But the time slot will not increase in value if nobody watches the commercials during that time slot. That is the way that the networks make money, so if they are certain that the people watching have tivos and are just skipping the commercials, then the time slot is still a waste for them.

hate speech is not protected to begin with. It can, and in many cases, will be censored.

How exactly do you define hate speech? what would you say is and is not hate speech? Would you say that hate speech includes anything that degrades a particular group of people or individuals, so could you say that, if I stated "I hated enron's executives and wish they would die horrible deaths"... is that wrong? I think most people think that they are bad people and would not argue against me (maybe, but that is not the point) so does that mean that hate speech is only protected if the majority of people agree with it. What about if I post hate speech against the KKK or simialar groups?

I really don't see how you can say that "hate" speech is not protected. Although I am seriously wondering what exactly you mean by your comment and who or where is not protecting hate speech.

The problem is maintenance. It can cost you a big deal of money to keep the flywheel in the working condition

That is actually not true - this company's flywheels are housed in a vacuum and moving parts have no contact (the actual flywheel is suspended with magnets). Hence, there is very little or no maintenance considering that there is very little chance for wear to occur. The only maintinance that would ever be needed is in the event of a catastrophic failure, which would require complete replacement, although, considering that the design is very simple this is not likely to happen - barring outside interfernce, such as an earthquake or something like that. I read about these a while ago, and, if I remember correctly the company would gauruntee them for 50 years, even though they believed they would last longer.

  17. Why is payment an issue AND why no concession on Low Cost Cinema Through Dynamic Pricing · · Score: 2, Insightful

AFAIK film distributors charge based on a fixed ticket price, I am not sure exactly what that is but I think it is around 6.50 or 7.00 and the theaters are allowed to charge whatever they want, so long as they pay the agreed upon percentage of the preset ticket price. So if a theater charges 4.00 for a ticket they will still be required to pay the distributor like 60% of 6.50. The percentage varies but the base ticket price will remain the same. If this is the case, which I am fairly certain that it is, then I do not understand why this would be an issue unless easyCinema is only willing to pay based on the actually purchase price of each individual ticket. Granted, they would have to charge a much higher price closer to show time to make up the difference.

And another note, easyCinema is not going to have a concession stand, while that does seem to be the model for how they do business - require as few people as humanly possible. Concession stands have such a large profit margin, its not even funny. For example a 35 lb bag of popcorn kernels costs about 10.00 (it is about the size of a medium size bag of dog food) and then a theater can turn around and sell a (large) bag of popped popcorn for 5.00 (or even more, sometimes). A bag of kernels will yeild well over 100 (large) popcorns, so, you do the math. It really does not seem smart to me to discontinue the concession stand all together, maybe things are different in the UK though

I got to see a exhibitor screening last friday, and, to put it simply, The Matrix Reloded was the first movie that I wanted to watch again immediatly after it ended. The other people I was with also agreed that it was an increadibly good movie, not only for the action (which it seems nobody is debating) but I thought the story was really good also, and brought up some interesting points of discussion. And that alone is light years more than most summer blockbuster films.
The reviewer seems to be saying that reloaded would be a terrible movie if it were not for its action, I can only think that the reviewer is an idiot, or maybe he just didnt understand the film.
As I was talking to one of my boss, after the movie, he didnt seem to think that it would do very well (boxoffice wise) because most people would not understand some of the more complex issues that the film touched on.
There was a lot of reference to the inner workings of computer systems, very vauge references - but they were there none the less. I cannot really elaborate without giving too much away, but I am sure that a lot of the /. crowd will catch on some of the stuff.

I must say though, do not get discouraged- this is an awesome film! there are also a number of reviews on aint-it-cool-news.com

A professor at my school wrote a language called jboxes, it has the same basic design as java- it is a actually some sort of extention to java but all the programming is done using a gui where boxes are moved around and connections added. I myself have never used it but it looks neat, he gave a class that I was in a demo shortly after he finished. It looked like it might have helped me in some of my first cs classes, although I did not have that much trouble.

Anyway the point of creating Jboxes was to help students who had trouble with OOP and writing code, Jboxes takes away the problems of syntax to help new cs students understand the structure of programming and think of the design instead of getting hung up on syntax problems.

I could not seem to find a page dedicated to jboxes on his website but he does have the executables and pdf files(for his classes) at http://clem.mscd.edu/~shultzj/190kf02/
