With all the recent misuse to laws, or better stated "the loop holes". I am sure that this will also open an entire new onslaught of people using this to fill pathetic suits.
After the body has been made into a diamond what happens when
You are mugged?... Is this kidnapping?
What if you leave your diamond lying on the bathroom floor??.. Is this inappropriate treatment of a corpse?
What if you are wearing a diamond ring and engage in vaginal foreplay while wearing it??.. Could you be arrested and charged as a necrophiliac(sp)?
On the flip side.. this gives man a whole new meaning to "Protecting the family jewels":)
Not exactly! if Hollywood calculated estimated sales of ten million videos and they only sold eight million, and meanwhile discovered that you had copied the movie against their wishes - They could turn around and say that the losses were due to your illegal activity.
Don't get me wrong.. I think the movie and record comapnies should all jump off the highest building they own, but stranger things have happened when they start using their money and suing the average defensless Joe.
I figure they could state it in two different manners
1 - If you had the movie stored on your system and also had a p2p program of any type installed - they could say that sales losses where diretly effected by your sharing of the movie.
or
2 - They could state that if you copied the movie (especially if on DVD), and bypassed their.. umm.. 'security' measures, that you most likely shared that process with others. Thereby cutting into their profits.
Either way the movie and recording companies will continue to strong arm the public until the complete foundation falls apart at the seems. And when it does it will creat a mini-anarchy of a turning point in all of this.
Until then, I suggest that we continue to fight and argue and hold on tight for the ride.
It would seem as though a good percentage of you missed the overall picture concerning Dell's hated "Dude" - And that is EVERYONE knows him. The same goes for the micro-mini machines with that guy who talked to fast.. and Crazy Eddie.. screaming out prices so loadly you'd sometimes mute the TV.
Market tradegies typically indicate that a person must see, hear, think of (or in any type, come across) your comapny name or product 22 times before they will potential switch to you service or product. And the 'Dude' - "Steve" just stuck one more memory in your head.. Dell !
I'm sure that Dell's move to supply a generic model to retailers can and does have a more broad plan of attack then may be seen at first. Even if the end effect is jsut to have you think, hear and come across their name once more. Though by that time you have already purchased something of theirs.
Additionally in the current market, major companies are folding and buckeling under the current market strains. Comapnies need to diversify as much as they can to ensure that they are hear for tomorrow.
I agree with an early post from someone over at slimdevices that the profit margins are cut in half (if not more) but when you have the choice of cutting profits and staying in business or closing your doors.. well.. you decide.
I agree with most of your post, in that a diamond is a time honored tradition. But remember that there are other ring-bearing traditions that go much deeper and far beyond the new fangled rocks.
My alternative will be stated in a moment, but first I want to give you a few things to think about.
1- Tradition is strongly rooted and if you search back far enough you will find 'True' time honored traditions of the heart.
2- Women love to feel unique. Currently most women accomplish this by getting the bigger diamond. Though there are other ways to separate them into a truely unique field of their own. Separating them entirely from everyone they know. And at an EXTREMELY low cost.
3- What is a time and time again statement from married women whose husbands go away with the boys. Or leave on business trips??? Will they take off their ring? What if you could absolutely prove to her you wouldn't?
4- Couple with #3, what if it was your true love that showed her you were true to her and would never stray?
Answer: A puzzle ring.
These rings consist of many bands, ranging from 4 bands, to as many as 8 (I've seen as many as 12, but they are rare.)
These bands come in gold, silver and many different designs. The makers of these rings can usually customize them and possible add diamond chips (for appeal) if you wish. The are inexpensive, in the area of $100 to $250 each for gold, and even cheaper if you choose silver. I'm sure they come in white gold also.
These rings have quite a history dating back (from what I found) to midevil times. The ring consisting of bands that interlock to form the ring. But remove the ring and the ring falls apart. The come with no instruction and are very difficult to reassemble. The more bands that you have, the more complicated it becomes.
When I suggested these to my girlfriend (prior proposal) she was overwhelmingly pleased that I would even suggest such a thing. That I would willingly want to put somethign on my hand that I couldn't take off in the heat of the moment or at a glance of a pretty woman coming my way., Though I reassure you, that I wouldn't anyway, I truely love her, but the extra notion of dedication was purifying to the occasion.
