Nonsense! Manhattan has a plethora of alternatives. There are the friendly, courteous, safety-oriented taxis. Or you could take a leisurely bike ride through the city streets, confident that every driver will be keeping an eye on you to ensure your safety. Then again, you can always bring your car into the city, and experience the relaxation of a Monday morning jaunt through the pristine thoroughfares, confident that the traffic will never overwhelm you.
Agreed. The opposition to Tito's flight from the slashdot crowd is mainly jealousy that they didn't have a chance to do the same thing. The opposition from the NASA crowd is over the fact that someone from outside their little clique had the gall to get himself up there. Bunch of overbearing elitists with square haircuts who forget who pays their salaries; space was supposed to be opened up for everyone, not just them.
The ironic thing is Tito is a former NASA engineer, with the same background as the many of the other astronauts.
I'm always surprised at the number of geeks or opensource types that purchase a Microsoft product just to hack it to make it do something in the linux world. You're supporting Microsoft still whether you like it or not.
What I'M surprised about is how these l33t hax0rs suddenly get all enraged when their modded boxes lose functionality. It's actually kind of amusing.
Given that Jefferson famously said that the tree of liberty needed to be watered by the blood of revolution every twenty years, it is not crazy to argue that the founding fathers intended for people to have funs so that they could overthrow a government that attempted to take away their freedom.
You know, I tracked down that quote and found something rather interesting. 20 years after he wrote it he was President. Wonder if he felt that there should be a revolution under his watch, or had he changed his mind at that point.
Of course, anyone who has lived in a continually revolting country could tell you of the horrors of frequent revolts...
I'm not sure if we should carry out nanotech research or not, but I do know that if we do we'd better be careful as hell. Of course, this being slashdot there will be plenty of posters screaming "LUDDITES" and urging unrestrained nanoengineering, but fortunately those types rarely hold elected office.
The main reason I agree with the report, is that the alternative (such as Bill Joys) would be a totaltarian police state with omni-surveillance everywhere to prevent rouge nanotech development.
Right, that's EXACTLY what Bill Joy suggested. Totalitarian police state. Right.
There are no doubt many other providers that would love to have you.
The funny thing is, no there aren't.
Hear me out.
If you're the kind of user who downloads a gig a day, runs a web server, a MUD, a webcast radio station, and several sessions of KaZaA, the providers don't want you. They'd much rather do without your 30 or 40 dollars or whatever you spend a month than have to spend more providing you with bandwidth and technical support. To them you're more trouble than you're worth, and if by instituting a cap they lose you, well that's the price they're willing to pay.
Calm down. Damn, hope you aren't this angry with your kids, that could really mess them up emotionally...

Many people don't own cars there, because of hard to find parking. And when you don't own a car, buying groceries in mass quantities is difficult, not to mention time consuming.
Believe me, in New York, even when you DO have a car, you never use it because you don't want to lose your parking place.

And I'm uncomfortable with the fact that they genetically engineered a living creature to come down with a horrific disease.
Oh god, not another Tesla thread...
Three Gorges Damn - before they close it up.
"Before they close it"? Is that a euphemism for "Before the dam breaks, causing unbelievable amounts of damage and human suffering"?

there's no one living in Hilbert spaces that it could upset, but I could be wrong.
Isn't that where Hilbert lives?
Anyone else remember Badlands of Hark?
You talking about Salon or Slashdot?
You said Ok, most people who enjoy Miles enjoy Honor.
Funny, I like both -- a lot, but I'd have never guessed there were a lot more like me. Go figure.
You obviously don't read rec.arts.sf.written. It seems that Bujold and Weber are all that people talk about sometimes.
Personally I dislike military sf, so it's all noise to me, but I'm definitely in a minority there...
Guess the question has been answered. Most slashdot posters are anti-environmentalists.
Not too hard to fake.
Step 1) Buy this.
Step 2) Put lunar lander sticker on lens.
Depending on their income and technological proficiency, I'd either point them at Dell or http://resellerratings.com.

f they have this large and loyal a following, why was this show canceled?
Because loyal does not necessarily equal large.

This isn't a computer game, you don't necessarily get better results by allocating scientists like that.
Obligatory Penny Arcade reference.

No, I'm not joking.
What ever happened to boycotting.
It doesn't work.
Wouldn't the lawsuit fees be better spent switching from M$ products?
No.
But how many people actually fixed their machines? I decided to study this question, and the results are kind of depressing.
If you're depressed by that, you might want to see a psychiatrist. I mean, you shouldn't have that kind of reaction to such a minor issue.
