    traffic on 101 is bad during rush hour. It is pretty run of the mill rush hour traffic though. Nothing like the near 12-hr long gridlock that the LA area has.

    You have to file/pay taxes to the IRS even if you live in another country and receive zero money from the US. However, there are a bunch of deductions, so unless you are making a ton of money you will likely not have to pay anything, but you still have to file.

    H2 visas exists for manual labor. I cannot vouch for the usefulness of them, they seem to me to be kind of burdensome to get on a seasonal basis.

    I wasn't questioning the usefulness of the items, but rather the loss of the items on death. If you just need to grind to replace your items what is the point of having loss on death in the first place? It just becomes another annoying timesink.

    Huh? You can buy 300W halogen J-type bulbs for Torchiere style lamps. I have one in my living room, don't remember if I put a 300W in there last time I changed the bulb.

    The ATSC tuner will use the RF input. When you do a channel scan there should be a "Digital Channels found" entry if it has an ATSC tuner. If it was a model sold in the past couple of years it should have one.

    One thing you might want to check, is the antenna actually hooked up? the output in your apartment could be from an old antenna that blew away years ago and the landlord never bothered to replace because everyone just gets cable anyway. I have lived in a couple of apartments like this.

    If you are relatively close (20-30 or so miles) to the broadcast towers with a clear LoS you should be able to get a good signal with an indoor antenna.

    Might help if you actually told us WHICH LCD TV you have. If it has an ATSC tuner you are fine, if it doesn't you need a box.

    There is a Glacier National Park in the US too, in Montanna, of course global warming is doing its best to ruin that one. You can find a lot of that in Alaska also.

    I am a US citizen. China is pretty easy to get into. Just fill out a form and give them your passport and $120 (thanks to the US jacking up their fees, China reciprocated). you get it back with a visa. The entry guards are very pleasant (as opposed to the US, must be a job requirement to be a dick), ask you the usual questions; how long are you staying, where are you going, what is the purpose of your visit, etc. Stamp and you are on your way.

    I haven't been able to find any proof of a plug-in Prius being sold by Toyota, care to elaborate?

    I did find reference to a missing button on the North American model which forces an EV only mode, but that is not plug-in.

    How is this any less screwed than the people who don't keep the tanks on their gas cars full? I usually only fill up once I get near empty in my car, most of the people I know are the same.

    If it is really that big of an issue you can keep a 5 gallon gas can in your garage for emergencies. Problem solved for everyone except the pure electric, which could be solved by buying a generator along with that gas can.

    I am kind of surprised your parents have such poor reception at that distance. I did a spot check of a few station in Seattle (ABC, NBC, CBS), if Wikipedia is to be trusted they seem to be transmitting their digital signals at full power.

    I am using an indoor antenna to boot (Terk TV4, need the VHF, NBC is on channel 12). 3rd floor apartment helps too. Most of the transmitters in SF area are on Sutro Tower, I live in the south bay near San Jose. We don't get as much rain as you of course.

    You really need to make sure you have at least 5th generation tuner.same I have the original MyHD card and a Tivo S3. The difference is night and day, same antenna, location.
