hey I was pulling numbers out of thin air. I was born in '81 and I know plenty of gamers born only a few years after me whose first games were windows games.
Sorry if I stepped on some toes - I thought it was obvious I was using the 1984 date very loosely.
Dosbox is fantastic for those times when you want to relive the moments when you first got into pc games (at least for anyone born before say 1984 or thereabouts).
Many of the games we now regard as classics, were written for DOS. Many of those games even pioneered whole genres of computer gaming.
Such games that come to mind include Wolf3D, Doom, Command & Conquer, Warcraft, Need For Speed, Microprose F1GP and the list goes on.
They may not have been the first in their genre, but they were certainly the games that defined the genre. Current game developers would do well to look to the DOS classics for inspiration, not so much for ideas, but for how to create a true classic.
Dosbox works incredibly well right now and I wish its developers every success in its continued development.
well here's a novel idea. How about REMOVING the "feature"?
Its simple.
Step 1: Remove the "feature". Step 2: If anyone complains about it being removed, explain to them the security risk it poses.
Users (no matter how stupid) should not be able to break the OS. Admins yes, users no. They can wipe their own data sure, but not bring down an OS. Thats the OS's fault.
It doesn't matter that much if the software eats up RAM because you can get 4 gigs of it for $50, and that's without any discount or sales or rebates. A two gig stick costs $20.
$20 can be a lot if you're talking hundreds if not thousands of PCs.
FYI here in Australia, 2GB of RAM recently cost me about $150. Why? For a start its DDR400 which is getting older now, but then most PCs that need more RAM are going to be the older ones, not the new ones that are built for today's OS's.
Even if RAM is cheap, why should someone switch to windows 7 (which may require more RAM) when their current OS works fine as is?
Excuse my ignorance and my tiny brain, but surely something is not adding up with the fact that they are allowing for a change in C-14 levels in these calculations, but assume C-14 is constant when dating other, much older things?
Surely this would mean that we can only use C-14 dating back as far as atmospheric C-14 levels have been getting recorded?
I'm sure I'm off track but if someone could help with a simple explanation that'd be great.
And all this time I was almost certain that it was based on sound scientific research proving that 160 characters was the maximum amount of text a cell phone us
if they've managed to get root access in the first place, you're already screwed.
Put it another way, if a hacker already has root access, and yet feels that they need to use a bug in an intel motherboard to install a botnet, then they're officially an idiot.
Why not just install the botnet code straight into the init scripts?
In other news, if you own a XYZ car and someone steals it, they can change the locks so that they can steal it again later. Actually they can do this to any stolen car, but on XYZ cars its easy to change locks once inside. ?! Therefore do not buy or drive a XYZ car because if it gets stolen, it might get...stolen...again.
But the summary specifically mentions that a lot of this code targetted users' personal info - which in your example would still be accessible.
This is exactly what I want to protect myself against. If the OS gets crippled or broken, I can fix that, but if they delete or worse, steal, my data, thats dangerous. Backups will protect against data being deleted but how do you prevent your personal data from being stolen?
And no, putting all my data in a location where even I cant access it is not a solution.
Most decent firewalls now will filter which applications are allowed to access the internet and warn you when any application not in its list tries to. Its not the perfect solution but definitely more secure than turning a blind eye.

iMac sitting on coffee table?
damn.
so how long do we need to wait now?
oh wait...
According to the summary, grad students are climbing stairs all by themselves for thesis projects.
Apparently almost no one was climbing stairs 5-10 years ago...
Or if you read it another way, maybe grad students ARE robots...
go on - back to the top and read the summary again - you know you want to. >:D

Really? I thought it was a Range in Excel.

Windows 7 is really vista with slow parts taken out
So the marketing wizards want us to believe.
Time will tell.

... everyone covered their ears!
nope. mum screamed. THEN everyone covered their ears!
But they'll have more goats next year and they didn't have to pay for those.
I'm sorry, all I got was...

...and then i lost interest.
A comparison between lcd and crt has nothing to do with needing new glasses since he's looking at both through the same eyes.
New glasses would only show up how much sharper the LCD looks and how much blurrier and fuzzy the crt looks.
when your line of code dies?
more to the point, what happens when you stop paying the $4 a month?
do they remove your line of code?
Programmer1: How come it doesn't compile?
Programmer2: Because nigel_rocks89213 didn't pay his $4 this month.
"...today's technology will become yesterday's technology in a very short period of time."
Yeah, in only one day.
less actually, since "yesterday" does not necessarily mean "24 hours ago". :P
I feel that if Ubuntu made it easier to change to well made themes...
How is System>>Preferences>>Appearance anything but easy?
(Whether what they have in there is well-made or not is a matter of opinion.)
Maybe he means, Start->Control Panel->Display->Personalise->Change Colours and Themes->something (you get the idea).
see, much easier... then they should have heaps of themes to choose from by default...just like windows.

Windows is it generally handed to you as long as you are sat in front of the machine.
What, the cracker can't reboot into single-user mode?
um, no, unless they're in my house - which then means they could do a lot worse than hack my computer...

This is exactly what i was thinking.
How can they record anything through the earpiece on the telephone? The microphone is on the other end!
and when you're finished doing that, ANSWER THE PHONE for goodness sake!!!
how about "HTML doers" ?
