  1. Malware targeting users with iTunes accts? on Game Maker Says 40% of iTunes In-App Buys Are Fraud · · Score: 1

It seems that most of the complaints for compromised iTunes accounts come from areas with high rates of piracy or malware infections. I wonder how much this of this comes from keyloggers or Trojans in pirated software / questionable web sites. It may be that there are app developers that work with malware developers who target iTunes accts because it may go un-noticed longer than blatant credit card or identity theft.

I believe in global warming, but at the same time, for the lamp in my bedroom for reading at night, my eyes prefer an incadecent bulb to the light that even a good CFL gives out. I also live in Wisconsin and we need a bulb for outside that will actually work when you flip on the switch. I don't need them for 90 percent of my house, but for those two areas, I am stockpiling them so that can enjoy nighttime reading, and I can see where I am going in winter. With CFCs directly leading to the ozone hole, I can see what a government ban was needed. Now for light bulbs, not all energy that we use contributes to global warming. I pay extra on my bill to help support renewable energy, andh use CFLs in every room but the garage and my bedroom lamp. I do not think that I am being irresponsible for this use. I think that the political party I typically support has gone overboard with this, and it should be overturned, just like when Chicago tried to limit certain types of food.

If you would have told me that Jake and the Fat Man would be on DVD two years ago, I would have laughed. Now it is. What you would be doing is impacting future earnings. It is a companies right to not distribute something that they paid for and created. While you might not like that, it is true. If a company makes a movie that they do not like and don't distribute it, which has happened before, that does not mean that it is ok to pirate it. It is a buisness calculation to not release it and whatever happens for the company, be it good or bad is the companies problem. Since music and TV and movies are not a necessity, I don't see why there is this arguement that it is ok to pirate or copy it. These things are not like recepies for bread, ways to get clean water or other things that are needed to sustain life. Tough shit if you can't get the music you want. I wanted to go to a concert earlier this year but the tickets were 80 dollars. That does not give me the right to sneak in for free. The same goes with DVDs and TV. Companies pay for these things throught investors on future earnings for movies or advertisements on tv. I am guessing the TV shows you download do not have the advertisements in them. While it has been declared legal to fast forward through them, it is still illegal to copy and distribute them without the ads. Life isn't fair, you don't deserve everything that you always want. I want a Porsche 911 Targa, but I don't have the money for it. I don't rail against the machine and complain that it is unfair that it is priced at 80-100k. Buck up and accept the facts. If you want to change them, go ahead, but that doesn't make it legal to go around what you do when you pirate or copy things. You are not saving or preserving human life, liberty or the persut of happyness when you download Family guy.

  13. Vintage Audio on Japan to Discourage Sale of Old Electronics · · Score: 5, Interesting

If you were to go over to Japan with an old Western Electric 300b Based tube amp, you could get thousands of dollars for it. An example of a Mcintosh MC 30 6l6 based amp going price in the US is around 600-1000 dollars per mono bock. If I were to take the amps over there, I could get 5-10k for a set. The same with Altec, JBL, Klipsch, Western electric speakers. This will hurt a huge tubed audio and vintage audio industry in Japan. Most of their high end audio gear is still tubed based, and they often love to use vintage caps, resistors, transformers, for they think they have better sound. Since Apple sells the software along with their new computer, that is not for purchase in a store, you either have to download the software illegally, or install the same software on multiple computers without a license for all of them. Both of them in both cases are illegal. So Apple wants to prevent people from downloading a pirated version of the software and running it on a computer that doesn't have a valid license? What is wrong with that? For the past 15 years I have been dealing with software that is not open source, installing the software on multiple computers with a single license is illegal, and there has never really been an arguement against it that holds up. They have every right to stop people from illegally pirating OS X or using the software on multiple machines, since Intel based 10.4 is not available for resale.
