I think that this is the "international" repair method. Or rather, universal.
Kick the darn thing until it works or your wife makes you buy a new one.
Actually this worked quiet well back when there were a lot of socketed chips. You just had to know where on the box to apply the healing touch. But nowadays everything is soldered in - no joy.
Am I the only one here who thinks the not-so-clever-anymore substitution of "S" for "$" is the kind of thing one would expect from a know-it-all teenager, and not someone with relatively strong associations with the rebuilding of a nation's IT infrastructure?

The utility infrastructure is the sole responsibility of the Iraqi's. They want us out of their country so damn bad, so be it, let them fall back into the backward third world like the others who despise us. As for me, I do wash whenever I want, and leave my TV on when I am away. Last night I ordered pizza and threw half away.
If you're in the US, the energy you're happily wasting most likely comes from backward third world places like Saudi, Venezuela or Canada. World oil production is in decline so you will soon need to dip into Iraq's 35% of world oil reserves to maintain your profligate lifestyle.
The ironic thing is, Google already has a system, http://froogle.google.com, which searches only through online stores. Since they've already got an ability to recognize stores, they should really add a checkbox to disable "store" hits from normal searches.
Maybe this will happen when "Froogle BETA" becomes "Froogle".
These rampant fires may be wreaking havoc upon insurance companies, but just remember, it is all part of nature. This catastrophe serves to remind us humans we are part of nature, not above it.
Despite how horrific they appear to be, they serve some beneficial role in the grand scheme of things.
In nature forests burn every few decades. Governments devote a lot of resources to stamping out fires. The effect of these efforts is to increase the number of trees that haven't burned - yet. This guarantees that when an unusually dry year comes along there will be a big uncontrollable fire that will be more dangerous to people and more environmentally destructive than what would occur naturally.
Of course it doesn't help that people love to have that little cedar chalet nestled among the pine trees.
If you have a band, and you sell your own music, the music industry takes a $0.77 cut from every CD-R you burn and sell. The music industry gets paid for ALL content up here, not just their own.
While your poor little band is paying sales tax and income tax on every CDR you sell.

"Actually, there was a lot of sceptisism from the scientists about that little experiment in the book. It turned out that the reason Saxifrage Russell pushed that project so hard was that he had (unethically, without consent) hidden GM lichen inside the heaters, remember?"
Thanks, I will reread that when I run across my copy.
What bugged was the part where they were setting up windmill powered electric heaters to warm up Mars. This is a double scientific blooper: 1) Wind energy gets degraded into heat naturally without the help of windmills. 2)Even if you used an external heat source such as nuclear energy the warmth would not accumulate, basically for the same reason that your stove does not get hotter every time you cook. The temperature of a planet is determined by an equilibrium between solar heating (plus other relatively small sources) and radiation into space.

Ringing the doorbell is one thing. Opening the door and walking around is another. For that matter, would you just assume that you could walk into whatever building you wanted because there isn't a sign that says, "Dude, I don't know you. Go Away." Well, you might. I don't know.
The lack of a sign that says "No Trespassing" won't keep you from getting shot when you trespass.
Where I live (not in the "Land of the Free") you would normally walk into any unrestricted public (government) or private building without worrying about getting shot.
Pray to Jesus, that's what I allus does. Dem bad ol' tornados allus blows away my boozin' crack smokin' neighbors trailers but I'm OK 'cause Jesus loves me.
Soon Iraq will be declared to be "democratic", just like Afghanistan (according to the US State Dept. Human Rights report). Kuwait is described as a "constitutional monarchy", can Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states and even Iran (already a democracy) be far behind?
Obviously it makes sense for the US to support the oil-rich "good guys" in the "new Mideast".
The "bad guys" will then become the Israelis with their illegal nukes and their occupied territories in violation of UN resolutions.
Unlikely? Remember how quickly Osama and the Chechen rebels went from being "freedom fighters" to "terrorists" (CNN was quite confused for a while there). The Jewish lobby is rich and powerful but Bush has noticed that there are lots of Iraqis and other Arabs in Dearborn etc. who also have votes.
I think we may wake up one day to hear that all those Jews who go to fight for Israel are now classified as terrorists or "enemy combatatants".
Nowadays they convince all the idiots to join the military and conquer other countries which have valuable natural resources. When they rule the whole world they will have to find something else to do with the idiots.
First, UPenn's grant (not OpenBSD's) was not cut because of Theo's anti-war comments. That was pure speculation on his part, subsequently denied by a DARPA spokesperson.
Here's their latest non-explanation: "As a result of the DARPA review of the project, and due to world events and the evolving threat posed by increasingly capable nation-states, the Government on April 21 advised the University to suspend work on the 'security fest' portion of the project.," Walker wrote in an e-mail this week.
The security fest, what de Raadt calls a "hackathon," was scheduled to bring about 60 OpenBSD programmers to Calgary, Canada , in May. Asked how the evolving threat of nation-states would affect travel to the Calgary , Walker declined to comment further.
"I just don't think we're going to be able to go into any more detail," Walker said.
I guess they're worried about nation states with the capability to resist buffer overflow attacks.
Second, there's nothing particularly strange about a Republican investing in a Chinese company. China has "opened" up. It's no longer an isolationist pure-totalitarian state. It's moving towards a real market economy in a rapid fashion. It actually makes some sort of sense for Rumsfeld to do this if you substitute "war hawk" with "capitalist".
If only Saddam had played nice with US investors - we could have overlooked his little human-rights and WMD transgressions like we do for China.
I just thought it bizarre that a right-wing war hawk like Rumsey would be investing in a free software project in partnership with the commie bosses of People's China. Particularly in view of the recent political decision to chop OpenBSD's grant because of Theo's anti-war comments.
Sort of like an anti-porn politician who made his money from strip joints.
Sorry, it's not as easy to find as I thought.

How do they translate "genericness" and "genericity" ?
A more fair example would have been "Fonster" and "Lonster"
Or "Lindows" and "Lindor".
Mmmmmmmmmmm..... chocolate.
0.3% of 6378km is ~20km. But I think that what's really alarming is that the trend has suddenly reversed and has shown such a big change since 1997.
No, 0.3% or ~20 km. is the permanent bulge due to the Earth's rotation. The changes they are talking about are much smaller, probably millimeters.

So what is YOUR point, exactly?
The US imports software from Germany, Japan, Israel, Canada and many other countries and of course profitably exports software to many more.
How are you going to write a law banning imports from poor countries?
I was thinking of software, like:
;sleep(1);} '
perl -e 'while(true){printf "%b\r", `date -u +%s`
A fancy odometer-style display would be nice but I can live without it.
I Need a Binary Clock so I can watch it turn over on Jan. 10.
Any suggestions?
