For $100 million dollars, a lot of people have talked about buying existing textbooks for education, but what about using the money to start the creation of new ones that are designed from the ground up in the wiki format.
I think it would make sense to hire professionals to perform edits and create base models for textbooks for classes in specific fields which could then be edited as needed perhaps with keeping some sort of professional editorial oversight.
True, that kind of torque is nothing to sneeze at, but the last Hummer I drove topped out at around 80 MPH, and even that was a terrifying experience. Hummers are decent tow vehicles if you don't mind something that large, but for any sort of long hauling there are cheaper and better solutions.
The fact that anyone would want one of these things as a daily driver is a total joke. They handle, accelerate, brake, and guzzle diesel like no other civiian vehicle.
That said, the H2 is an even bigger joke since it sacrifices the ground clearance, reliability, sheer power, and ruggedness of the Hummer, but doesn't make for a better ride at all.
Too bad, Gerry Studds was having consensual sex with someone rather than sending unwanted harrassing messages to people.
Having sex with a coworker, wether it be gay, straight, or whatever is not a crime. Making unwanted advances in the manner of Mark Foley is a crime.
This is the same problem that we were seeing in the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal and just about any sex scandal involving a public servant. People focus on the sexual side of the issue when that is the least poignant aspect of the situation. Clinton's problem wasn't that he had sex, but that he lied about it. Foley's problem wasn't that he had a relationship with one of his pages, but that he made repeated unwelcome advances toward them. Getting head in the Oval office or being a closeted gay are not crimes, Lying under oath and sexual harrassment are.
First of all, DVD media and downloadable iTunes movie content are not in the same market really. DVDs are made to be played on DVD players and have much higher resolution, but cannot be ripped and put on an iPod or other portable video player (yeah, I know. it is possible, but impractical for most people). Conversely, movies downloaded from the iTMS are of a significantly lower resolution than a DVD, cannot easily be played on a DVD player, and lack special features common on DVDs, but you can play them on a portable video player. Big box stores are assuming that people who buy a DVD will not buy a movie download and vice-versa. This doesn't seem correct really. If somebody wants to play their digital download on a real screen, they will still pretty much have to buy a DVD. Also, if somebody wants to watch a video on their portable device, they pretty much have to buy the digital download. People will buy both if they want to, but I'm sure if ripping DVDs was made easier there would be little to no effect on DVD sales by allowing digital downloads. Those who want to buy a DVD will not be dissuaded from doing so by the availability of a digital download, nor will those who only buy a download have been likely to buy a DVD in the first place.
The difference is that Myspace and News Corp. are attempting to beat Youtube by making deals with record labels and other content providers, but Youtube relies primarily on user submitted work.
"A theocracy that needs nukes certainly has a faith problem. "
What about a theocracy (Iran) which is situated rather near a theocracy which already has nukes and has refused to sign non-proliferation treaties or allow inspection of its nuclear program(Israel)? http://www.fas.org/nuke/guide/israel/nuke/
If the United States would like Iran to stop trying to arm itself, maybe we should stop arming their neighbors.
I know this is slashdot and nobody will RTFA, but they are going after a company that is (it seems) trying to associate itself with the iPod in order to gain credibility. Their trademarked software is called "myPodder" and they are also applying for a trademark for "podcast ready". I tried out their program for a while and it basically works like the podcast features in iTunes, but not quite as nice. Personally, I don't think that myPodder is a very good name for the software. This software has little to do with the 'Pod' part of podcasting, but everything to do with the casting part. I think something like "myPodcaster" would be a better name as it more accurately describes what the software does and further differentiates it from Apple's offerings. The "podcast ready" thing is kind of lame IMO. It doesn't seem to really step on Apple's toes too much, but they're all up in arms about it, and it seems like a kind of silly thing to attempt to trademark. The readiness of software or hardware to deal with the RSS/audio of a podcast is not unique to any program, nor IMO, the company should change the name of their software, but still be able to use the term "podcast ready" without it being trademarked.
I don't think this is even close to the limit of what an IMAX camera is capable of. I think 30 megapixels is enough resolution to be finer than 35mm film grain allows, but IMAX is even more fine and offers better color to boot.
"1/2400 as much data as can be fit on today's largest capacity 1-inch hard drives"
Really now, that is almost completely uninformative since most people have no idea what the capacity is of today's largest 1 inch hard drive. I know that it is cool and all how much storage has shrunk, but I think just saying 8 megs (or whatever the storage capacity was) tells people more than saying a fraction of an obscure unit.
Lithium ion and Lithium Polymer batteries have a finite number of charge/discharge cycles. Any laptop computer owner can tell you this, and most of the time, those batteries alone cost well over a hundred dollars.
I would like to submit an application for the position of CEO of your company. I have no experience or qualifications, but honestly how can I be any worse than Carly Fiorina or Patricia Dunn. I promise that in my time as CEO I will line my own pockets with cash from the company's coffers, "Change the company's direction and focus" several times to make it seem that I am really doing something positive for the company, and maybe even pull some sort of shady shit to make the stock price go up a little bit. I can assure you HP, I am the man for the job. If you are really stuck on the whole female executive thing (Chairwoman is not a word), I know some doctors who could totally make it happen.
I just recently kicked my WoW habit, but if you have a mighty mouse and do not configure the middle mouse to a specific key command, it will do the job of holding both mouse 1 and 2 in order to run. My problem with the mighty mouse is that the right click takes some getting used to to do consistently.
I really cannot see what is so newsworthy about this. GPS based governor devices are an old idea, and more simple systems have been available for many years. In fact, it seems like a GPS wouldn't be the best system to use for this since the car already has a device in place to measure its speed. Also, if the GPS is calculating speed based on an observed change in position over a known time, it may not be able to really capture the true speed of the car. I could see switchback and country roads being especially rough on this kind of system due to the constantly changing direction.
Steve Jobs: The numbers all go to nine. Look, right across the board, nine, nine, nine and... apple fanboi: Oh, I see. And most mp3 players go up to ten? Steve Jobs: Exactly. apple fanboi: Does that mean it's quieter? Is it any quieter? Steve Jobs: Well, it's one quieter, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where? apple fanboi: I don't know. Steve Jobs: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? apple fanboi: Put it up to nine. Steve Jobs: Nine. Exactly. One quieter. apple fanboi: Why don't you just make ten quieter and make ten be the top number and make that a little quieter? Steve Jobs: [pause] These go to nine.
Only use lower isolation headphones in a quiet environment and higher isolation headphones in a louder environment.
That means ditch the crappy earbuds. Go with an in ear monitor such as the etymotic er6, Shure E2c or anything by Ultimate ears for listening in a loud environment. By having 20+ db of isolation, you can listen to music much more quietly while still getting better detail.
>> Ok, so does that mean that cuckoos and cowbirds are not "lifeforms"?
No, Cuckoos and cowbirds have all the needed apparatus for procreation. Viruses on the other hand generally require the transcriptional "machinery" of a host cell in order to reproduce.
Some people consider viruses to be the most complex thing which doesn't live, while others say it is the least comlex living thing.
I say they're non living due to their lack of respiration, complete reproductive apparatus, and lack of a cell membrane of any sort.
The ATI card that supports EFI booting identifies itself as a UGA card rather than VGA. Chances are, once there are EFI based ATI drivers they should work though.
