I recently started working as an instructor for northface.edu, a school offering bachelor's and (soon) masters CS degrees, with emphasis on real-world stuff like dealing with clients, requirements analysis, design, etc., not just writing code. (Don't get me wrong; there's plenty of that.) It might be worth a look if you're curious.
I play almost exclusively RPG and adventure games and if I were to buy just one console now, in 2004, I would go with the xbox. KotOR is just soooo amazingly good. Then you have Shenmue 2 and Syberia at bargain prices, plus some others (Beyond Good and Evil) that are available for both platforms. And maybe Fable really will be the "best rpg ever" if it's ever actually released.:)
I do intend to get Xenosaga for PS2 when I get bored of KotOR but that won't be for quite some time.:)
MS could easily write extensions that require the win32 libraries to be present. Even if the changes to the SDK were released, you couldn't use them on any platform whose OS didn't provide the requisite MS libraries.
nothing against KOffice -- a few years ago it was the best of the open source office suites -- but with openoffice improving so fast now a desktop-specific suite seems unnecessary.
using Sprint Vision as a data line for your computer is now verbotten. So far they're mostly adopting a "don't ask, don't tell" policy towards the occasional infraction but they definitely dump anyone who tries to use it 24/7. How much is too much, nobody really knows.
They're targeting the enterprise market -- defined explicitly by Peren's whitepaper as (paraphrasing) the market that Red Hat gets $$$ in support fees for.
I just don't see companies who want that level of support settling for "here's our linux distro, and if you want support, uh... here's a list of 3rd party providers." Remember LinuxCare? They're still around, but only because they moved away from providing third-party support solutions.
about not using linux or a bsd kernel. then they'd get all the drivers for free that those projects have... think anyone's going to bother writing drivers for ANOTHER kernel with a fraction of the mindshare? dream on.
He even says in the interview that the kernel is one of the 2 areas most in need of development help. Wake up!...:(
The Bombardier EMBRIO Advanced Concept is a one-wheeled recreational and commuting vehicle that promises a whole new experience on the road. Aimed at the 18 to 45 age group, this advanced concept prefigures the kind of user-friendly, minimalist vehicles we might be seeing - and using - on our urban, suburban and country roads in the year 2025.
I don't think they're planning on starting mass production any time soon, guys.:P
Fritz has grandmasters working for them. They're not stupid and neither are the programmers...
Kasparov tried playing "anti-computer" chess against Deep Blue and got his butt handed to him. After losing to Deep Blue Kasparov really, Really, REALLY wants to beat Fritz (after helping hype him as "even better than Deep Blue"). If it were as simple as you describe, he wouldn't be wasting any time doing it now.
it says any target db will require stored functions ("but not triggers or procedures"). that kinda lets mysql out.
incidently they say that their first porting effort failed b/c "Compiere is using embedded transactions" which postgresql doesn't support. I think he means nested transactions which indeed no open source database supports yet... at least not postgresql or firebird or mysql.:(
you spend the entire review saying this book sucks more than not, and conclude "I wouldn't recommend it to anyone" but still give it an 8. I agree with the substance of the review, but wth, 8???
k5 seems to be in it's usual state these days right now (down) but when it's back up, check out the amusing poll they had a while ago. ("Most overrated geek icon.") Guess what won by a landslide? Hint: it's a cartoon.

Larry Wall never met a feature he didn't like. Ever. It just got to the point where he had to revamp his language's syntax to fit them all in. :P

knee-jerk "choice" replies will be ignored.

this guy is clueless or a troll. if clueless, it's simple to educate yourself about spf instead of trying to look smart when you aren't.
The SPF guys are pretty clueful. There's a large number of smart people who have spent a lot of thought on it; they haven't missed anything obvious.
hollywood made... hmm... 4 movies this year I wanted to see, and bollywood made... hmm... zero.
:)
so the movie ratio is 3 but the crap ratio is infinite! wow, sign me up!

you don't get it, do you? even after I spelled out for you that they _already_ don't have enough developer time on the kernel.
even on large projects, developer time is a finite resource. much more so for marginal projects like this one.

ebay it for cheap or find it somewhere else but YOU MUST PLAY IT.
You are aware, are you not, that MIT has more than a few undergraduates? And that among said undergraduates you may find some competent programmers?
most of the non-/.-reading public hasn't heard of froogle...

but it's the one I would buy if I had $300 to drop on a player to replace my rio 500.
design counts in consumer electronics. sony proved this years ago...
although slightly larger.
I might pay $300 for an ipod but I definitely wouldn't pay $260 for the dell.
ipod is smaller and sexier.
the dell dj (gah) is not as good-looking as the nomad zen nx let alone the ipod. Disappointing. :-|
here

I'm probably not the only one more interested in photos than in learning that it has a 3.6h charge time.
but if you read it carefully it just says the 1M are "by iTunes users," i.e. including existing Mac users.
