  1. Re:A couple notes on Perpetual Motion Delorean? · · Score: 1

Yeah i agree but the speeds arent really all that much, compared to say nascar, irl etc. The radius of the turn isnt that tight,I would bet that there is less lateral force (maybe even downforce) than a right turn at an intersection taken at around 20... although i might be way off i am not actually doing any real calculations. but yeah all in all the car is old and prone to breaking at this point, although it might have been taken care of considering it is still worth a decent amount. b

  2. A couple notes on Perpetual Motion Delorean? · · Score: 1

First off, The article says that the banked trak is much harder on the suspention, because it was not designed for that, I dont really by it. The banking of the track would help to reduce the lateral load on the bearings because the force would be diverted downward somewhat, so the car would just seem heavier from the suspention's point of view. The radius of the turn is not that great either so the lateral load on the bearings would not be substantially greater than driving strait. Of course the car is old so it is plauseable that the bearings could go out in a test like this, although I would not think that it has anything to do with the test conditions, just that it is old. Given the explaination, it seems like a cop out, like they planned for the bearings to "go out" during thier test so they would not have to prove thier technology. This sounds an awful lot like the guy who said that he had created a way to send data through power lines because he "bypassed the transformer". That guy gave no information on how it was capable of being done but he made a lot of money selling his idea to investors. He never did actually complete a demo because there was always some new problem.

on another note though I did not see anywhere in the description where it stated that the car was perpetual motion so it might actually be some other innovation, although the lack of details bothers me, I think that if this where not a hoax that maybe the guy doesnt have a patent.

I would be vey interested to see a licensing agreement go to court... The way I understand it both parties of a legally binding contract must understand the contract in order for it to be valid, sooo it would be my guess that most of these agreements/contracts would be invalid due to the fact that most people are not lawers and would not be able to understand the agreement even if they did read it.

Aside from the fact that many newer cars have the same computing power, if not more, than my first PC. The way one would go about fixing a car or a computer, or at least learning how to fix it is the same. Fixing cars though, I think, is easier than computers. I know a great deal about both and for the most part cars a mechanical and I can see what is going on, all I need to understand is simple physics. Computers on the other hand require a lot more knowledge/experience to diagnose. Such as if I have a soundcard that is not working there can be any number of problems (somtimes known by the manufacturer) weather it is a compatability issue, software problem or harware failure it is not always easy to tell and often requires a good deal of testing to track down what exactly the problem is. On a car though it is much easier to figure the problem out. If somthing is broke then what part is it, I look at it, then I know- not like I am almost certain- but I know that part needs to be replaced. So I go to the auto parts store (calling first of course) get the part I need, look at it before I leave the store and determine right then and there weather or not it is exactly the part that I need. no guessing at ambiguous product descriptions, just simply visual comparision.

I've never actually seen p2p been used for anything like configuration files but it might be useful.

I was thinking it might be somewhat useful if you could trade XF86config files so that someone that has a certain graphics card or wants to use thier mouse to do something special, they could use someone else's config files to figure out how they do something.
That is just an example though, but i am sure there is other stuff that you may have on your computer that you have customized or made that may be useful to you but not really worth going to the trouble to post it on a website and create a page for it.
Another thing might also be source code for very small simple programs that don't do much or even anything productive at all but may be useful as an example to someone that is just starting out in programming to figure out how to make a gui.
Although I think that one thing that would really make p2p much more useful for this sort of thing is some sort of searchable file description (that could store more than the name could).
Just some thoughts, anyone else agree?

  15. Really a bad idea on Napster Introduces Subscription Charge · · Score: 1

I dont really think that charging users is all that great of an idea. There are still alot of honest people out there, like myself, that do feel somewhat bad about downloading music from some bands. Most of the bands that I listen to are not all that well known, although I can still find thier music on napster. If I download thier music without paying a dime I feel like they should get some money for it, and alot of times I download thier music so that I can hear it before I buy it, If I dont think it is worthy of my money then It is probably not worth listening too.
If I have to pay to download it weather it be the 99 cents per track from emusic or the subscription charge through napster, I am not going to go out and buy the cd because I have already paid for the music once. Ill just download the album plus other songs and burn it to cd. I dont really think that the bands are going to be seeing any of that money from the napster subscription service, because record companies will find anyway they can to screw the artist. Such as the emusic.com scenario, The bands may or may not get the 50% of sales that Emusic.com says that they are giving to the artist. I know of at least one band that has thier music on emusic.com and doesnt see a dime of the money that thier record companie makes, because it was not in thier contract. I can only assume that record companies will find a way to get out of paying thier artist the money from napster.
Another problem with charging subscription fees is that the people who are giving up bandwidth and computer time are not the record companies or even napster but the customers. Why should I pay to allow someone else to use my bandwidth.
Although I do think that this is somewhat a step in the right direction I do not think that it is actually the correct step to make, but who knows I guess that we will have to just wait and see.