And as I said, ALL of her friend and co-workers are jealous, more over that their husbands wouldn't dare where that type of ring.
Wrong or right.. I made the correct choice.
Here is an example of the rings.. I simply seached E-bay, but I am sure there are other avenues to follow in order to purchase such rings. The sellers on e-bay often advertise that they custom make these ring.. and size and many styles.
Happy shopping and good luck with a life time of happiness to both of you!
It seems that, for the most part, all palms and variants are mainly the same. I am still chugging along with my Palm IIIxe and putting aside the desire for a rechargable cradel instead of using AAA power.. I have found no great reason to compel me to purchase a newer model. It appears that everything after the originals are simply bell and whistles with no "I've got to have it" functionality. What about Palms that come equipped with built in radar detectors.. so while on the road you can mount it to your dash board and plug it into your cigarette lighter! Or built in scanning capabilities that are able to detect Radio frequencies so I can scan my house for wire taps and bugs. Or a montion detector that I can point around the corner of my cubicle.. and will sound off when my boss is coming.
I mean really!! Even M$ comes with tons of useful things already in it.. even if the system itself sucks.
Oh.. one last thing.. what about a built in unique encryption key.. with a retractable USB cord. This can be plugged into any USB equipped machine and you can use the key for file encryption or even for identity purposes simalair to a keyspan.
Maybe it's just me and my tight wallet.. but I don't see the hype lately!
A few days ago I came across this picture that was found on a Hotline server. Evidently it was to only be a mock up that was previously on other sites. But could this actually be true?
Seems ironic that this picture would pop up short before (or during) these recent parts purchases by Apple.
Everyone knows that a subliminal state of mind is very powerful and has been thoeretically tested and proven based on case study. A major concern of something I am unaware of is: How immediate are the effects of subliminal suggestions?
IE: What would happen if the 'net connection were to dropped during a suggestive state.. would we become vegatables?
What if the screen skipped.. would we wake up with a stutter? Or what if the content was hacked and tomorrow we all woke up and found ourselves transferring our money to some off-shore account and killing or neighbors?
I know this sounds far fetched... But in reality, if the content was hacked and a idea or suggestion was implanted into the imagery.. how long (if ever) would it take to be discovered? And when it was.. would it be to late? Who would be responsible?
Hell, maybe the message can reprogram your mind to never see the message in the first place.
Sending personal data isn't bad, it's the means of collection.
I strongly believe that if most people were given an option to send data back to companies to offest their costs.. they would! Providing they new exactly what they were sending and had options/selections to choose from. In other words.. I would allow it if I had a menu that I could grant permission to send my physical address, and what type of OS I am using, but not my phone number or email address or my reg codes of my software (looking for piracy.) I have no problem indentifing my gender, age, HS, height, weight, interests ect..
While some poeple may not want to offer as much as I do, at least it would give everyone an opt in/out and cause the spy-ware to become offer-ware
I completely agree. IRC has a huge influence in my computing life. Starting about 16 years ago on CompuServes, which was then called 'CB Channels'
And quite costly too!
But as of about 7 years ago EFnet opened my world.. gave me an incentive to learn tcl, perl and c so I could confgiure, adapt and expand the capabilities of eggdrops. I know.. !seen isn't much to boast about.. but a door is a door none-the-less. And that was an important door.
Now a day when you mention irc, the first response you get from people is "Oh yeah! Yahoo!" hehe.. um, no! I wish the best of luck to this project and I fully support their effort.
OMG! That is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard! WHo in their right mind would sit down and waste the time to construct such a replusive story. I guess I'll be skipping lunch and dinner today.. and possibly tomorrow also.
removing the entire cap, why didn't they choose a proof-to-purchase method. A little over a year ago when I purchased a few class C's for UU, I almost had to chew my leg off in showing that I needed the class C's that I wanted to buy. I understand this was/is due to limited supply and thereby it didn't bother me. I would much rather prove without a doubt that I need them, then have some other company (or individual) come along and buy them all and try to sell them back to me for three times the amount.
