So my coworker tells me of his kid at college, that the university has a internet2 connection. He tells stories of pulling down whole movies in 10minutes.
My BS to this is... these are public universities funded with my TAX DOLLARS. While I was in school, you could get suspended and possibly expelled for abusing the computing systems (downloading pr0n, running a MUDD).
I'm sorry but how does downloading Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy on DVD constitute the correct use of a universities network let alone internet2?
So if you look at what the internet2 is supposed to be http://www.internet2.edu/about/ you'll see such reasons for the internet2 as:
* Create a leading edge network capability for the national research community
* Enable revolutionary Internet applications
* Ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community.
Where does "Trade Maroon5 CDs" fit under this? Sounds like they (the universities and the leadership of the internet2 group) should be cracking down on these guys.
I sure am glad that our government for who I just paid a huge sum of $$$ in taxes, is spending it on this instead of...
-Fixing Roads -Increasing Eductional spending -Finding alternative fuels -Feeding the homeless -Ending the war in Iraq -Curing disease -Feeding Africa -Keeping jobs from going overseas -Fixing MS TCP/IP stack -Preventing Firestations from closing. -Getting Arnold out of the governors office so we can finish the BayBridge.
I guess sh!t like this is good for a sound bite, but in the grand scheme of things the RIAA/movie studios should be able to fix this problem on their own. Isn't that the beauty of capitalism?
[Hillary Clinton] wants a $90 million investigation to be launched
Who are they paying with this money? Do you really need $90million worth of research on this topic? Classrooms are overcrowded, people are going hungry, teachers are underpaid... the deficit is going up...
Isn't there something more important to go after than this? This is EXACTLY what Bush did during the election by making gay marriage the issue of the election instead of the economy...
All she's doing is grandstanding to get elected by the rightwing while calling herself a leftwing democrat.
I'm not playing Solataire... I'm studying the Terrorism Deck of Cards...

If it ain't broken, don't fix it. If an OS/2 based laptop is getting the job done, and there is no value add or return on your investment in running a windows/linux on these laptops... is it really worth it? Plus remember, when a new version of Z/OS comes out, it must support ALL the features of previous versions... the ultimate in backwards compatibility.
These laptops run Communications Manager which in some of its abilities can emulate a 3270 terminal.. (yeah tn3270 does the same thing...)
Let's see... Teachers aren't paid enough, so while a child is growing up, they are bombarded with images of money, possessions and other *bling* by TV and celebrites who are otherwise uneducated (anybody think that the actors/actresses/singers are college grads?). So these children see these images and want professions that pay well enough to buy this crap. Teacher isn't one of them.
Sure being a teacher is a honorable profession, but it barely pays the bills. My mother has been a teacher for 20yrs and I made more than her after 3 years as an engineer. She made have taught over 400 students in her career, and how is it that I make more than her? How many doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers have resulted from passing through her class?
If you pay the teachers more, then you'll have more people WANTING to become teachers which will increase the quality of those who teach..
Y'know we used to take pride in "Made In America" whether it be clothes or cars. Odd how we'd rather outsource to another country employing 1000s in the foreign country so a few (read: execs) in American can prosper.
If the US is turning into more of a consumer based economy by importing more and less of a producer/exporter, then where does our income come from? What will these countries by from us besides food?
Have you ever run a large backup operation? I'm not referring to a few tape drives, but say a hundred LTO tape DRIVES, and you're backing up almost a PetaByte a month? Some of those tapes have SEC regulations mandating that you keep them around for 7-10years? That's ALOT of tapes...
I may be using LTO now, but 10years AGO i was using DLT-1.... That's alot of tapes... in a dead technology. Especially since an LTO tape drive of today cannot read a DLT tape of 10years ago.
Stick with microfiche, film, that way we don't have to pay some vendor $$$/yr to keep alive a dead technology or pay some other vendor $$$/media to move them from old to new media.
As a Coke employee, if I brought a pepsi product to work (say as part of my brown bag lunch), it's looked down on pretty harshly. It's almost to the point of being grounds for termination. It's not just a can of pepsi soda, but any of Pepsi's brands (chips, snacks, fruit juices etc...).
Yeesh, you would have thought the kid would atleast have worn long sleaves and a face mask (welding mask)... They did this on Mythbusters and the fragments when into the human flesh like gel about 2inches...
Ok, I've been a long time reader of/. but give me a break, this is *NOT* news. If you play a Steam authored game, then you are already aware of this. If you aren't a player of Steam authored games (like me), then this article is a waste.
With all the great advances in technology... 10Gb, wireless (not just Linksys and building apartment wireless networks for you neighbors), storage advances (iSCSI, Virtualization, disk based backups via serialATA).
It's a shame that we have to revert to 'status of video game servers'
Remember the kind in '94 that was caned in Singapore for Chewing Gum (or was it Vandalism..) and President Clinton had to ask the gov't to lesson the penalty....
Caning is real... hope you've got thick pants.
Go ahead and break their laws... you'll be on the 6pm News here in the states... with your pants around your ankles..
Maybe its sexy to think about Jobs and Woz and Hewlett and Packard... but this valley was started because companies like IBM were already here...
Remember, in the 50s IBM invented the Hard Drive in the Silicon Valley http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_drive#History The historic site has since been sold to HDS who in turn wants to turn it into upscale shopping and condos.
So, how safe is this stuff if your house catches fire? Previously we had some form of latex paint putting fumes into the air... now a copper laced paint tossing its fumes up? Dunno about that one.
Why not just build sheetrock with a wire mesh built into it?
Most of the comedy movies today can't hold a candle to the Marx Brothers.... and those guys didn't have to make rude comments about somebodies "mother sitting around the house..."
While growing up my parents got the daily newspaper. Fast-forward to now and I've got my own house and I don't buy a newspaper. Why? I can get the news quicker by going to espn.com or yahoo's news site.
I think what we're seeing here is an entire generation that will *NOT* be buying newspapers. I don't even get a subscription to sportsIllustrated which was something I did while growing up.
Looks like the print industry in general may be running into this problem that their audience doesn't want to wait for tomorrow to get today's news. Maybe if all news sites required me to pay (like NYTIMES) but then I'd just find another one (why do I have to pay to read a site AND still get advertisements in the page....

Prior to it's IPO in 2000 StorageNetworks was sued by EMC b/c of StorageNetworks' tagline:
The Enterprise Storage Service Provider.
EMC's tagline was:
The Enterprise Storage Provider.
Storagenetworks IPO'd at $93/share and 2.5yrs later was run into the ground by its management.

All this is is a method to line some guy's pockets. I'm sure the tape guys are gonna say, use XYZ type of tape. The disk guys are gonna say disk.
What makes this guy think that the interface to the HDD is going to be around in X years?
PC's have only had two dead (non-(e)IDE/ATA) interfaces, the ESDI and the ST506/ST-412 interfaces.
But what if you were trying to find a computer with IPI (1960s mainframe) interface.
The Fed gov't has this problem with trying to find parts for their old 8/9track tape drives..
Here's a good list of all the HDD interfaces over the years: http://www.i-t-s.com/corporate/terms.html

Why would it be legal for me to share my bandwidth?
