  1. from their faq... on Enlightenment Lives · · Score: 1
    • Do people still use DR16?
Yes! Hundreds of people use DR16 daily, possibly thousands. As more and more users move to Linux and other UNIX platforms they are becoming aware of Enlightenment and making it their window manager of choice. As KDE and GNOME pick up more and more steam it becomes harder to find a powerful, yet elegant window manager for the power user who wants simplicity, flexibility and functionality. Enlightenment is often emulated, but never duplicated. Many of the users who have left E for Fluxbox or Sawfish have eventually come back to the frey."

100s? Even they should give themselves more credit. I'll try this release, but think I'll be stuck with Openbox at least till I can try e17, but I appreciate that they're still rolling; choice is good.

I've always though having a winders key on every keyboard was a bit strange, it should be some universal icon; but I supposed the win icon has become that. regardless, if I bought a keyboard (instead of just liberating them from work) I would like to have a tux on it, since I only run linux and mac at home.

as for the 'hotbuttons' I fail to see that being very useful to linux users; most home users love them within their win world, but linux users are (generally) beyond that. still, if hotbuttons on keyboards that work under linux help folks like my mom use linux to check her mail, then I'd be happy!

This is an admirable effort, however why Fedora for a beginner's distro? The problem I see is that Fedora is just getting it's feet wet and entire reinstalls are needed to update from core 1 -> 2. This harks back to my days with Red Hat 5 and Mdk 6. Without trying to start a flamewar, I really think a Debian based system with Synaptic setup for updating is the best solution. Lastly, I don't know if a beginner's guide should include the commandline, that will likely scare some off. Let them get completely comfy in the GUI, then let them start exploring off the path.

Still, efforts like this NEED to be undertaken, if it's one thing OSS projects often lack is documentation.

First IBM embraces Linux, then they position it as the next logical step from AIX, now they're standing up to, and trying to put an end to, SCO's harrassment. Additionally, IBM is doing a LOT of marketing of Linux. Plenty of traditional magazine and television ads are all over, and they clearly spell out the message that not only is Linux good for your business but IBM is the company that can successfully get you up and running. When companies like IBM put out that kind of marketing message it builds mindshare for the entire Linux community.

Let's not forget that Sun is beginning to do this. There are now full-page magazine ads appearing that feature StarOffice. However, these are of lesser interest to the Linux community in that the ads primarily benefit Sun without the broader appeal of the IBM ads. Still, adoption of StarOffice and OpenOffice will eventually make it easier to switch to Linux.

Another question is, "what do you think professional marketing' will bring to the table that Linux doesn't already have?" For instance, who in the United States does *not* already equate RedHat with Linux? You're unlikely to increase vendor/product identification in this case through traditional marketing (and RedHat is quite happy to pay for their own marketing). What you *might* do is increase market acceptance of Linux as a product. But IBM is already doing that. If your competitors' ads are working for you, why spend the dollars?

All in all it adds up to one of the old/stuff tech GIANTS backing the fledgling OS that could, Linux. Thanks IBM, let me start repricing those t41 thinkpads now...
