    I think that this is the "international" repair method. Or rather, universal.

    Kick the darn thing until it works or your wife makes you buy a new one.

    Actually this worked quiet well back when there were a lot of socketed chips. You just had to know where on the box to apply the healing touch. But nowadays everything is soldered in - no joy.

    0.3% of 6378km is ~20km. But I think that what's really alarming is that the trend has suddenly reversed and has shown such a big change since 1997.

    No, 0.3% or ~20 km. is the permanent bulge due to the Earth's rotation. The changes they are talking about are much smaller, probably millimeters.

    Am I the only one here who thinks the not-so-clever-anymore substitution of "S" for "$" is the kind of thing one would expect from a know-it-all teenager, and not someone with relatively strong associations with the rebuilding of a nation's IT infrastructure?

    The utility infrastructure is the sole responsibility of the Iraqi's. They want us out of their country so damn bad, so be it, let them fall back into the backward third world like the others who despise us. As for me, I do wash whenever I want, and leave my TV on when I am away. Last night I ordered pizza and threw half away.

    If you're in the US, the energy you're happily wasting most likely comes from backward third world places like Saudi, Venezuela or Canada. World oil production is in decline so you will soon need to dip into Iraq's 35% of world oil reserves to maintain your profligate lifestyle.


    So what is YOUR point, exactly?

    The ironic thing is, Google already has a system, http://froogle.google.com, which searches only through online stores. Since they've already got an ability to recognize stores, they should really add a checkbox to disable "store" hits from normal searches.

    Maybe this will happen when "Froogle BETA" becomes "Froogle".

    These rampant fires may be wreaking havoc upon insurance companies, but just remember, it is all part of nature. This catastrophe serves to remind us humans we are part of nature, not above it.

    Despite how horrific they appear to be, they serve some beneficial role in the grand scheme of things.

    In nature forests burn every few decades.
    Governments devote a lot of resources to stamping out fires.
    The effect of these efforts is to increase the number of trees that haven't burned - yet.
    This guarantees that when an unusually dry year comes along there will be a big uncontrollable fire that will be more dangerous to people and more environmentally destructive than what would occur naturally.

    Of course it doesn't help that people love to have that little cedar chalet nestled among the pine trees.

    If you have a band, and you sell your own music, the music industry takes a $0.77 cut from every CD-R you burn and sell. The music industry gets paid for ALL content up here, not just their own.

    While your poor little band is paying sales tax and income tax on every CDR you sell.

    What bugged was the part where they were setting up windmill powered electric heaters to warm up Mars.
    This is a double scientific blooper:
    1) Wind energy gets degraded into heat naturally without the help of windmills.
    2)Even if you used an external heat source such as nuclear energy the warmth would not accumulate, basically for the same reason that your stove does not get hotter every time you cook. The temperature of a planet is determined by an equilibrium between solar heating (plus other relatively small sources) and radiation into space.

    We had an SCO guy speaking at our UUG back in Sept. 2001.
    He was making allegations about pirated code in Linux.
    No specifics of course.

    Ringing the doorbell is one thing. Opening the door and walking around is another. For that matter, would you just assume that you could walk into whatever building you wanted because there isn't a sign that says, "Dude, I don't know you. Go Away." Well, you might. I don't know.

    The lack of a sign that says "No Trespassing" won't keep you from getting shot when you trespass.

    Where I live (not in the "Land of the Free") you would normally walk into any
    unrestricted public (government) or private building without
    worrying about getting shot.

    Soon Iraq will be declared to be "democratic",
    just like Afghanistan (according to the US State Dept.
    Human Rights report).
    Kuwait is described as a "constitutional monarchy", can
    Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states and even Iran
    (already a democracy) be far behind?

    Obviously it makes sense for the US to support
    the oil-rich "good guys" in the "new Mideast".

    The "bad guys" will then become the Israelis
    with their illegal nukes and their occupied
    territories in violation of UN resolutions.

    Unlikely? Remember how quickly Osama and the
    Chechen rebels went from being "freedom fighters"
    to "terrorists" (CNN was quite confused for a while there).
    The Jewish lobby is rich and powerful but Bush
    has noticed that there are lots of Iraqis and
    other Arabs in Dearborn etc. who also have votes.

    I think we may wake up one day to hear that all
    those Jews who go to fight for Israel are now
    classified as terrorists or "enemy combatatants".

    First, UPenn's grant (not OpenBSD's) was not cut because of Theo's anti-war comments. That was pure speculation on his part, subsequently denied by a DARPA spokesperson.

    Here's their latest non-explanation:

    "As a result of the DARPA review of the project, and due to world events and the evolving threat posed by increasingly capable nation-states, the Government on April 21 advised the University to suspend work on the 'security fest' portion of the project.," Walker wrote in an e-mail this week.

    The security fest, what de Raadt calls a "hackathon," was scheduled to bring about 60 OpenBSD programmers to Calgary, Canada , in May. Asked how the evolving threat of nation-states would affect travel to the Calgary , Walker declined to comment further.

    "I just don't think we're going to be able to go into any more detail," Walker said.

    I guess they're worried about nation states with the
    capability to resist buffer overflow attacks.

    Second, there's nothing particularly strange about a Republican investing in a Chinese company. China has "opened" up. It's no longer an isolationist pure-totalitarian state. It's moving towards a real market economy in a rapid fashion. It actually makes some sort of sense for Rumsfeld to do this if you substitute "war hawk" with "capitalist".

    If only Saddam had played nice with US investors -
    we could have overlooked his little human-rights and
    WMD transgressions like we do for China.

    I just thought it bizarre that a right-wing
    war hawk like Rumsey would be investing in
    a free software project in partnership with
    the commie bosses of People's China.
    Particularly in view of the recent political
    decision to chop OpenBSD's grant because of
    Theo's anti-war comments.

    Sort of like an anti-porn politician who made
    his money from strip joints.
