to change a track using an audio cable solution, I would have to get up and go upstairs. This device allows users to do that from the comfort of their sofa. I don't want to stick an ugly beige box in my living room. This device and others like provide a lot more functionality than your solution. And no, an RF remote for a PC would also not work because you wouldn't be able to display the tracks.
It seems like cracking down on pirating operations done by college students is an exercise in futility. Even though they are from rich schools, most of these kids would not purchase the software even if they had the money.
A lot of software companies seem to almost enjoy piracy to some extent because it conditions these young users to use their product. That way, when they have graduated college, they can afford to buy the next version of the product for their personal use, but more importantly, recommend it to the company they are working for.
I patch off rigs that cost anywhere from 3-7k and generally consist of very high end mics, ususally Scheops or B&K, a preamp, and portable DAT usually a tascam DA-P1. Anyway, quality is of the upmost in importance. Check out Etree to see what I mean. Click here to check out some equipment.
People seem to be confused in to thinking that P2P is just file sharing, P2P includes: Instant Messaging, Networked Devices(such as bluetooth), web services and even a lot of old school stuff such as Usenet fits under the P2P definition. What is the definition of P2P some may ask? Well, according to the Oreilly P2P book in a chapter written by Clay Shirkey the P2P Litmus test is:
Does it allow for variable connectivity and temporary network addresses?
Does it give nodes at the edges of the network significant autonomy?
I don't think Sun is funding this on the idea that there will be instant monetary benefits from Jxta, but I do think Sun is looking to implement features of P2P in to their own product line sometime in the future. Even if they don't incorporate any P2P features in future projects, what they are trying to do is get a head start over Microsoft for the "Next Big Thing." Is P2P going to be the "Next Big Thing?" Well, that is obviously debatable but one only needs to look at the top ten applications on Download.com to see that at least the file sharing and IM P2P applications are incredibly popular.
I've been waiting for affordable DVD recordables for a long time. In a previous life, I spent a lot of time taping Phish and other bands that allow taping. I have over 500 DATS that I want to transfer to another format. DAT tapes start to degrade around five years after they are recorded on. CDR works but it takes 3 CD's for one concert. What I would prefer to do is use a lossless compression format such as SHN and put 10+ DATS on one DVD-R.
The technology is there but the media prices are ridiculous. DVD-R prices hover at around 15 to 25 bucks. The drives are not too bad, the HP drive goes for around $560 street but until the media comes down to earth it doesn't seem worth it for me. Now if I had an interest in video, I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

Its almost the 2002! I was promised flying cars. Where are the flying cars?
The riocar is a really nice product but I want something that is compatible with my BMW headunit so the phatbox is the solution for me. If I was willing to replace my headunit, I would prefer the riocar over the phatbox. I think phatnoise realizes this and that is why they are initially targeting audi and bmw owners.
Just in case anyone is looking to play MP3's in a car, The Phatnoise Phatbox is now shipping. Check and see if your headunit is currently compatible. I'm going to pick one up as soon as I can scrounge the cash. I beleive the software is not currenly linux compatible but the the actual unit does run Linux.
One thing is for sure, the people at Mailboxes don't have a clue when it comes to computer related items. I was in a rush to ship 2 Pentium II processors(the slot kind) on eBay. The PII's are protected with some pretty thick plastic. I used mailboxes and both processors arrived smashed to bits. I told the guy to pack with extra bubblewrap around the processors, but yet they arrived with no wrap at all in an unpadded envelope.
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 with a UXGA screen running at 1600x1200 and it is simply fabulous. Readability is an issue but using larger fonts works just fine. I highly recommend the dell if don't mind lugging it around.
Linux installs without too much of a hassle too. The only tricky part is setting up X especially if you have the geoforce 2go.
One characteristic of the Internet that was not mentioned in the article is competition.

Google.com gets about 100 million page impressions per day right now. With a penny per page, Google would make $1 million a day, or something like $350 million per year.
Issue #1
If google adopted the "penny per page" model you would see the numbers get cut in half because there will always be a competitor who will offer free service. That's what's so great about the Internet, your not forced to stick with one supplier. Isn't google profitable anyway?
Issue #2
What happens when I search for something on google using the "penny per page" model and I don't find what I'm looking for? The problem with this model is that it doesn't determine the value of the page for the customer. You will be paying a penny for a steak and a penny for Ramen noodles.
I agree, generally if you paying for a $1000 dollar CD player, your getting really good D>A converters. As long as you receiver has SPDIF in, why not buy a standard $300 CD changer and plug in to your receiver digitally? I'm sure there may be extremly minor differences in quality which can only be heard by the poor sap who paid $1000 for a CD player.
I'm a bit sceptical of this since there doesn't appear to be any pictures. Is this thing actually in production or did they put up some specs that could turn in to vaporwear real quick?

Given that the great majority of slashdot readers speak english, why not include a link to an english translation? Are we expected to know German?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Terrapin Mine handheld that is so heavily advertised on slashdot. It holds 10 gigs and runs on linux too.

As is often true on O'Reillynet, the article's well-thought and interesting reading.