Do you relize who runs the projectors in most theaters? Its mostly kids that really dont care about the quality of the presentation- just that its on the screen and going the right direction. I know what a movie should look like when its exibited properly and Ill tell ya that is not what I see in most theaters that I go to most of the time the film is out of focus, slightly out of frame. Its rare when you can tell that the film is being presented as it should. If it were a digital projector the movie would never be out of focus because there would be very litte moving parts and unless someone screws with the lens there is no reason for anything in the light path to change.

  18. Re:I hate this on Digital Movies and The Big Screen · · Score: 1

I wasnt really stating my opinion completly... Just pointing out the reasoning behind moving to digital projectors. I my opinion I think that not only will it be a while before a digital projector will be able to give film a good run for its money in the area of picture quality, but I also think that film being one of the few analog media formats left adds a little bit to the movie with scratches and dust (imho).
As for keeping projectionists around, the ones that work for me hardly do anything aside from threading and building up. When something breaks I am usually the one that gets the great pleasure of fixing it. I wouldn't trust my projectionists to change a xenon bulb... maybe some do but this is my situation and if all that had to happen was pop a disk in and press start then they could go...
I am not knocking film, I am just saying that digital projectors would make it a helluva lot easier for exibitors...

  19. Re:I hate this on Digital Movies and The Big Screen · · Score: 1

If you guys are having trouble understanding why the film industry is trying to move to a digital projection system. It is not because of better picture quality and it is not neccesarily to created a better the experience for the audience. The three biggest reasons that I can see is film storage, cut in cost in film delivery and a lower operation cost for theaters. I am a manager at a movie theater and a large chunk of money is paid to our projectionists every two weeks, about a grand. And there is a lot more we could do with that money if we didnt have to pay those projectionists.
another reason, is because of the degradation of the film after a relitivly short amount of time, after about two or three weeks the film is covered with dust and scratches. Not to mention a couple of weeks ago we ran the original friday the 13th and it was really bad. the film was one of the original films that was released and was extremely brittle, it was covered in scratches, the color had faded slightly. If friday the 13th had been stored in a digital format then there would have been no degradation due to time, just the same shitty movie that the creators wanted us to see.
As far as film delivery goes. do you have any idea how difficult and cumbersom a single print of film is -about 50 pounds. now try and ship 2000 prints or more every week and the costs start to add up quite a bit im sure. so it would be much easier to send a dvd or even laserdisc size package to every theater that will be showing a film. As far as broadcasting the films via sattalite or whatever, I dont think that will ever happen. what happens if a film needs to be started late?

I hardly think that thier stock price alone shows what kind of position a company is in. The reason that thier stock price has gone down is due to the fact that they have been spending alot of money buying and investing in companies. and the more money a company spends the more their stock drops in price- ever notice how many companies' stock prices drop sharply after an aquisition? I completely disagree with thought that corel is going under- i think the exact opposite thier office suite is one of the few suites that can directly compete with microsoft office and is not only a player now but has been for quite a while. Wordperfect has been around for a long long time longer than word and is the editor of choice for many many people that write (letters, legal documents, ect.,) in many offices around the world- anyway back to the point corel is starting to make linux more accessable and a better option to offices that do not need to run servers and are not neccessarily tech. oriented This puts corel in a pretty nice market position- they have an already established product (WordPerfect office suite) they have an established name they have good software they have the only office suite for linux that has been around for over ten years they also have alot of linux companies and spin offs that they own a good portion of they spun off NetWinder to rebel.com and kept 25% of rebel.com at the beggining of the year they bought 30% of OE/ONE.com (they manufacture a linuxweb appliance) they aquired 10% of simply.com and 30% of newlix and this has all been in the last 6 months anyway I really dont think that corel is going to tank- I think that corel might be a good investment...
