"However, some experts question whether a universal vaccine of this kind is even possible, since the human body has been unable to come up with an antibody solution. "
Using this logic we shouldn't have come up with vaccines for smallpox, polio or rabies either.
Traditionally semiconductor advances are quick to come to market. I don't see anything in the article that suggests this is anything more complicated than the tweeks that CPU manufacturers routinely make to their processes.
To be fair to Microsoft it does seem that they have toned down a lot of the anti-competative practices of the 90s. To all you folks there who are younger, it was really really bad to the point of being criminal.
Yeah, the homeschool kids are socially retarded but the school kids are mentally retarded.
My cousins (fraternal twins) were home schooled and were # 1 and # 2 in their HS graduating class. One went to Brown and the other to Cornell. I wouldn't be surprised if they were 'out of it' the first year or two in high school but who cares?
I have to agree- I have seen this plenty of times where developers want to play Hero and throw code at a problem instead of seeing if a small data or business process change could be implemented instead.
Capsules don't rely on tiles but instead use single-ablative shields that are protected during the entire flight until reentry. After each launch the shuttle has to be completely rebuilt so there weren't any cost savings. A little more about problems with the shuttle design by a Nobel-Prize winning physicist....
This is how they make their money- with 30$ gold plated serial cables. People will agonize over a purchase of several hundred dollars and glibly 10x overpay for some necessary add-on.
Teachers should have a packet sniffer app running on their own machines that shows the destination and type of Net traffic occurring in their classroom in realtime.
I would prefer the teachers were teaching. The idea that computers are necessary for education is crazy.
The type of loader has nothing to do with it. It's the focusing mechanism that can allow the lens to hit the DVD. The lens gets very very close to the disk and designing it to never be able to touch the disk is difficult. There is also play in the spindle mechanism which turns the disk, and the problem is the same regardless of the 'loader'.
The problem is that your monitor is still in two dimensions- so what benefit do you get with a 3d interface that you constantly need to translate back in to 2 dimensions?
You have it wrong. The force of gravity will reduce to zero as you go to the point of geosynchronous orbit. If you go past that point you will start feeling a centripital force towards the counterweight.

In short, 'good ideas are harder to come by than hardware'
Seems that if you had to live in Russia, staying in your parent's basement is a good idea
Although not targeted to research and more towards learning, I though it would be good to give props to the people at http://www.andestutor.org/
Especially since my brother is one of the main contributors on the project ;)

Wow! You should see about getting funding for this.

Negative growth is right around the corner....

More venomous mammal info for nerds-
Another mammal with venom is the Platypus, it has spines in it's armpits that when injected causes unbelievably severe pain.
It's even worse than that. They are borrowing against you and your children's future production.
In a few years he will realize that pay is inversely related to the creativity or interest of a job.

Gambling games are more 'addictive' if the player loses than if they win every time, even if they are winning money.

The Romans also had the same debasement of the currency that pretty much tracked their decline.

Yes, and how is a parent supposed to regulate what their children do with a laptop given to them by the school?
Yes, I think the quote in the article is someone playing a silly game of semantics.

Same here. I took the kids there and had to stare at the floor during the 'rides'. Instant motion sickness.
XP Home is pretty horrible compared to XP Pro.
