How so? I never saw basic things like a shredder or a stapler made of the same translucent/coloured plastic before the iMac, I really think it started the 'trend' if you will, and I anticipate the new one will do the same.

Funny, that's the first thing I thought of: how in the coming months we'll see new cheap/plastic PC cases with a glowing base. Then Apple will fire out the lawsuits against the manufactures, but eventually this will be the 'new look' just like the translucent colored plastic of the orginal iMac is reflected in my translucent blue paper shreader.

Give Apple props for putting out well designed (technically and asthetically) consumer devices. Now if they could just give me a low power g5 powerbook, while insisting that the Airport extreme chipset makers open source the drivers so we can get proper G support under Mac hardware in Linux. Until then, my G3 iBook is still tops!

  5. Excellent article on The Python Paradox, by Paul Graham · · Score: 2, Interesting

Paul's Python summation is brilliant. As a Perl programmer who is embracing Python programming (for interest in *learning a better tool*...), I found his article to be the single most useful document on the internet about getting started with Python. Comparing structures to other languages helped greatly.

By looking at the article I was able to quickly gauge the amount that I need to learn to learn basic Python... needless to say, it will not be a very far stretch. I am sure that I have a lot to learn, but this easily cut weeks of trial and error off of my learning curve. I can't thank him enough. I am excited.

Wow, I really appreciate your answer, thanks for taking the time. I agree, integration, things just "working together" are always more complete in Mandrake or SuSE (which some use at my work) but I actually enjoy the challenges of Gentoo, hunting down problems and fixing them. Portage isn't without it's (sometimes major) quirks, that's for sure. Witness the time I did an 'emerge world' on my build server, only to have it break ssh. Ok, it didn't break it, but after the emerge it wouldn't allow ssh connections until I did the etc-update! I didn't expect that, I did a world and planned on etc-update later, VIA ssh!

My background comes from Red Hat 5.1 -> Mandrake (till bout 8) -> Slackware -> Gentoo. And speaking of things that just work together, you could say the same for Slackware with Dropline Gnome, very nicely done. Anyway, thanks for the informed response and not the "shutup fanboy" or "asshat" respnse as above! :)