Anyway.. the same could have easily been done with the needed frequencies. "We'll give you more, but first show us that you need them and what you need them for and how you will use them in a fair way to not hurt the little guy" - HSJ
I see art as a basic expression of the artist views of life and the world around them. It doesn't matter if it is a video game, graphic, code or a molded pile sh*t. One who has created something that had not previously existed, or one that has taken something and modified it into how they see it; so that the worl can see it as they do... this person has created art. It's that simple!
There is an artist out there that can sign his name to Mr Hankey... and if someone can sign their name to a tird.. then video games are first rate Mona Lisa's!
Carrying a key to work would be no different then carrying the cd.. except now the key itself may have 5 cd's on it.. or 100 songs of your choice.
Equipment becoming obsolete? Like the VHS's in Blockbuster that are disappearing and being replaced by DVD's? Or the boom box in my bedroom that has dusty cassette decks with umm... *cough* Hi-Fi Hi-Speed dubbing:)
To identify yourself would not require a DL # OR ss #. Heck.. at your first purchase you could choose a use name and password of your choice and then choose ANY defining third option you wish. Using the CC puirchasing method, confirmation of address, or whatever.. As I said it's not perfect and is in no means a final thought. But I still believe it is a strong (if not the strongest) feasible solution thus far.
No they wouldn't. With no media they would save on shipping cost. They could do one of three things.
1 - Ship one of each song title to each of the stores and allow the store to upload the song into their own database
2 - Allow the store to do early morning updates via a high speed connection
3 - Have no music at the store at all. All music when purchased would be pulled directly from the reocrding companies music database.
In any of those examples the the shipping costs, volume shipped and cost for store floor footage would be greatly reduced (no media.. no need for large store floors).
You also wouldn't need to worry about items becoming 'out dated' and no longer available. All items will always remain available at the sotres systems. No need to wait on order-only items or older 'no longer in production' items.
The story does mention the video feed, but what about sound? With a good hack and a high speed net access , I could actually make sure the kids (and the wife) are behaving while I am at work. And I could roam the house and the yard! I think I'll have to install a pet door?
I have thought about this and believe that this would allow for both sides to get want they want. No distribution of music while allowing the consumer to play anywhere and back up as much as they wish.
The recording companies will sell high capacity memory cards @ the cost of manufacturing them. Each card has a random identification number embedded in it which will also be 'salt' for the encryption.
Any location re/selling music will be equipped with a digital recorder. When you purchase music you take your high capacity card with you. (You don't actually purchase tangible media). You give them your memory card and they load your purchased music on it, whish is also being encrypted while being stored (using the embedded ID#). The music store then stores your ID# and the music selection to their database.
You take your memory card home to your home stereo system and upload the music from the card to the radio's internal drives. You can also upload the music to your computer, car radio (also equipped with an internal drive) etc... And in order to play the music stored on ANY of these items, all you need to do is pop in your memory card.. the id number on the memory card is used to decode the stored music and then played if it decodes correctly.
Optionally if you want to play music on a system that does not have your music in it, simple copy the music selection(s) you wish to here to you memory card before leaving your home and play it anywhere right from the memory card. If you copy the music from the card to someone elses drives... their card won't decode your music because the ID that is read from their card is different from the the code used to encrypt the your music.
In the event of a total loss of music, you can go back to the store where you purchased the music from and tell them you need the selections again.. and give them your card.. (Remember earlier I mentioned they stored your ID number and music selection) and then they could give you back ALL of your music at not cost to you - Providing the card you give them has the same ID number that they have in their system.
I am not saying this is fool proof, as nothing is! But I believe this would satisfy everyone and put music distribution back to what it was in the days of cassettes.
This concept could also be used for dvd and game purchases also.
Any thoughts?
Oh and btw.. IF this would be used.. I hereby announce this MY idea on this day 11/11/2001;)
Hey! - You never know!
I can only imagine the line of adult geared games that will be released with 'Glove Technology' capabilities. I hope it comes with an optional velvet lined palm.
arena will never be the same. I believe I remember another article that ran on/. very recently concerning VR in gaming with body sensors and tredmills.
If we could replace the tredmills with entire rooms fitted with floor sensors, it would seem that the near future holds a new level of VR gaming where you will no longer be sitting behind the computer... but rather inside a Star Trek holo-deck
Specifically allowing businesses and residents to allocate percentages of their bandwidth to opposing buildings/households and reducing their own costs. Possibly even allowing passing motorists with roaming uplinks to their own central servers.
I haven't crunched actual numbers, but I can only guess that that would allow for everyone to have wireless access for an extremely nominal fee and provide the ability for additional redundancy.
Though I don't beleive I'd ever totally do away with a hard line (whether it be phone or cable)
Though almost all of us don't like the fact that music will be encrypted and that cd's will more than likely become non-playable on desktops. I DO like that this gives the artist the power to choose. The recording labels would surely lock down everything they record.
Giving the artist the right to choose may hopefully open a few doors and open the eyes of other artist that choose to encrypt their work; making them aware that restricting their music is NOT the answer.
I still strongly believe that peer to peer software such as Napster increased record sales (and I believe I remember reading articles that backed up those theories).
IMHO giving the individual artist this 'permission to choose' make actually turn into the metaphoric light at the end of the tunnel. Just my 2 pennies! - HSJ
An even more possible threat of this would be the after marketing.
If a hacker to access the Gov systems, extract the information they wanted and then with the increasingly more intelligent virii/worms being developed, attach the information to a worm and set it loose in the wild. The virii/worm wouldn't even need to be malicious. Imagine the ramifications of someone obtianing 'real' govermental Area 51 information or President Kennedy assasination cover-up documentation and distibuting it.
The information alone could cause a government break down from within the US and distrust in our leaders.
The potential problems of anything less then an A+ could be severe! - Henry Smith
I would assume 'illegal' to mean "...against agency policy..." The employee most likely took personal responsibilty of counter-attacking a supposed hacker instead of reporting to the proper departmental channels. In which case (if it were a real hacker and not an internal test hack) the employee could have compromised more of the system or tipped off the hacker that they were noticed causing them to leave and the security department having to deal with the remains of a hack rather then monitoring and tracing a live/current hack. Or causing the hacker to freak and cover his found tracks radically by taking down entire systems.
I too would have been interested in knowing the guidlines for these grades. Prior to 9/11/01 it is possible that the systems were looked at in a much less crucial manner, whereas after 9/11/01 those reviewing the systems may have been much more critical. This causing the grades to drop when the systems actually remained at the same level of security. - Henry Smith
Environmentalist's concern about the ozone layer and the hole in the atmosphere brought about the end to natural CFC's (freon) being used throughout the world. Whether that was over-reacting has really yet to be seen, but when the volcano in the Phillipines erupted it was reported that more CFC's poured into the air than the U.S. could in a hundred years. Making the amount used in the U.S. miniscule in comparison to a single volcano. Though there is no doubt that the U.S. was polluting through frivolous use of CFC's. Even with conflicting environmental and scientific reports the ban was put in place, with great suspicion, as to it being an effective tool to prevent depletion of the ozone layer.
The DuPont Chemical Company had already developed and patented safer synthetic freons, at 10 times the costs to consumers prior to the ban being imposed. - David Icke
IMHO Mother Nature takes care of herself. Fires to clean the earth, wind to sweep away the garbage, seasons to refresh the vibrance of life and so forth...
This article suggests that though the total mass of the hole is reducing in size, it is also maintaining itself for longer periods. Without research, an immediate assumption would suggest that this would be letting the same doses of UV rays reach the earth annually.
I'd say Mother Nature is attemtping to counteract our efforts and regulate the earth the way she has done for millions of years!
And given our (human) track record.. I'd give 1000:1 odds in favor of Mother Nature doing the right thing.

I hereby announce this MY idea on this day 11/11/2001
Hey! - You never know!
I can only imagine the line of adult geared games that will be released with 'Glove Technology' capabilities. I hope it comes with an optional velvet lined palm.
arena will never be the same. I believe I remember another article that ran on /. very recently concerning VR in gaming with body sensors and tredmills.
If we could replace the tredmills with entire rooms fitted with floor sensors, it would seem that the near future holds a new level of VR gaming where you will no longer be sitting behind the computer... but rather inside a Star Trek holo-deck
That would be nice!
